* Purse. An embroidered lute-shaped purse (or sweete bag?), early 18th century, purse in the shape of a powder flask, padded (probably with horse hair) and embroidered with coloured and metallised threads, using mainly long and short stitch and stem stitch, and incorporating two small beads (remaining few missing), with flowers tied in a bow and stems of daffodils, carnation, and tulip above, on a beige grosgrain ground, faded and dusty, backed with green silk, and with a pouch of the same sewn to the back, gathered with drawstring ribbon of woven cream, green, and metallised silver threads (a little frayed to one side), the two ends of the ribbon caught together in a metal thread toggle, purse edged with woven metallic braid, 9.5 x 6 cm (3.75 x 2.25 ins)QTY: (1)NOTE:Provenance: Lady Ottoline Morrell (1873-1938); thence by descent.A most unusual early purse; we have not been able to trace another the same either at auction or in an institution. The British Museum has a purse not wholly dissimilar, made of velvet and purporting to have been given by King Henry VIII to Anne Boleyn (registration number 1878,1101.635): 'Curator's comments - This is an unusual construction and its purpose is not clear'. The Rijksmuseum, Netherlands, also has a padded shaped purse of velvet (more akin to the British Museum's than that offered here), which they call 'in the shape of scissors (phallus?)' - object number BK-KOG-29.Although these two examples are referred to as purses, it seems more likely, given the contruction, that our receptacle was intended to be filled with sweet-smelling herbs such as lavender, so that a lady could wear it around her neck to ward off infection and unpleasant odours, much like the more commonly found sweete bags of the 16th and 17th centuries. The delicate silk could only have been used to hold something light, and the narrow opening at the top would have been enough for a lady's nose to imbibe the sweet scent within, rather like a perfume bottle.

Circle of Bernard van Orley,  Flemish 1491/92-1541- Two angels, one playing the lute, and the other plating the rebec; oils on panel, each with a decorative scheme verso, each 44.5 x 12.8 cm., a pair (2). Provenance:  Property of the Hon. James Bruce sale, Christie's, London, 7 March 1980, lot 84 (sold for £4,500).  with Thomas Agnew & Sons, London, 1980 [no.43945].  The Collection of Professor W. M. Ballantyne (1922-2021), and thence by descent. Note:  Despite never visiting Italy, Van Orley worked very much in the tradition of the Romanists, a group of Flemish painters who were heavily influenced by the work of Italian Renaissance artists, particularly, in Van Orley's case, Raphael (1483-1520). Indeed, as a central proponent of the Romanist approach, Van Orley also shaped the output of future generations of painters, including Michiel Coxie (1499-1592), Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502-1550), and Pieter de Kempeneer (1503-1586), all of whom studied under him. The present work exhibits a clear debt to Van Orley, with the pose and features of the angel on the right-hand side of the composition bearing a striking similarity to the face of the Madonna in a painting by the artist which sold at Hampel, Munich, on 29 June 2023, lot 180.

Miniature Chinese Folding Tabletop Screen A decorative four-panel folding tabletop screen, likely of Chinese origin. Each panel features a hand-painted ceramic or porcelain tile set within a light-toned wooden frame, connected by brass hinges. The frames include pierced fretwork designs at the top and bottom, with darker-toned openwork detailing at the base adding to its craftsmanship. The painted porcelain tiles depict traditional Chinese scenes, carefully rendered with delicate brushstrokes. These include landscapes showcasing mountains, trees, rivers, bridges, and pavilions in soft tones alongside female figures in vibrant traditional attire engaging in cultural activities such as playing a pipa (lute), painting, or holding decorative objects. The paintings use a naturalistic palette with occasional bright accents. Each tile contains vertical Chinese calligraphy inscriptions and red seal stamps, likely artist markings or poetic verses related to the imagery. One panel includes a date, "1988.6.7," suggesting a late 20th-century creation, possibly drawing on traditional artistic styles. Approximate dimensions estimate the height of the panels to be 25–40 cm. This screen served as a decorative display item, highlighting traditional Chinese artistry and cultural themes. It is an intact example of craftsmanship, reflecting both aesthetic and collectible value.
