When you can start recognising people in silhouette, that's when you know a band has reached a certain status".Additional provenance:This lot comes from the Rockarchive Collection, founded by acclaimed music photographer Jill Furmanovsky in 1998. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991) - Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip and Sultan Hand-Painted Cel Setup and Production Background - A hand-painted cel setup featuring the beloved enchanted objects Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and Sultan, the footstool from Walt Disney's animated film Beauty and the Beast, placed over the actual screen-used production background.Although Beauty and the Beast was the first Disney feature to use CAPS (Computer Animation Production System) for final colouring, thereby eliminating the traditional cel painting from the production process, Disney recognised collectors' interest in physical artwork as they have done since the 1930's with supplying the Courvoisier galleries. For the 1992 Sotheby's The Art of Beauty and the Beast auction, 249 unique setups were created, using hand-inked and painted cels based on original animation drawings, carefully matched to actual production backgrounds used in the film. The result: a hybrid of artistry and authenticity, offering collectors the closest experience to owning a piece of the finished film. This lot was part of the Sotheby's auction. This piece is a true collector's piece. Rare, character-rich, and directly tied to the making of an Oscar-winning classic. This scene captures a moment of comic tension and curiosity as Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and the faithful footstool Sultan peer in horror and amazement. The background here is a masterclass in layout and lighting, with rich burgundy tones, gilded mouldings, and elegant architectural perspective rendered in gouache. The cel characters pop with warmth and vitality, and their lighting effects are carefully considered to match the background's highlights and shadow. A Walt Disney Productions stamp is present on the back of the piece and the lot is accompanied by a The Art of Beauty and the Beast certificate of authenticity. Dimensions: 32 cm x 43.25 cm (12.5" x 17")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M

Lot 350

FANTASIA (1940) - Original Concept Artwork of Centaurettes Bathing Scene from The "Pastoral Symphony" - This original concept artwork from Walt Disney's Fantasia captures one of the film's most ethereal and visually poetic sequences, the centaurettes (or fauns) bathing in the enchanted glen, part of the "Pastoral Symphony" segment inspired by Beethoven's music.Fantasia was an audacious experiment combining high art, classical music, and cutting-edge animation. It redefined what animation could be and became a critical milestone in Disney's artistic legacy. Artwork from this film is exceedingly scarce, particularly finished large-scale concepts like this, as much was lost or discarded after production. The imagery is likely attributed to one of the legendary Disney studio artists of the era, possibly James Bodrero or Martin Provensen, who both worked extensively on the film's development team. Bodrero, in particular, was known for his classical training and brought a European fine art sensibility to the animation process, especially visible in the mythological settings of Fantasia. His pastel and gouache works set the tone for the elegant, dreamlike quality of the "Pastoral Symphony."What makes this piece especially significant is the sheer beauty and size of the composition, designed as part of the film's early visual development. Large-scale concept works like this were crucial to the Disney production process, guiding colour palettes, lighting, and mood before a single cel was painted.Rendered in soft pastels, this artwork radiates the delicate atmosphere, grace, and light that made Fantasia a landmark in the history of animation. The pastel medium was a favourite of the Disney concept artists to create atmospheric depth and emotion. This piece comes with visible pinholes, a telling mark of its original use on studio boards where Walt Disney and his team would have reviewed it. The artwork features the iconic Walt Disney Productions stamp in the bottom right corner, and a filing stamp on the reverse, signed and dated, confirming its place in the production process. Two corners of the paper have degraded, but the lot remains in excellent condition considering its age. Dimensions: 30.5 x 38.5 cm (12" x 15")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: †

