A GEORGE III MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT LIBRARY BOOKCASE CIRCA 1770 The glazed top with adjustable shelves, the base with oak lined drawers flanking panelled doors 235cm high, 210cm wide, 56cm deepProvenance: Private Collection The private collector advised by John Parry, and purchased for £85,000 from Anthony Fell Antiques in the 1990's Condition Report: Bookcase with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. The expected old splits and chips - see images. Repair to central element of cresting - see images. Some additional dark marks and ring marks to top of the waist. Metalware appears original. Keys present and operate the locks to the glazed doors and the central doors to the base. No key present for the locks of the drawers, these are all open. Glazing appears original. It has the expected 'wave' and imperfections for glass of the period. Piece is of exceptional quality and showcases high level London craftmanship of the period. Condition Report: Table with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Old splits and chips - see images. Some old repairs to veneers and mouldings - see images. Some filler applied to timber in places. Tooled leather inset surface is likely an old replacement. It has good age and bears the expected wear, fading creases and abrasions. Metalware replaced. Handles are in period taste and suit the table well. Key present and operates two locks. The other two without key but are open. Old plugged hole to stem between where tow of the legs meet the stem. Y A FINE GEORGE III WEST INDIAN SATINWOOD SOFA TABLE CIRCA 1790 Crossbanded in burr yew and tulipwood 71.5cm high, 145cm wide, 63cm deep Condition Report: Table with the marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. The expected minor old splits and chips. Remarkably well figured satinwood and interesting burr yew and tulipwood crossbanding. A few minor old veneer repairs. Some isolated old worm holes to the friezes beneath hinged leaves (as often seen, as these elements are constructed from softwood). Metalware appears original. No key is present but both locks are open. As commonly seen on sofa tables of this form, there is a very slight movement within the frame but the piece is structurally sound overall. A GEORGE I CARVED GILTWOOD AND GESSO GIRANDOLE MIRROR CIRCA 1720 124cm high, 60.5cm wide Condition Report: Marks, knocks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use The gilding generally appears to be original and of the period - some areas of possible refreshing to the gilding in places though this is minimal and sympathetically carried out. The mirror plate has significant age and bears the bloom, wear and foxing, however we cannot guarantee it is original to the frame. The metalware appears to be original. The reverse of the frame with old holes from previous hanging fixtures. The mirror of excellent craftsmanship and quality. John Walsh March 1856' 209.5cm high, 93cm wide, 49cm deepThe engraved plaque relating to the Digby and the Walsh families, 'This Secretary was constantly used by my dearest MOTHER since my earliest recollection. At her death in 1836 it became the property of my dear Sister MRS DIGBY, who bequeathed it to me in her WILL. I have given it to my daughter AUGUSTA ROSA WALSH who is thought most to resemble her GRANDMOTHER. John Walsh March 1856'. A PAIR OF OPENWORK ZAND-STYLE QAJAR BRASS LIDDED INCENSE BURNERS Qajar Iran, late 19th centuryEach of globular shape, with gently tapering sides rising from a short splayed foot, surmounted by domed lids terminating in bud-like finials, crafted from brass with meticulous openwork, each vessel engraved with detailed figural, floral, and geometric motifs characteristic of Qajar aesthetics harking back at the Zand period, the lids finely pierced and engraved with alternating figural and calligraphic cartouches depicting mythical and real figures set amidst interwoven floral arabesques, interspersed with elegant calligraphic cartouches featuring stylised thuluth script, resting above a narrow beaded band, the bowls decorated with continuous narrative friezes depicting seated courtiers and musicians, each figure set within an arched niche amidst foliate patterns, above stylised scrolling motifs and below a foot with finely triangular fretwork.Each 22cm diam. and 27.8cm high This pair of incense burners exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and decorative vocabulary characteristic of Qajar Iran, heavily influenced by earlier Zand-period aesthetics known for their opulence and artistic exuberance. Cairo, Egypt, early 20th centuryOf deep rounded shape, with tapering profile and reinforced circular rim, the exterior profusely inlaid with a large epigraphic band of silver and copper thuluth calligraphy, set against a typical Mamluk-revival Y-shaped ground, interspersed amidst two roundels featuring entwined split palmette arabesques, with a silver and brass calligraphic cartouche in the middle, a band of interlocking split palmettes forming decorative arches around the base and a petalled frieze around the rim.27cm diameter and 14cm high This bowl represents the high craftsmanship of late Ottoman and early 20th-century Cairo metalware, dating to a period when the revival of Mamluk decorative arts flourished in Egypt, and the so-called “Cairoware” became highly sought-after among both local elites and European collectors.
