CARTIER: A RARE AND COLLECTIBLE LAPIS LAZULI, TURQUOISE AND DIAMOND NOVELTY CLIP BROOCH, CIRCA 1945The stylised scarab, with carved lapis lazuli body, a turquoise cabochon head, highlighted with single-cut diamond eyes and rose-cut feet at the front, mounted in 18K gold and platinum, signed Cartier Paris, with maker's mark, French assay marks, with maker's case, length 2.7cmAn identical brooch is illustrated, page 164, in the catalogue of the Cartier exhibition, L'Art de Cartier at the Musée du Petit Palais between October 1989-January 1990, by Hans Nadelhoffer. The discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 sparked a cultural phenomenon that extended far beyond archaeology. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, the Egyptian Revival style swept across the decorative arts, leaving its mark on everything from ceramics and prints to furniture and, most strikingly, jewellery. Museums in Cairo and touring exhibitions in London and Paris further solidified the global fascination, showcasing the dynamic dialogue between age-old myths and contemporary design. The era’s fascination with ancient Egypt found a perfect partner in the materials and aesthetics of Art Deco: platinum, diamonds, onyx, and vibrant enamel brought ancient motifs into the modern age. Designers reimagined scarabs, sphinxes, lotuses, and hieroglyphs through the lens of contemporary luxury, resulting in pieces that were at once reverent and boldly forward-looking. Among the jewellers of the time, Cartier distinguished itself not merely by mimicking Egyptian symbols but by engaging directly with history. Louis Cartier developed a personal passion for Egyptian antiquity, travelling and acquiring genuine archaeological objects from dealers who handled finds from ongoing excavations. Rather than replicate ancient designs, Cartier incorporated these authentic artifacts such as scarabs, faience fragments, and deity heads into his own creations, elevating them with platinum and diamonds to craft sophisticated Art Deco jewels that were both historically rooted and stylistically avant-garde. This approach set Cartier apart, offering clients pieces that were not just inspired by the past but built from it. Egyptian-inspired jewellery is defined by its rich symbolism and vibrant palette. Gold, regarded as the skin of the gods, and silver, seen as divine bone, were used alongside vivid lapis lazuli, symbolising the intense, sky-like blue hair of the deities. Turquoise and green hues evoked the protective qualities of water and the Mediterranean. Jewellers embraced these colours and symbols, often incorporating amulets like the scarab, which in ancient mythology was observed pushing its ball in the desert, as a metaphor for the sun’s journey at dawn and a symbol of rebirth, cosmic order, good luck, and fortune. With the advent of global conflict, significant material shortages and restrictions rapidly transformed the landscape of jewellery production. The scarcity of platinum and diamonds forced designers to adopt innovative solutions without sacrificing the aesthetic values of their style. In response, jewellers began experimenting with advanced alloys and a wider array of semi-precious stones, reinterpreting traditional motifs with alternative materials that mimicked the allure of their predecessors. These necessary adaptations led to creative breakthroughs, ensuring that the symbolic richness and visual impact of their creations endured even in times of adversity. Even after the height of its popularity at the beginning of the 19th century, Egyptomania continued to resonate through popular culture. The mid-to-late 20th century saw waves of renewed interest thanks to cinema, particularly Hollywood films of the 1960s through the 1980s featuring mummies, curses, and pharaohs. These narratives reignited public fascination with Egypt’s mystique, sustaining its influence in both fashion and fine jewellery. From screen to studio, the mythos of ancient Egypt remained a rich source of inspiration and proving that, even decades later, its magic still had the power to captivate and create. Comprehensive main dealer and specialist service history with 16 stampsBelt service in November 2024 at Maranello EghamOptioned with the factory HGTS packageIn current ownership since 2015ULEZ exemptThe 612 Scaglietti was penned by Frank Stephenson under Ken Okuyama at Pininfarina, and it is said that design, especially the strident side scallops and headlights, were a nod to the coachbuilt 1954 375 MM that film director, Roberto Rossellini, had commissioned for his wife Ingrid Bergan. The newcomer replaced the outgoing 456 but, being physically larger, was a genuine