Goldney, 1784 (vol I) and Richard Phillips, 1808 (vol XLV).This multi-volume periodical, published between 1784 and 1815, documents agricultural practices, experiments, and innovations across Britain during a time of significant agrarian transformation. Edited and largely authored by Arthur Young; a renowned writer, traveler, and agricultural reformer, who corresponded with both King George III and Geroge Washington; the Annals served as a vital forum for landowners, farmers, and scientists to exchange practical knowledge, theoretical insights, and empirical observations on farming techniques, land management, crop cultivation, and the rural economy. The inclusion of Annals of Agriculture in the Trelissick Library highlights the intellectual and practical interests of its historic owners, the Daniell family, particularly in matters of estate management and agricultural improvement. SEARA NOVA: revista quinzenal de doutrina e crítica.- Nº 1 a nº 1599 (21 de Outubro de 1921 a Janeiro de 1979).- Lisboa: 1921-1979.- 1599 [i. e. 1596] números: il.; 32 cm.- B., A remarkable, followed and almost complete set (only missing issues 304, 307 and 468) of a doctrinal and critical magazine founded by a group of Portuguese intellectuals led by Raúl Proença. From this first series, between October 1980 and December 1984, five more symbolic numbers were published (from 1600 to 1604), just to maintain the title. From the founding group, which emerged from the reformist and Europeanist current of the “Portuguese Renaissance”, we highlight the figures of António Sérgio, Câmara Reis, Ezequiel de Campos, Faria de Vasconcelos, Aquilino Ribeiro, Raúl Brandão, Augusto Casimiro, Jaime Cortesão and many other names from Portuguese culture and politics at the time. In the following years, well-known names from our intellectual elite joined the “seareiros”, such as Castelo Branco Chaves, Álvaro Salema, José Régio, Agostinho da Silva, Joaquim Namorado, Vergílio Ferreira, Carlos de Oliveira and many others. From a plastic point of view, it is worth noting, among many others, the collaborations of Carlos Botelho, António Pedro, Arlindo Vicente, Diogo de Macedo, Vespeira, João Abel Manta, Barata Feio and even Cícero Dias. About this important periodical, see the extensive and well-documented entry in the "Dictionary of Portuguese literary magazines of the 20th century" by Daniel Pires (Volume II, 2nd volume, p. 430 to 535. The Smythsonian scroll is traditionally attributed to Han Gan (715 — 781), the Tang Dynasty painter renowned for his vivid and spirited depiction of horses from the Imperial stables. PLEASE NOTE BIDDING FOR THIS LOT IS SUBJECT TO A DEPOSIT OF £2,000 Throughout the history of the Chinese empire, the vassal states and tribes were obliged to deliver diplomatic gifts to the court on regular basis. Portraits of Periodical Offerings, Zhígòngtú, (職貢圖 / 职贡图) was a popular theme and a way of recording those foreign tributes arriving at the court and ambassadors delivering them. Each depiction was accompanied by a short description of the diplomat and their country of origin. Examples were commissioned since the Liang Dynasty (526 - 539) and copies made for circulation among the court officials. Horses played a crucial role in these tributary ceremonies as an important commodity and a symbol of status. In Tang dynasty they were imported from great distances as gifts to the Chinese emperors: there was a belief that the steeds form the Sogdian valeys in Central Asia (area roughly covering today's Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan) have descended form dragons and have been called Tianma - Heavenly Horses. Some were said to sweat blood, a condition most likely due to a parasitic infection. Both horses and their foreign grooms were in high demand at the subsequent Chinese courts. 31.5cm x 53cm; 35.5cm x 56cm; 35.5cm x 56cm

1934 Harley-Davidson 500cc CAC Speedway Racing MotorcycleRegistration no. not registeredEngine no. 34CAC503•One of the rarest Harley-Davidsons of all time•Only a dozen or so made by Harley-Davidson•One of only nine known to survive•Present family ownership since at least the 1970s•Highly original and unmolestedHaving started in New Zealand and Australia, speedway (or dirt track) racing was increasing in popularity on both sides of the Atlantic in the late 1920s. Fortunately for Harley-Davidson, they already had in their line-up the 21ci (344cc) single-cylinder Model AA 'Peashooter', which proved supremely adaptable to this new form of motorcycle sport. Through the efforts of star works rider Joseph 'Joe' Petrali, Harley-Davidson would go onto sweep the board in Class A '21 cubic inch' races, while the Peashooter was also highly successful in the UK, Australia and New Zealand before it was superseded later in the 1930s by JAP-engined machinery.'Smokey' Joe Petrali was a many-time AMA champion who competed in board track, dirt track and hill climb events, as well as making a successful land speed record attempt in 1937. The son of Italian immigrants, Petrali was born in 1904 and first signed for Harley-Davidson in 1921, riding the Milwaukee big twins on the board tracks. When H-D made one of their periodical withdrawals from racing, Petrali moved in 1925 to Excelsior where he assisted Chief Engineer Arthur Constantine in developing a new 21ci racer. When the Excelsior factory closed n 1931, Joe made his way back to Harley-Davidson. With interest in professional flat track racing beginning to fade, Harley-Davidson sought to revive the sport by developing a new Peashooter-type machine for the 30.5ci (500cc) class, the engine of which had clearly been inspired by that of the British JAP. In his seminal work, Harley-Davidson – The Milwaukee Marvel, Harry V Sucher has this to say about the project: '...its development was largely the work of Joe Petrali, who designed and tested the new engine largely in his own time. He was encouraged in the effort by President Walter Davidson, who now hoped for a more potent machine to compete with the current crop of JAPs and Rudge Specials which had largely dominated flat track competition.'H-D's racing