Registration – 185 XUKChassis No. – DB4-1122RM.O.T. – April 2025Odometer – 81,000‘185 XUK’ is truly an astounding car. One of just 136 Aston Martin DB4 coupes made with the uprated Vantage specification and the subject of a no-expense-spared restoration. ‘185 XUK’s’ chassis number of 1122 reveals it to be a MK V model and the 121st of that series to roll out of Newport Pagnell. This matching numbers car is a UK specified and supplied example being delivered new to its first Perthshire based owner by dealers Aberfoyle Motors in November 1962. The DB4 was specified with overdrive, a 3.77 ratio rear axle, Bray Block heater, heated rear screen and chrome wire wheels. The first lucky owner retained ‘185 XUK’ for a full 23 years until 1985 when it was sold at a warranted mileage of 35,000. At that point the Aston Martin travelled south and was enjoyed by four owners in the London area over the next 26-years. In the mid-1990’s ‘185 XUK’ underwent its first comprehensive restoration at around 47,000 miles. The work extended to the mechanicals, an engine rebuild as well as the paint and bodywork. Despite being acquired in a sound and useable condition a previous owner initiated a show standard restoration in 2017. At this stage the body was stripped back to the metal and all components were removed and replaced or restored. The triple carburettor Vantage engine was sent to world renowned specialists RS Williams for a £40,000 full engine rebuild. The bodywork was completely restored and the paintwork painstakingly reapplied. A number of thoughtful and subtle upgrades were also made at this stage – more of which shortly. The restoration was complete in 2018 at a total cost of around £190,000. The odometer reading roughly 80,000 miles at this stage and was zeroed on completion of the restoration. Today the odometer reads a little over 1,000 miles. ‘185 XUK’ is being sold with the most comprehensive paperwork files imaginable. This includes diligently kept notebooks from the first owner, logging the mileage covered and all work undertaken between 1962 and 1985. Work from both subsequent restorations has also been painstakingly documented and recorded. Despite its MOT exemption as an Historic Vehicle, ‘185 XUK’ is complete with an advisory free test valid until April 2025.The Aston Martin DB4 was a watershed car for the historic British marque. Much more than a mere revision of its predecessor, it boasted a svelte lightweight, superleggera body designed by Carrozzeria Touring in Milan. Out went the Lagonda 2.9-litre engine of the DB2/4 MK III in favour of a new 3.7-litre Tadek Marek straight six unit. Upon its introduction in 1958, the DB4 became the first model to be built at the famous Newport Pagnell factory. This example’s latest restoration is a triumph and as thorough as its six figure cost would suggest. The attention to detail exhibited is truly outstanding. The underside presents probably better than a brand new DB4 did. The braking system, suspension, rear axle and floor pans all look like new. The whole underside appearance is remarkable. The engine bay is pristine, and its original factory Vantage engine looks as good as it performs. The interior is every bit the equal of the rest of the car and has been completely re-trimmed and re-upholstered in sublime red leather.During the restoration a raft of expertly chosen upgrades were made to further enhance the usability and utility of ‘185 XUK’ for the modern world. These include a high power ignition system, high power alternator, a custom aluminium radiator, aluminium fuel tank, Kenlowe fan, uprated HBE handling kit, stainless steel exhaust system, fully upgraded sound deadening, modern central locking system, RSW hose set and stainless steel oil cooler and pipework. Such is the calibre of ‘185 XUK’ that it was featured in a Prestige and Performance Car multipage feature in 2023. The tester concluded the feature by reporting that “the last time I enjoyed this kind of visceral excitement was when I drove a majestic Lamborghini 350 GT 20 years ago.” This, then, is clearly an Aston Martin DB4 Vantage with vanishingly few equals.

