Report number 5785-2140, dated April 17th 2025. * This collection starts on lot 17 & ends on lot 24. Kashmir SapphiresA brief look into the history of these sapphires can help illustrate their value. It all began with a natural occurrence in 1880 in the Kashmir region on the Indian subcontinent. A landslide atop the Himalayas revealed unusual type of rocks under the top layers of soil. These rocks were almost completely bare except for the occasional protruding blue stones. It took many years for the local people of the regionto realise that the stones were in fact sapphires.Once news of the discovery reached the Maha rajah, he immediately sent a regiment of guards to protect the mine, along with miners to dig out more of the sapphires. The years between 1882 and 1887, marked an extremely productive period for the mine. The mine revealed some very impressive gems which were as large as 5×3 inches.Summers in the region were extremely hot, and the miners had to work in these conditions with little to no rest. By the end of 1887, the resources of the mine had been exhausted. Hungry for more, the Maharajah sought the assistance of the British, who by then had ruled in India for more than a decade. With the assistance of British geologists, a new mine was found in the valley below. However, this was also quickly depleted, and to this day, no other deposits have been found in the region. Kashmir sapphires command a high price because they contain a top-quality specimen. You may come across other blue sapphires, Burmese or Ceylonese, but only those from Kashmir possess a distinctive tint. Experts call it blue velvet. Accompanied by a report from the SSEF laboratory in Switzerland, stating that the sapphire weighing 6.227cts is of Kashmir origin, with no indications of heating. Alan Best (Canadian, 1910-2001) for Wedgwood, 'The Sprinter', the figure in a cream-coloured glaze and mounted on a rectangular base, impressed marks, 13cm highProvenance: Richard Dennis, Wedgwood Exhibition, 1982.Alan Best was born in Chicago, US, in 1910, but his family soon moved to the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada. His early interest in zoology led to a job sculpting animals at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. He lived with his aunt, Muriel Thomson, who was a friend of the Wedgwood family, and she took him to Europe in 1930, where he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. While in London, Best stayed at the home of the eminent zoologist Sir Julian Huxley, who also knew the Wedgwoods. For a short time, he was an assistant to the British sculptor Eric Kennington, and from 1934 to 1935, he was a visiting modeller at Wedgwood. Kennard Wedgwood, the company’s representative in America, encouraged the revived interest in figure-making as he recognised its commercial opportunities during the early 1900s. Best depicted four athletes in contemporary dress, two of which, 'The Sprinter' and 'The Rugby Player', are in the museum’s collection. He also modelled 'The Boxer' and 'The Weight Thrower'. The figures were produced in small numbers with champagne and moonstone glazes, which were fashionable at the time. They were sold through department stores, such as the Army & Navy Co-operative Society and Waring & Gillow in London.Condition ReportChip to the underside, just viewable from the side. Crazing. Insgesamt sehr gut. Detailgetreue, dynamische Komposition in naturnahem Kolorit, die Farben frisch. Art Nouveau. - Watercolour and gouache on wove paper. Signed and dated. Firmly mounted on underlying card, framed under mat and glass. - Provenance: Private collection, Berlin. - Ernst Albert Fischer-Cörlin studied in Berlin at the Prussian Academy of Arts under its director Eduard Daege and Julius Schrader, who was closely associated with the Düsseldorf School. He subsequently worked as a master student of the history painter Anton von Werner. His understanding of art and his painting style were strongly influenced by academia. The late 19th and early 20th centuries were characterised by a growing interest in nature, botany and marine biology, strongly influenced by scientific progress and discoveries. Artists such as Ernst Haeckel with his work Art Forms of Nature combined art and science to show the aesthetic beauty of natural forms. The algae depicted with their flowing lines and the complexity of their structure symbolise the order and harmony in nature, as expressed in Art Nouveau art in particular. - Occasional faint and barely noticeable pale brown stains. Very good overall. Detailed, dynamic composition in naturalistic-like colouring, the colours fresh.

Zoologische Buchillustration, 74. - Catalogue of printed books in the Wellcome Historical Medical Library, Bd. Zoology. - With 1 etched title leaf by G. B. Coriolano as well as title wood-cut vignette and printer's device, over 600, often full-page illustrations, as well as numerous wood-cut initials, head-pieces and vignettes. - Second imprint of the first edition of Aldrovandi's lavishly illustrated natural history, a stiking cabinet of curiosities. - The Bolognese professor of medicine and collector Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) had spent decades compiling a wealth of diverse pictorial material for a planned monumental encyclopaedia of natural history. Like most of his works, the 'Monstrorum historia' with the additional work of the 'Paralipomena' was only published posthumously in 1642 as 12th part of his 13 volume 'Opera omnia', edited by his pupil and successor in the chair, Battista Ambrosini, who also wrote a large part of the text. - The work's particular appeal lies in the abundance of fantastic, often curious, even bizarre woodcuts. They show "tree men" and "bearded men", "monk fish", "elephant men", Siamese twins etc. - 'All in all, a huge casuistry of true and invented human and animal deformities and wonders in magnificent woodcuts'. (Goldschmidt) - Present the unaltered second imprint of the 'Monstrorum historia' printed in 1657, with the magnificent title etching of the first edition by G. B. Coriolano using allegorical motifs on an architecturally structured ground, as well as the 2nd edition of the supplementary 'Paralipomena'. - Binding in parts broken along the joints, small faults to the capitals, corners bumped, covers slightly worn and with small faults to the leather.