1930 Rolls-Royce 20/25hp Doctor’s Coupé with coachwork by Hooper Registration Number: RX 6000 Chassis Number: GDP 28 Engine Number: I7W In wonderful condition throughout and with the most impressive of history files, this grand Rolls-Royce is presented in blue over black coachwork with a fine red coach line. The car features a folding pram hood and dickey seat, Lucas lighting, wheel discs, rear-mounted spare wheel carrier and fishtail exhaust. As it has been used as regular transport over the years, indicators and seat belts have been added for safety. Inside, the car is extremely comfortable and well appointed, with blue-grey leather trim and beautiful wooden dash and door cappings, with a Paddon Bros. Ltd. supplier's plate to the dash. The engine compartment is extremely nicely presented and to very original specification, and has a fabulous Boa Constrictor bulb horn present. First owned by the 7th Marquess of Downshire until after the Second World War, the car was purchased by the current owner’s parents in 1947. They used it as their only car until they could no longer fit in their three children (one of whom was the present owner!), so with great regret they sold it in 1955 and bought a Rolls-Royce saloon instead. In 1984, the car came into the possession of David Pollock, a surgeon from Shrewsbury. By this time it was in very poor condition and Mr Pollock performed an amazing restoration job over six years, winning a number of trophies and prizes as a result. In 2003, the present owner was invited as a guest to the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club National Rally at Towcester. Incredibly, he spied the well-remembered registration number 'RX 6000' and introduced himself to the owner. The long and short of it was that he purchased his father's old car and was able to reacquaint himself with it after nearly fifty years! Running and driving very well and in regular use, the Rolls-Royce comes with an incredible history file spanning nearly a century of documentation. This includes copies of the original build sheets, a quantity of MoTs over the last six decades and details of its ownership history, extensive maintenance and various restorations over the years. It is, of course, MoT-exempt and benefits from free 'Historic' road fund licence. In the owner’s words, 'it is a wonderful motor-car which has fully repaid all the love and care it has received over the past twenty years'.

19th Century Irish School “Fishing Party at Knockdrin Castle,” O.O.C., c. 1860, 147cms x 34cms (58” x 92). (1) An ambitious painting, depicting a fishing party by a lake, this work bears a faded label giving details of the location: the words ‘A Fishing Party, at  . . Levinge’s estate, Knockdrin Castle c 1860’, being just about decipherable. Located six miles from Mullingar, in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Knockdrin Castle was home to the Levinge family. A member of the judiciary, the first Sir Richard Levinge played an important role in post-Williamite Ireland, and purchased Knockdrin from the Tuite family. Around 1815, he rebuilt the castle as a large Gothic Revival country house, the gutters of which still bear the Levinge arms. Winston Churchill and his mother were among the many guests that stayed at Knockdrin over the years, participating in hunting parties for which the estate was famous. Although naif in style, this painting is an ambitious group portrait, depicting Sir Richard Levinge and his guests, and ghillies, enjoying in a fishing party. The lake depicted is probably Lough Drin, and the party may have been linked to the completion of a castellated gatehouse in 1860,  Apart from a man and woman on horseback, all those present are either seated or standing. One ghillie has a net, while another holds up a fish to be inspected by a man, probably Levinge himself, who holds a split-cane fishing rod. Levinge is dressed in a light blue suit and yellow waistcoat, with a straw boater on the ground beside his feet. To his left, a man wearing a straw boater is lighting a pipe, while to the right, a third ghillie holds a long fishing rod. In the left foreground, six fashionably attired women are seated around a picnic table. Wearing colourful dresses and hats, they are eating and drinking, with one, wearing a yellow dress, holding out her glass to be filled. On the extreme right, a basket of fish is being emptied into a horse-drawn cart, while another fisherman pulls at a line in the water, probably a net. A large earthenware jug sits by the water’s edge. Probably organized to entertain distinguished visitors, the fishing party was clearly a significant event in the estate calendar, so much so that it was considered worthy of recording in a painting. It is a valuable record of society in Ireland in Victorian times. The identity of the artist is not known, but it is likely by an amateur painter, who was seeking to emulate the hunting scenes of well-known artists such as William Osborne. Dr. Peter Murray 2025

18th Century School   “The Massacre of the Innocents”, (copy of original by Nicolas Poussin), O.O.C., c.1850, approx. 64cms x 76cms (25” x 30”). (1) Dating probably from the mid-nineteenth century, this copy of Nicholas Poussin’s The Massacre of the Innocents is an almost exact replica of the original, conveying all of the barbarism and tragedy of the scene, taken from the Gospel of St. Matthew. The original was commissioned in the 1620’s by the Roman banker Vincenzo Giustiniani. A leading patron of the arts, Giustiniani had assembled one of the finest collections in Italy and was also a patron of Caravaggio. The commission was a prestigious one, particularly for such a young artist. Poussin rose to the challenge, seeking to outdo Guido Reni’s famous painting of the same subject, painted in 1611 for the Basilica San Domenico in Bologna. He devised a dramatic composition resembling a theatre stage, with the main protagonists in the foreground, and subsidiary characters in the background. The architectural setting of a Greek temple adds to the intensity of the work. The action is concentrated on three main figures, the soldier who places his foot on the infant, the distraught mother, and the dying child. As well as Guido Reni, the influence of Caravaggio is evident, particularly in the use of stark lighting to emphasis the tragedy of the scene. The Massacre of the Innocents was displayed at the Palazzo Giustiniani and quickly became one of the most celebrated works of art in Rome. Over the centuries, it has continued to inspire artists, notably Picasso, who in the 1920’s and 30’s based several paintings on Poussin’s work, while Francis Bacon described the mother’s cry of anguish as ‘one of the best ever painted’. The original is now in the Musée Condé de Chantilly, in France. Dr. Peter Murray 2025