• Comprehensive service history from new• 6.0 litre, four seat supercarThe Rapide is a four-door, four-seater, high-performance sports saloon, which Aston Martin introduced in early 2010. It was first presented as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in 2006 and the production version was shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The Rapide name is a reference to the Lagonda Rapide, a four-door, four-seater saloon produced by Lagonda, now a part of Aston Martin. The new Rapide is the company's first four-door fastback saloon since the Lagonda which was discontinued in 1990. It is based on the DB9 and underpinned by the Aston Martin VH platform. The first cars rolled off the production line in May 2010, initially built at a dedicated plant at the Magna Steyr facility in Graz, Austria. This lovely 2011 Rapide is presented in Q Black Storm (with a Cherry flake) over a contrasting Chancellor hide leather interior. Supplied by Aston Martin Park Lane, this example was shipped to Singapore and maintained by Wearnes Automotive who are a multi franchise service centre for Bugatti, Bentley and Aston Martin. Showing approximately 16 service stamps and inspection stamps in the service book which were all by main dealers until an independent service, at purchase, by Praters Automotive in 2023 before returning to a main dealer, Aston Martin Weybridge in July 2023. Offered with a full handbook pack, itemised service sheets from Wearnes Automotive Singapore, build sheet from Aston Martin, two keys and a recent set of new Yokohama tyres all round. A sensational saloon, the 6.0 litre V12 engine never fails to excite, and this is no exception combine with a well-kept cabin that oozes luxury. With comprehensive maintenance records and in stunning condition, this is a wonderful yet practical supercar that turns heads in any environment. Rare Continental TourerComes with original buff logbookBare metal respray 2022Lagonda's early success had been founded on the production of light cars, but the company changed direction in the mid-1920s with the introduction of the 14/60. The latter abandoned the firm's traditional in-unit gearbox in favour of a midships-mounted transmission, but of greater technical interest was the engine. Designed by Arthur Davidson, the 2.0-litre 'four' featured twin camshafts that were mounted high in the block, operating inclined valves in hemispherical combustion chambers. Power output of this advanced design was a highly respectable 60bhp. For the 1929 season, a 'low chassis' Speed Model was introduced, featuring revisions to the frame's front end and a higher-compression engine fitted with twin carburettors. The Speed Model had resulted from the factory's Le Mans effort of 1928, when the 2-Litre driven by André D'Erlanger and Douglas Hawkes had finished 11th overall in the 24-Hour endurance race. A classic example of racing improving the breed, the 'low chassis' 2-Litre possessed markedly superior handling characteristics courtesy of its lower centre of gravity. The final Speed Model variant was the Continental, which featured a slanting, slatted radiator and bigger brakes. Another distinguishing feature was its 18" diameter wheels, which had the effect of lowering the overall gearing for improved acceleration. This car's ID plate on the bulkhead is marked 'CB', denoting a Continental model, and 'T4' referring to the body type. The T4 body was made of steel and had cycle wings as standard; there were two small doors on the nearside and one on the offside, with the driver having to climb in via a triangular recess. Photographs taken in the 1930s show that 'GY 9963' had Speed Model wings, and therefore it seems reasonable to assume they were fitted by the factory to special order. During restoration they were replaced with cycle wings and running boards correct for the Continental (the original Speed Model wings are supplied with the car)This fabulous Lagonda was ordered new by Gaffikin Williams & Co of Hanover Square in London, this Continental was first owned by one Geoffrey Bowman of Stanmore followed by a handful of others before passing in November 1963 to Mr D Parker, who would keep it for the next 55 years. Sold from his estate in 2018 and then to the present owner more recently. The car has been treated to a bare metal repaint (in 2022); a recent magneto rebuild and new ignition leads; and rewiring and updating of the electrics. We are advised that the engine is running well, that the chassis has been Waxoyled and is solid and that the interior in red leather, previously reupholstered by Lagonda, is nicely patinated. In all other respects, the car is described as in working order. This ultra-rare Post-Vintage Thoroughbred is offered with restoration invoices, three buff logbooks and a V5C registration certificate. Lot 93

