A delightful assemblage of five hand-painted German porcelain cherubs, comprising three music-themed angels by Volkstedt and two fruit-and-flower-bearing putti by Sitzendorf. Each figure is rendered in fine porcelain with delicate modeling and vibrant polychrome enamels, showcasing the playful spirit and craftsmanship of early 20th-century Thuringian porcelain production. The Volkstedt angels are presented in seated and kneeling positions, each playing a different gilded instrument: harp, trombone, and French horn. Their expressive faces, feathered wings, and musical poses highlight the factory's legacy of Rococo-inspired design. Underside markings include the blue crowned 'RW' insignia for Aelteste Volkstedter Porzellanmanufaktur. The two remaining cherubs, attributed to Sitzendorf, are similarly adorned with gilt-tipped wings and hold abundant baskets of fruits and flowers. Their joyful features and romantic styling evoke classical allegories of abundance and celebration. These are marked beneath with the blue crown over 'S' hallmark used by the Sitzendorf factory. A charming ensemble of high-quality German figural porcelain, ideal for collectors of angelic miniatures and continental decorative arts. Largest piece 4"H. A very fine A.L., two pages, small 4to, n.p., [1851], to Antonio Duci, in Italian. Rossini reports how excited he is with the new musical instrument, the Baristrato, stating in part `I rejoice with you for the new instrument which I listened to thanks to your brother and which has just arrived here. The musical effect of this new mechanism is wonderful, the oscillating vibration of the low sounds which, in my opinion, are the first merit of this invention with much sense applied to sacred music…´ Rossini, fascinated by this new musical instrument, the Baristrato, further concludes `..they will bring a marvelous vigour to harmony..´ Paper with watermark. Very small overall minor age wear and creasing, otherwise VG Rossini´s correspondent is Antonio Duci, a piano trader from Florence. Rossini refers to Antonio´s brother, Carlo Duci (1837-1900), a renowned pianist and composer. Late Period, circa 664-332 B.C. Modelled in advancing pose wearing a tight-fitting robe, cat-headed, with a sistrum in one hand and a Bes head emblem in the other; suspension loop between shoulders. 3.75 grams, 38 mm (1 1/2 in.). François de Ricqlès, Paris, Archéologie, 30 September-1 October 1996, no.332. Private collection, London, UK, acquired from the above sale. Accompanied by a copy of a French cultural passport, dated 2 October 1996. This lot is accompanied by an illustrated lot declaration signed by the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr Raffaele D'Amato.Bastet is typically depicted with the head of a lioness or domestic cat. The cat symbolises protection, motherhood, and, later, gentleness and domesticity, qualities associated with Bastet, especially in her later evolution from a fierce lioness to a more benevolent feline goddess. The sistrum she holds is a ritual musical instrument associated with Hathor and other birth goddesses and is linked to joy, music, and divine protection. Bastet was often invoked during music and dance ceremonies, and the sistrum reinforces her role in celebration and protection. Bes was a dwarf god known for guarding households, particularly mothers and children. His image on Bastet’s amulet emphasises her protective role, especially at home and during childbirth.TimeLine Auctions follows a rigorous vetting process to ensure the authenticity and legality of all items, reinforcing our commitment to integrity and responsible trading.