four-seat Grand Tourer. It was Ferrari's second all-aluminium vehicle and comprised of a spaceframe manufactured in conjunction with Alcoa, that was a combination of extrusions and castings to which the body was then welded. The same chassis formed the basis of Ferrari's 599 GTB flagship Grand Tourer. The front, mid-mounted, V12 powerplant was shared with the 575 Superamerica and was not six litres as the name suggests but 5.7, though big enough for a healthy power output of 533bhp and equally impressive performance figures, including a 0-62mph time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed north of the magic 200mph. A total of just 3,025 examples were manufactured between 2004 and 2011, all but 199 of which featured the F1A gearbox. The car we have here is beautifully specified in Grigio Silverstone with a Nero interior and gorgeous (heated) Daytona seats with Grigio Scuro stitching. The specification also extends to yellow brake calipers and Scuderia shields, as well as the HGTS package, which included a sport exhaust, sport tuned suspension and gearbox and 19” Modular wheels. Our vendor purchased the car in 2015 and has maintained it regardless of cost during his ownership, as it also was before his tenure began. The car has been serviced by Maranello Egham for the past ten years, so they know the car very well. The service history is absolutely as one would expect, with 16 stamps in the book, from a mixture of main agents and well-respected Ferrari specialists. The most recent service was carried out by Maranello Egham who also changed the auxiliary and drive belts, giving the next owner peace of mind in that department for the next five years or 30,000 miles. The front shock absorbers were also replaced in 2021 at Maranello Egham, around 1,500 miles ago. The history file is particularly impressive, this 612 has clearly been a cherished car since day one and has always been properly maintained. The car comes complete with its battery charger in leather bound case, toolkit in leather bound case and owner’s manuals and books also in a beautiful leather wallet. The 612 is gaining in popularity and we think is looking even better with age. Supplied to auction with a V5C registration document, earlier mentioned service history with supporting invoices and an MoT test certificate valid until November 2025. Cartier: A 'Trinity' ring The three interconnecting 18 carat tri-coloured gold bands, signed Cartier, maker's mark, numbered, European convention mark, Swiss assay mark, Cartier size 50Accompanied by a Cartier case. Louis Cartier was a gentleman who curated an electric and fascinating group of friends and counted amongst his close circle in Paris the famed aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, Jeanne Toussaint and the poet Jean Cocteau. As the story goes, one evening in the early 1920s, Cocteau described dreaming of the rings of Saturn to Louis Cartier. He asked Louis to transform the magic of those celestial rings into a small ring for his little finger. The engineering behind perfecting the smooth rolling motion of three bands gliding over each other, without catching the wearer’s skin or becoming rigid required an engineering masterstroke, one which Cartier’s workshop on the Rue de la Paix was by now well used to fulfilling. In 1924 Louis presented Cocteau with a small ring of three interconnecting bands, devoid of any further decoration. Cocteau declared Louis was “a subtle magician who captures fragments of the moon on a thread of the sun”. Cocteau would go on to wear that ring for decades to come, making him the perfect ambassador of what would become one of the most sought-after rings for both men and women.Initially platinum was used for one of the bands but it was later replaced by white gold. The design was known at the time as bague trois ors (triple gold ring) or a bague trois anneaux (triple-ringed ring). Just the following year, the design was enlarged into a bangle. The first bangle was purchased in 1925 by Elsie de Wolfe, a famed American interior designer. In 1925 American Vogue ran editorial on Cartier's new jewellery including an image of the model Luella Kendall Lee wearing two stacked Trinity bracelets and a ring. Lee would go on to marry one of Cartier New York's top sales executives, Jules Glaenzer. Vogue described them as “amazingly chic” and also “very moderate in price”. Highlighting the conscious choice to begin to curate a wider client base. Fans of the Trinity collection include amongst others King Charles III, Gary Cooper, Princess Diana, Grace Kelly and King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor, who wore two stacked upon his little finger.