Registration No: PJ 2716 Chassis No: OH10067 MOT: ExemptBegan life as a Supercharged model complete with factory T3 Tourer coachworkRemodelled in period with an altogether more attractive 'bustle' rear and bespoke hoodMuch improved during the current ownership via a thorough engine overhaul and suspension work etcPreviously featured on the front cover of The Automobile magazine and in 'Lagonda Heritage' by Richard BirdOwned by Lagonda Club stalwart W.J.B. Anderson from 1975 - 2007 and extensively restored in that time A development of the Lagonda 2-litre that was driven by Andre D'Erlanger and Douglas Hawkes to 11th place overall at the 1928 Le Mans 24-hour race, the 'Low Chassis' model was introduced the following year. Benefiting from a redesigned front axle (complete with rerouted braking system) and rear suspension spacers etc, its reduced centre of gravity resulted in notably sharper handling. Powered by a 1954cc 'twin-cam' four-cylinder engine that boasted hemispherical combustion chambers and inclined overhead valves, the 'Low Chassis' was reckoned to be good for 80mph (though this was somewhat coachwork dependant). Concerned that rivals such as Alvis and Sunbeam were beginning to offer cars of similar performance, the Staines-based company unveiled a supercharged derivative at the Brooklands Fete on 19th July 1930. While, the attendant demonstrator wore a Powerplus single-rotor assembly, the majority of 'blown' production cars were specified with either Cozette No.9 (4psi) or altogether rarer Zoller (5-7psi) units. Thus equipped, a 'Low Chassis' 2-litre was reputedly capable of 90mph. Underlining their performance advantage, the Lord de Clifford piloted one to 4th place overall on the 1931 Monte Carlo Rally, while St Albans motorcar dealer W.M. Couper used another one to capture a Glacier Cup on the next year's Alpine Rally. First registered in Surrey on January 14th 1932 (or so its ‘PJ 2716’ number plate would imply), chassis OH10067 began life as a supercharged 2 Litre ‘Low Chassis’ Speed Model complete with factory T3 Tourer coachwork. Surviving World War Two, the Lagonda had had its rear end elegantly reshaped and a bespoke hood frame made by the time that Dr Roger Kirkpatrick took possession in 1951. Custodian for the next six years, the anaesthetist is understood to have commissioned the neat luggage rack which remains in situ from the Bristol Hospital Workshop. Passing through the hands of Bruce Balcombe, Adair Robson, Ron Autiss, Adair Robson (again) and Roland Morgan thereafter, ‘PJ 2716’ came with two engines but had fallen into disrepair when Lagonda Club stalwart W.J.B. Anderson acquired it during 1975. Undeterred, he treated the 2 Litre ‘Low Chassis’ to a ground up restoration over the next few years (various photos relating to which remain on file). Contributing various articles to the Lagonda Club, Mr Anderson kept the Tourer for over three decades before selling it to Channel Islands resident John Refault in 2007. The latter had the bonnet and wings bare metal painted, the fabric body cleaned and the interior smartened (redyed leather, fresh carpets, revarnished dashboard etc) as well as fitting a new front valance, stainless steel exhaust and running boards. Returning to the UK mainland in September 2014, the four-seater entered the current ownership the following May for the princely sum of £83,000. Substantially improved over the past decade, more than the guide price has been spent on a thorough engine overhaul (including the purchase of a new downdraught cylinder head) plus attention to the rear axle (new half shafts), radiator, clutch, water pump, suspension and carburettors etc. The engine’s timing case is stamped with the number ‘2B 1068’ which is indicative of a supercharged unit. The vendor bought a period blower but did not reinstate it on the basis that the downdraught cylinder head gave improved performance but without the complexity of force-fed induction. Still highly presentable and, to our eyes, far more attractive than a standard T3 Tourer, ‘PJ 2716’ started readily during our recent photography session. Featured on the front cover of The Automobile magazine and in the book ‘Lagonda Heritage’ by Richard Bird whilst in Mr Anderson’s care, this undeniably handsome Post-Vintage Thoroughbred is worthy of close inspection. Offered for sale with V5C Registration Document, numerous bills, period photos and history file. For more information, please contact: Damian Jones damian.jones@handh.co.uk 07855 493737

