APHA Ref: ZKJY56TYVery good original condition as seen from the images. No glass present to the frame and lacking backing, therefore loose in the frame.

John Opie RA (British, 1761-1807) Portrait of 'Mr Wilson' in a black jacket, holding spectacles, before a red curtain oil on canvas 77 x 64cm Provenance: By descent within the family of Sir William Foster, 1st Baronet of Norwich (1798–1874), to Janet Foster, 8 Stanley Crescent, London, W11 An ink drawing dated 1801 by Henry Bone, after this painting, is in the National Portrait Gallery collection (NPG D17584), together with a further pencil study by Bone of the same sitter after Sir William Beechey (NPG D17772). The resultant miniature by Bone deriving from the present subject was sold at Christie's, London, 25th May 2004, Lot 32. A further drawing by Bone (NPG D17295), after William Owen, depicts Mrs Wilson and her sister, the memoirist Susan Sibbald (1783-1866), daughters of Dr. Thomas Mein, of Eildon Hall, Roxburghshire, a physician in the Royal Navy. Isabella 'Betsy' Wilson (née Mein), who was born in Cornwall and died in Devon, is recorded as marrying Thomas Wilson, the likely identification of the present sitter, in Marylebone in 1801. It is also possible that Thomas Wilson was related to John Peter Wilson, Captn. Hon. East India Company, whose portrait Opie got up from his deathbed to paint and left unfinished (Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, 1975.087.001).

A French 18ct gold mounted tortoiseshell and lacquered enamel circular powder box with oval portrait miniature to the centre of the lid, the miniature apparently unsigned of an 18th century lady with floral garland to her hair and decolletage, framed in oval of gold, with matching engraved gold edge to the box, which is red enamel, over tortoishell, the outside banded to the top, bottom and lid closure, and with further guilloche enamel to the base, 7.7cm diameter, by 3.4cm depth, total weight 79.1g.
AN INDIAN MAIDEN WITH FLOWERING VASE PROPERTY FROM A CANADIAN COLLECTION Possibly Bikaner, Rajasthan or Punjab Hills, Northern India, second half 19th centuryOpaque pigments heightened with gold and white wash on wove paper, the standing portrait depicting a courtly lady wearing a diaphanous anarkali robe and embroidered jama trousers, with a golden sash on the front and a light yellow shawl with gold borders on the head, the jewellery and attire indicative of her high social status, holding a tall stick with white flowers, and a miniature gold vase with flowering bouquet, set within black and mango yellow rules, and cream and taupe borders, pasted onto thicker card, the reverse with an inscription in pencil reading Maharani Jodha Bai (also known as Mariam-uz-Zamani, a Rajput princess married to the Mughal emperor Akbar and mother of Emperor Jahangir), the old frame (now missing) marked with the retailer sticker of Newman Galleries from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in use between 1935 - 1960.21.8cm x 15.4cm Newman Galleries was an art gallery established by George and Adolph Newman at 806 Market Street in Philadelphia, in 1865. They specialised in works on paper. The gallery was forced to move in 1893, and the brothers dissolved the partnership; George opened a gallery at 1622 Chestnut Street and Adolph opened the Adolph Newman and Son Gallery at 704 Chestnut Street with his son Walter. Adolph and Walter B. Newman were forced to move again in 1918 to 1732 Chestnut Street. In 1920, Adolph retired and left the gallery to his son and to his grandson Walter Andrew Newman. The depression necessitated the move in 1935 to yet another location, this time at 1625 Walnut Street, and in the 1960s a frame and repair shop was added to the business at 2306 South Street. The old retailer sticker of the frame that once contained the present painting must have been in use between the last move and the time when the frame and repair shop were added to the family business. 21.8cm x 15.4cm Qty: 1

Mary Ann Knight (1776-1851), Portrait of Midshipman Richard Thorold, watercolour on ivory, oval, approx. 5.7cm x 7cm, In a gilded and glazed frame. With an accompanying dealer label from Wigs on the Green of York, which reads thus: "Mary Ann Knight (1776-1851), portrait of a midshipman, Richard Thorold, wearing a blue coat with a standing collar, white waistcoat and black stock. Few small minor spots of mould to areas. Note: The Thorolds were a Lincolnshire family of great antiquity. Richard (1789-1864) was the eldest son of Rev. William Thorold and his first wife Frances. He married heiress Frances Tunnard and served as High Sheriff of Lincolnshire. £2,250. Mary Ann Knight took up painting to help with the family finances. She was a pupil of Andrew Plimer who later married her sister Joanna Louisa. She exhibited at at the RA 1803-1836. Her work is always described as resembling that of her teacher and brother-in-law. The Thorolds are listed in the artist's account book as having sat for their portraits in 1804, at a cost of £3 3/- for each miniature." Cites Submission Reference no. C25RFJEV