MONET CLAUDE: (1840-1926) French Impressionist painter. A fine A.L.S., Claude Monet, two pages (written to the first and final sides of the bifolium), n.p. (Rouen), n.d. (´Mardi soir, 9h 1/2´, 1892/93), to [Alice Hoschedé] (´Ma cherie´), in French. Monet states that he is sending a few lines so that his wife doesn´t worry and informs her that he has just finished dinner at Deauville (?), remarking that he had promised to go at 6.30pm, but ´J´étais encore devant ma cathedrale, fievreux et assoncé de fatigue´ (Translation: ´I was still in front of my cathedral, feverish and overcome with fatigue´) and adding ´Ce ne sera pas faute d´energie si je n´en tire pas quelque chose. Mais que de mal malgré cet admirable temps´ (Translation: ´It won't be for lack of energy if I don't get something out of it. But what a pain, despite the wonderful weather´). Monet also thanks his wife for all the trouble she is taking over an unfortunate piece of land and expresses his hope that the permission will be finally given to close it. The artist concludes his letter in affectionate terms and in a postscript makes a reference to his stepdaughter, ´C´est demain le retour de Marthe que de choses elle aura à raconter´ (Translation: ´Marthe is coming back tomorrow; she will have so much to tell´). A letter of excellent content, conjuring up a wonderful image of Monet at work on one of his famous series of paintings of Rouen Cathedral. About EXAlice Hoschedé Monet (1844-1911) French artists' model, wife of the art collector Ernest Hoschedé and later of the Impressionist painter Claude Monet (from 1892).Marthe Hoschedé Butler (1864-1925) was the daughter of Alice and Ernest Hoschedé. In 1900 Marthe married Claude Monet´s friend, the American Impressionist painter Theodore Earl Butler (1861-1936). Butler had previously been married to Marthe´s sister, Suzanne, from 1892 until her death in 1899. The famous series of paintings Monet made of Rouen Cathedral - more than thirty in total - were created between 1892 and 1893 and then reworked in Monet´s studio in 1894, before being exhibited in Paris the following year. Each of the paintings capture the facade of the cathedral at different times of the day and year and reflect changes in its appearance under different lighting conditions. Historically, the series was well-timed. In the early 1890s, France was seeing a revival of interest in Catholicism and the subject of one of its major cathedrals was well received. Apart from its religious significance, Rouen Cathedral - built in the Gothic style - could be seen as representing all that was best in French history and culture.

MONET CLAUDE: (1840-1926) French Impressionist painter. A good A.L.S., Claude Monet, two pages (written to the first and fourth sides of the bifolium), 8vo, n.p. (Rouen), n.d. (7th April 1893), to Alice Hoschedé, in French. Monet states that he will send a few words ´car il est tard et mon frère m´attend au café´ (Translation: ´because it's late and my brother is waiting for me at the café´), lamenting the fact that he may have hurt her feelings, but is aware of his condition, ´J´ai un orgueil et un amour propre du diable´ (Translation: ´ I have an ego and self-esteem like hell´). Si le temps continue je me donne 8 jours et s´il n´y a pas progrès je lache´ (Translation: ´I want to do better and want these cathedrals to be very good, and I can't. I flounder and struggle with the same searches, to the detriment of many things, and when I have to admit after days of work that I haven't made any progress, I have to face the facts. It's very sad, and it's eating away at me. The weather was superb today and I worked like a Trojan. If the weather holds, I'll give it eight days, and if there's no progress, I'll give up´). In concluding the artist confirms that he will be in Vernon early the following morning, unless the weather turns grey, and sends his kisses and best wishes to all. A couple of small, minor ink blots to the text. The present letter is also of interest for its reference to Monet´s little-known elder brother, Léon Monet (1836-1917). Léon Monet, a chemist and industrialist with a factory in Rouen, was one of the first patrons of the Impressionist movement who not only supported his brother when he was poor and struggling to make his name, but also assisted other painters including Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, and Alfred Sisley. Léon Monet built a remarkable collection of art and had his portrait painted by Claude Monet in 1874.