Lot 2

A 1937 Railton Fairmile series III Drophead Coupe, reg. no. MG 5335. Completely restored by The Vintage Carriage Company, over many years, to a very high standard. Winner of the John Cobb Cup at the Railton Owners Club National meeting, at Hever Castle, in June 2002. After selling Invicta to Earl Fitzwilliam in 1933, Noel Macklin and his works manager, Leon Cushman, began searching for a new automotive venture. Inspired by the speed records being set by Hudson’s Essex-Terraplane subsidiary, Macklin secured a supply of rolling chassis from the parent company. He enlisted Reid Railton, a well-known designer of Land Speed Record cars, and commissioned coachbuilders such as Ranalah, REAL, Carbodies, and Coachcraft to design bodies for his Anglo-American hybrid. The first series of Railtons, equipped with a 4010cc Terraplane 8 engine, a three-speed manual gearbox, and improved damping, offered a superior power-to-weight ratio compared to Derby Bentleys or Lagonda M45s. The car’s striking design, including a radiator by motoring artist F. Gordon Crosby and an Invicta-style riveted bonnet, quickly made the Railton brand known for its acceleration and flexibility in top gear. In 1934, Macklin adopted the Hudson Eight rolling chassis for the second series of Railtons, featuring a two-inch longer wheelbase and a more powerful 4168cc engine. Coachcraft produced around 178 Railton Eights as Fairmile Drophead Coupes, distinguished by their swooping tails, full-flowing wings, and quad-hinged ‘suicide doors,’ of which only thirty-five are believed to survive today. We hold a huge amount of past history documents, including invoices totalling over £130,000 for past restorations, servicing etc.The car drove beautifully from its home, some 20 miles away, to our auction galleries in Lewes.FOR NUMEROUS ADDITIONAL IMAGES, PLEASE SEE OUR WEBSITE www.gorringes.co.ukIMPORTANT NOTE - 12% BUYERS PREMIUM PLEASE NOTE:- Prospective buyers are strongly advised to examine personally any goods in which they are interested BEFORE the auction takes place. • Sold on behalf of a deceased estate • An exceptional example that runs and drives well The Lagonda car company was founded in 1906 in Staines, Middlesex by the American Wilbur Gunn (1859-1920), who named it after a river near his hometown of Springfield, Ohio. Gunn had started out building motorcycles. In 1907, he launched his first car and in 1910 won the Moscow to St. Petersburg Trial driving a 16/18bhp model. Having established its reputation, Lagonda concentrated mainly on the production of light cars before reverting to sporting and luxury models in the mid-1920s with the introduction of the 14/60. This four-cylinder, 2.0 litre model was joined in 1929 by the first Lagonda six-cylinder engine, the 3.0 litre, but by the mid-1930s, the Meadows-engined cars were seen as the way forward. Introduced at the 1933 Olympia Show and based on the preceding ZM 3.0 litre model, the M45 which deployed the Meadows’ 4.5 litre, twin-plug six-cylinder to good effect with saloons being capable of reaching 90mph and tourers even hitting ‘the ton’ under favourable conditions! A team of three specially prepared short-chassis cars (effectively the soon-to-be-announced M45 Rapide) prepared by Lagonda main agents, Fox & Nicholls, performed creditably at the 1934 RAC Tourist Trophy at Ards and the following year, one of these TT cars driven by John Hindmarsh and Luis Fontes won the Le Mans 24 Hour endurance classic outright. Endowed with such an impeccable pedigree, the Lagonda 4.5 litre quickly established itself as a favourite among the wealthy sporting motorists of its day - World Land Speed Record holder, Sir Malcolm Campbell was one of many high-profile M45 owners – and over 80 years on, this model and the M45R Rapide in particular, remains a much sought-after classic. This lovely Lagonda M45 with the desirable factory T7 touring body was first registered on 28th October 1933. Reading the information from the HPI certificate