Spot-mounted under mat. - According to Shirley, one of the most beautiful world maps of all time. With two hemispheres and two additional, smaller illustrations of the poles. The vignettes depict the four seasons, the elements and the signs of the zodiac. The map shows the discoveries of the explorer Abel Janszoon Tasman, which he made around Australia in the years 1642-1644. New Zealand is merely indicated by a coastline, and California is still depicted as an island. The Dutch cartographer Frederick de Wit became one of the most important publishers in Amsterdam after Blaeu's closure in 1679. - Paper and age-related somewhat browned, slightly fingerstained, the colouring on the verso somewhat seeping through, occasional pale brown stains in the margins. Overall well preserved.
