Looking every inch the 1930s sports car thanks to the efforts of stylist Eric Neale, its rakish bodywork was underpinned by a robust ladder-frame chassis that featured all-round semi-elliptic leaf-sprung suspension, adjustable Andre-Hartford friction dampers and four-wheel hydraulic 10-inch drum brakes. Uprated via an increased sump capacity, standard cooling fan and twin SU carburettors, the newcomer's 972cc OHC four-cylinder engine developed some 31bhp at 4,600rpm and was allied to a close-ratio four-speed manual gearbox. Reputedly capable of 66mph and sustained 50mph cruising, the Nine Sports soon acquired an enviable competition pedigree. Not content with the eight premier awards it won during the Christmas 1932 London to Exeter run, the following season saw the model distinguish itself on the Monte Carlo Rally, London-to-Edinburgh Trial and Alpine Six-Day Trial. However, its crowning achievement came at that year's Le Mans when the mildly tuned version driven by Barnes and Langley became the first un-supercharged sub-1000cc British car to qualify for the Rudge-Whitworth Biennial Cup. Launched in open Four-Seater Tourer guise, the Nine Sports could also be had as a two-door Fixed Head Coupe from 1933 onwards. An elegant design, the enclosed car drove with much the same verve and agility as its less weather-proof sibling.Presenting in a refreshing Pale Blue with Cream paint scheme, this very pretty 1933 Singer Nine Sports Coupe is a rare example, with its ‘helmet wings,’ matching numbers, original registration number and an extensive history file. The factory ‘build card’ records the original dealer as Walboro Cycle and Motor Co. of Saffron Walden and sold on 18th July 1933 to P. M McIntyre of Temple, London. The vendor has shared the car at classic car events during his 4-year ownership and in this time had the logbook ‘body type’ confirmed by DVLA to be a Coupe rather than a Saloon. Before our vendor, it was in the 11 year ownership of a keen VSCC member. Saved from obscurity and believed extensively restored by a Mr Harry Larcombe some 15 years ago. Receipts on file from marque specialist Dave Hardwick, date back to 1989. The Winship family, recorded owners during the 1960s, may well be the people in the period photographs. The exterior is described by the vendor as being in ‘good condition’ and the interior is ‘also very original, although it could be refreshed with a new carpet set’. Continuing, ‘the Singer starts up nicely and once up to temperature, idles well’. There are copies on file of the original build slip, a green logbook, the period and restoration photographs, the V5C document and some period advertisements and reviews from ‘The Autocar’. A Staffordshire pearlware pottery spaniel dog, probably by Enoch Wood works, or Neale & Co, circa 1820, modelled recumbent on a naturalistic base, unmarked, 16.5cm wide CONDITION REPORT:The piece shows the odd firing pit and frit, fine surface crazing to the body of the dog, small glazing faults and small flaked losses to the glaze, and losses to the extruded grass detail of the base, but no obvious chips, cracks or evidence of restoration.

Each with a harebell border and a moulded foot-rim, mark of William Neale Ltd, Birmingham 1934, and a conforming old English pattern mustard spoon and a salt spoon, 137g (a little under 4 1/2 ozs), in a fitted gilt-lined black leatherette case marked inside 'Terry & Co... Manchester'