the car was repainted in 1991, changing the colour from green/black to all green. We believe that this M45 was purchased by Mr. Simon Carrel in 2011 and was stored in Wargrave, Berkshire from June 2013. It has been used sparingly since and the longest trip he did with the car was for a weekend in the West Country for a friend’s wedding. While at Wargrave the car was started regularly, and any minor problems were dealt with by Mr. Carroll and the larger work was carried out by Historic racing specialist George Fowles keeping the car running and driving superbly. Recently the car has been recommissioned which included replacing the battery, cleaning the fuel system and rebuilding the carburettors. This lovely example is finished in green with green leather interior and has been kept to its original specification. This is an exceptional example which is totally reliable, ready to be used and has all the style one would expect from a 1930’s Lagonda. Consigned by John Tomlin Interested parties should note that a new V5 registration document has been applied for from DVLA and is due shortly. Lot 161

• Sold on behalf of a deceased estate • Completely restored In the Edwardian era, Lagonda concentrated mainly on the production of light cars before revertingto sporting and luxury models in the mid-1920’s with the introduction of the 14/60. Designed by Arthur Davidson, the two-litre, four-cylinder engine featured twin camshafts mounted high in the block and operated inclined valves in hemispherical combustion chambers. Power output of this advanced engine was a highly respectable 60bhp. For the 1929 racing season, a ‘low chassis’ Speed Model was introduced, featuring revisions to the chassis front end and a higher compression engine fitted with twin carburettors. The Speed Model had resulted from the factory’s Le Mans effort of 1928 when the 2.0 Litre, driven by André d'Erlanger and Douglas Hawkes finished 11th overall in the 24 Hour Endurance Classic. In 1930, a supercharged version was introduced with a ‘blower’ mounted vertically in front of the engine and fitted with a counterweighted crankshaft. A Powerplus supercharger was specified at first, but most ‘blown’ 2.0 Litres came with a Cozzette supercharger. Thus equipped, a ‘low chassis 2.0 Litre was capable of up to 90mph. This ‘Low Chassis’ 2.0 Litre was offered for sale in December 2001 at Bonhams Olympia auction where it was purchased by Mr. Simon Carrel. Originally one of the supercharger-equipped models, chassis number 'OH9859' retains its original and extremely rare fabric-covered four-door tourer coachwork, which has been preserved as part of a no expense-spared, 'ground upwards' restoration. This was carried out with the aim of producing a usable car, not a concours winner car. The restoration included boring and stroking the engine to approximately 2.4 litres and installing a new solid billet Allen crankshaft, new Cosworth con-rods and pistons, and high-lift camshafts. A new downdraft, crossflow cylinder head was specially cast (in iron) and gas flowed, and a pre-war Rootes-type Wade supercharger acquired. The engine has been bench tested and produced 148bhp. The supercharger's original position was vertical in front of the engine while the dynamo sat beneath the radiator protruding forward. It was discovered that the Wade blower would not fit in the 'correct' position but would fit under the radiator, so the positions of the dynamo and supercharger were swapped, making the Lagonda look a bit like a blown 4½ litre Bentley. The car came with an Alvis Speed 20 synchromesh gearbox fitted, which has been retained, while the clutch has been converted and is now a Borg & Beck unit. All corossion was removed from the bodywork, which was strengthened and re-covered in new fabric, while the interior received new leather seats and panelling. Proper Lucas P100 'Bulls Eyes' were sourced and installed, and all the chrome work re-plated. 'PL 6619' was restored with a view to vintage competitions and we are advised that all the modifications are VSCC accepted because they were possible in pre-war days. It is extremely fast, 0-60mph in under 11 seconds, very reliable and great fun. It has enormous torque and will pull up any hill in third gear and easily outperforms any standard 4½ litre Lagonda. Consigned by John Tomlin Interested parties should note that a new V5 registration document has been applied for from DVLA and is due shortly.
