Registration – WNE 837LChassis No. – YB57689DLM.O.T. – ExemptOdometer – 19,305Despite being over 50 years old, ā€˜WNE837L’ has known only four keepers to date. The first two accounted for the first 46 years of this Triumph’s life. The current owner acquired ā€˜WNE837L’ just two years ago. Today ā€˜WNE837L’ records just 19,305 miles on its odometer. This can’t be warranted but the vendor reports it is feasibly original based on ā€˜WNE837L’s’ condition and presentation. A high level of originality is noted, and much remedial work has been undertaken in current ownership. This includes five new tyres and a new battery. ā€˜WNE837L’ is classified as an Historic Vehicle based on age and so is zero rated for VED and MOT exempt. ā€˜WNE837L’ is being offered here with NO RESERVE.ā€˜WNE837L’ is thought to present in it's original factory paintwork of Mineral Blue. This combines well with the deeply chromed radiator grill, bumpers and overriders and panel edging strips. The originality, as with the rest of the car, is most striking and the vendor notes there is a ā€œlittle patinaā€ to the exterior of ā€˜WNE837L.’ The design of the Triumph 1500 was the work of the celebrated Giovanni Michelotti who did a number of designs for the firm during the ā€˜60’s and ā€˜70’s. The interior is another time warp experience looking much as it would have done from new. Triumph’s place in the BMC firmament was as an upmarket offering so there is plenty of wood veneer, chromed fittings and deep carpets in evidence. The predominant shades are variations of blue with some black vinyl noted in places. The paintwork, bodywork and interior are all rated as ā€œgood.ā€ā€˜WNE837L’ is fitted with the 1493cc version of the Standard SC engine and is fitted with a single SU carburettor in this application. This endowed the original with around 65bhp which proved plenty for a sub-1000kg car. Much work has been undertaken during current ownership to include new brake cylinders all round, a new old stock exhaust system, a refurbished fuel tank and a replacement clutch slave cylinder. Modern electronic ignition has also been fitted. In summary:· A highly original example of the breed with just four owners to date.· Much remedial work done in the current ownership so ready to enjoy.· MOT exempt and zero rated for road tax based on Historic Vehicle status.

Lot 194

A porphyry artist's palette and associated pestle,  India, 19th century or earlierOf hexagonal shape and deep red colour, the edge with groove, to one end an oval indentation, the pestle widening towards the rounded base,29cm long x 16.8cm diam(2)Provenance: Formerly in the collection of Oliver Hoare published Jean Claude Cianciminio, Every Object Tells a Story, Cromwell Place, 2017; by repute Spink & SonsWhile the Romans mined porphyry on an industrial scale for three centuries and more, the Byzantines recycled it on a post-industrial scale for much longer. Constantine’s column in Istanbul has five great drums of carved porphyry; Santa Sophia is splattered with it; the official delivery room for pregnant empresses in the Great Palace of Constantinople was called the ā€˜Porphyra’. And so, when the  Ottoman Turks took over in 1453, they came into possession of a great deal of the stone, much of it recycled yet again into the decoration of their mosques and palaces. There are even Iznik tile borders in Topkapi Palace imitating porphyry. This bar of it has been transformed into a vessel to grind mineral pigments, and surely belonged to a painter. It is evidence of a tradition of making beautiful artefacts and tools connected with calligraphy and painting

Born in Manchester, he studied medicine and natural sciences at the University of Edinburgh, where he developed a deep interest in geology. Hibbert was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and was widely respected for his contributions to the understanding of volcanic formations, mineralogy, and historical topography. His most significant works include A Description of the Shetland Islands (1822), which provided one of the earliest geological studies of the region, and History of Extinct Volcanos of the Basin of Neuwied (1832), which focused on the volcanic formations of the Rhine Valley. Hibbert’s observations and methodical approach to geological fieldwork made him an important figure in early 19th-century geology. His interdisciplinary work often blended geology with historical and archaeological insights.Published in 1832, History of Extinct Volcanos of the Basin of Neuwied is a geological study of the extinct volcanic formations in the Neuwied Basin, located along the Rhine River in Germany. Hibbert’s research in this book offers a comprehensive analysis of the geological structure, mineral composition, and historical impact of these ancient volcanic features. His work contributed significantly to the understanding of past volcanic activity in Central Europe and its influence on the region’s landscape.Hibbert’s study was among the earliest English-language works to explore the role of volcanism in shaping the geological features of the Rhine Valley. He combined firsthand field observations with scientific theory, providing detailed descriptions of lava flows, craters, and volcanic rock formations. His documentation helped solidify the emerging discipline of volcanology in the 19th century.

Border HorseThe Border Horse was raised originally as Weatherley's Horse, after its Colonel, Frederick Augustus Weatherley. On the death of his father-in-law, Weatherley inherited a large sum of money, the majority of which he invested in the recently formed Transvaal Gold Mining Company Limited. The company was formed in London after the discovery of gold on the farm Eerstelling in the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (later to become the Transvaal). The mine failed to flourish and on being told that it was about to be shut down, Weatherley decided towards the end of 1875 to go to South Africa to see if it could be rescued; first resident in Pretoria, thereafter Eerstelling in early 1876, he took charge as Managing Director. With one eye on mineral rights over Government land in Zoutpansberg, Weatherley joined President Burger's Force as a staff officer, and then was appointed by Chelmsford, much in need of mounted troops, to raise one hundred and fifty Volunteers; the public became aware of the formation of the Regiment with the appearance of an advertisement placed in the Transvaal Argus and Commercial Gazette on 20 November 1878.Colonel Weatherley and 38 of his men would fall at Inhlobane on 28 March 1879. Sprawled on top of his body lay that of his 14-year-old son Rupert, who was serving under him as a Sub Lieutenant. When last seen, the Colonel was 'supporting his son on one arm, while with the other he was slashing right and left furiously at the Zulu around them.'This famous mounted contingent was heavily engaged at Kambula the next day, and at Sekukini's Town in the following November.246 Medals were issued to the Border Horse, 58 of them without clasp and 158 with the '1879' clasp.South Africa 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1879 (Pte. J. Walsh. Border Horse.), brooch marks to obverse and suspension re-affixed, nearly very fine…