department went on to build around a dozen of these CAC dirt track machines. Unfortunately, the design was not without its flaws and early results were discouraging, though you would never have guessed from Harley's advertising: 'The short track racers we are offering are the result of much study and actual trial by our racing department. Extensive tests were conducted on the West Coast on actual tracks with outstanding short track racing stars and in competition with the best of the foreign machines. Our experimental machines came through every test with flying colors. Improvements incorporated as a result of these trials will make these new racing models even better in power and performance.'To Petrali's chagrin, Walter Davidson cancelled the project before the CAC could reach production, ostensibly on grounds of its cost, and refused to pay Joe his promised $1,000 bonus. Today, the almost mythical CAC is one of the rarest Harley-Davidsons of all time, with only nine known survivors. An amazing discovery and an extraordinary survivor, this Harley-Davidson CAC has been in a private collection since at least the 1970s. The vendor's father was a collector of fine motor vehicles but, unfortunately, we do not know how he acquired the Harley-Davidson. The knee hook has its original hessian fabric and the Lycette saddle appears to have been on the CAC since the early part of its life, while the worn tyres testify to the machine having been used. A possibly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the dedicated Harley-Davidson collector.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Please see the Auction Information and Guide for Buyers at the top of the main sale page, for bidders' obligations. His father was a Liberal Politician and founder of the publisher George Newnes Ltd., his periodicals Tit-bits and The Strand Magazine are considered forerunners of Modern Popular journalism. The younger Newnes attended Clare College, Cambridge and graduated with an M.A. and L.L.B. in 1897.He joined his father's publisher that same year and worked there for many years, also following him into politics to become the Liberal M.P. for Bassetlaw, North Nottinghamshire in 1906. He managed to take the seat from the Conservatives however lost it again in the next election in January 1910. The same year his father died and Newnes inherited the baronetcy as well as the publishing business.Newnes married Emmeline de Rutzen, the daughter of Sir Albert de Rutzen, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at Bow Street, in 1913. After the outbreak of the Great War the next year he decided to join up, being commissioned Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in 1915. He did not remain in that service however, transferring to the Army and being advanced Captain with the 12th Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Notably he did not see any service entitling him to Campaign medals, as such this badge is his only named entitlement. After the war Newnes became Director of a number of companies in the publishing trade, as well as Chairman of Country Life Ltd. He was the Director of his father's publication, The Westminster Gazette, a Liberal newspaper which Prime Minister Gladstone allowed to be decorated with the Party's green colours, leading to it being dubbed 'Pea-Green Incorruptible'.Outside of the political and publishing worlds, Newnes was deeply involved in matters of public health. He joined the Voluntary Hospitals Committee for London and was a member of the management committees of the Royal Free Hospital and its Medical School. He also became Chairman of the Post-Graduate Institute of Dental Surgery and the Eastern Dental Hospital, the latter being the reason for his award of the C.B.E. Furthermore, he was President of the Printers Pension Corporation and Vice President of the Periodical Proprietors Association.Newnes later died in Western Australia on 10 July 1955; sold together with copied research including a biography of Sir George Newnes (the recipient's father).…

[HAMILTON, ALEXANDER]The Speeches at Full Length of Mr. Van Ness, Mr. Caines, the Attorney-General, Mr. Harrison, and General Hamilton, in the Great Cause of the People, Against Harry Croswell, on an Indictment for a Libel on Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States. New York: G. & R. Waite, 1804. First edition. Old cloth. 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches (20.5 x 12.5 mm); 77, [1] pp. Cloth worn, lacking endpapers, stamps (accession and withdrawal) of Yale University Library on title, intermittent foxing and toning and an occasional stain, fore- and lower edge untrimmed. Bookplate of Yale University Library (also with withdrawal stamps). An important case pertaining to Freedom of the Press. In response to attacks on his administration by Federalist newspapers, Thomas Jefferson attempted to prosecute them for criminal libel under the Sedition Act. The political journalist Harry Croswell was indicted for his periodical, The Wasp, which had accused Jefferson of hiring pamphleteer James Callender to write articles charging Washington and Adams with various crimes—and referring to them as a "hoary-headed incendiary" and a "traitor, robber, and perjurer," respectively. Croswell was convicted at trial, as the court refused to allow him to prove the truth of what he had printed or intended, ruling that the truth was not a defense.Croswell had an eminent legal defense team that included William W. Van Ness and Alexander Hamilton. The latter only argued on his behalf in appeal. In one of Hamilton's finest speeches, a six-hour appellate argument, he argued that the freedom of the press consists in publishing the truth, regardless of how it reflects on its subjects. He further argued for a rejection of libel based on English common law principles, which had been the basis for the court's original ruling. Despite all this, Croswell was convicted, though never sentenced. The following year New York overturned the English libel laws based on Hamilton's argument.A landmark case in the history of the First Amendment.
