A GEORGE III EMBOSSED PAPER BIRD PICTURE ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM HAYES (1729-1799), LATE 18TH CENTURY Depicting a grey heron (Ardea cinerea) by reeds and river, basso relievo with hand tinting, glass eye, later mounted in a glazed giltwood frame with Cambridge blue and gilt mount, reverse with hand inscribed label "Sacher" and further faintly inscribed in pencil "Centre left hand side" the image approximately 49 x 29cm, the frame 63 x 42.5cm William Hayes was an ornithologist and artist who in 1771 published a volume containing forty hand-coloured engravings "A Natural History of British Birds etc.". In the late 1780s, he was employed at Osterley, recording the exotic birds in the Child's 'menagerie'. This resulted in the publication between 1794 and 1799 of his "Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds with their Descriptions". Drawing on first-hand experience he produced a series of basso relievo bird pictures such as this- much in the manner of his Irish contemporary Samuel Dixon. The present bird picture incorporates a glass eye - a feature favoured by Hayes. Condition Report: well presented in current frame, original picture with some typical small losses and marks and with some shrinkage visible to neck and tail. residual dirt visible under glass and careful cleaning may help improve overall presentation. some mild scuffing and marks to frameCondition Report Disclaimer

Loose sheets in the original cardboard mailer. 32 x 25 inches (81 x 63 cm); 32 superb color collotypes after original watercolor paintings, printed on Fabriano paper. Fine, as issued.This elephant-folio-sized set of ornithological plates, a triumph in their artistry, follows in the tradition of the great illustrated natural history monographs of the past centuries, such as Audubon's masterpiece, The Birds of America. The artist, J. Fenwick Lansdowne, was born in 1937 in Hong Kong to British parents and grew up in British Columbia, Canada. Stricken with polio as a baby, he developed both his love of birds and his talent as a painter from a young age, holding his first museum exhibition in 1952 at the Royal British Columbia Museum when he was just fourteen years old. As one of the world's foremost wildlife painters, often referred to as Audubon's successor, he is the artist who best maintained the tradition of bird painting and publishing into the late 20th century. Similar to Audubon, he would both study his subjects in the field and use museum collections of preserved specimens to paint his highly detailed and accurate watercolors. Archer’ to each title-page, dated 6 February 1868 in volume one. This is likely to have been Francis Archer MRCS (1803-1875) or his son, also Francis (1839-1892), both distinguished naturalists with a special interest in mollusca, and respectively a surgeon and solicitor in their professional lives. Francis senior was a founding member of Belfast Natural History Society, before moving to Liverpool, where he worked as a physician and prison surgeon. His son studied law at Trinity College Cambridge: while there 'he read Darwin's Origin of Species, and was greatly impressed by it, this helping, once again, to stimulate his appetite for natural history. He joined the Liverpool Biological Society and was soon made a member of the council as a result of his great enthusiasm and activity in this field' (F. R. Woodward, ‘The Archer Family of Liverpool and their Natural History Collections', Proceedings of the Birmingham Natural History Society, Vol. XX, No. 2, 1963, p. 4).

Singer library stamp is that of Isidor Singer (1857-1927), an Austrian journalist, statistician and newspaper editor. He came from a wealthy Jewish textile merchant family who had lived in Vienna since 1861. After studying law, mathematics and natural sciences in Vienna and Graz, he received his doctorate in law in Vienna in 1881. Carl Menger assisted with Singer’s Habilitation in 1885, then qualifying as a professor at the University of Vienna and becoming a private lecturer in statistics; and from 1892 onwards an extraordinary professor of statistics. Also in 1885, he published Untersuchungen über die socialen zustände in den fabrikbezirken des nordöstlichen Böhmen; ein beitrag zur methodik socialstatistischer beobachtung (‘Investigations into the Social Conditions of Northeastern Bohemia. Present here are 1, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, 28, 30, 31, 34, 36, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 52, 53, and 54, all numbered in roman numerals. 'The paint is laid on so thickly that it is frequently impossible to see the engraved lines underneath. The already rich colouring is heightened by the added addition of burnished highlights, albumen over glazes and metallic paints to give an overall effect reminiscent of the work of a miniaturist. Surprisingly, these techniques were often combined to produce a very pleasing and delicate effect: the multiple ruses of the colourist triumph over the draftsman's numerous failures. Condition Report: No major chips or cracks, some very small nicks to the handle and small patches of abrasion to the facet corners. There is a small natural or nick to one side of the matrix right by the setting, could be from original stone, not on the detailed section, a couple of light scratches. Slight colour zone band to the handle as typical with citrine. The setting has some rubbing.The matrix has been tested with a refractometer and is a quartz, however due to the foiling to the back we cannot confirm the colour, it could be rock crystal or citrine.  Condition Report Disclaimer
