Theodor Rombouts, 1597 – 1637KARTENSPIELER AM TISCH MIT EINEM KIEBITZÖl auf Leinwand. Doubliert.145 x 200 cm.Beigegeben eine Expertise von Gianni Papi, Florenz, 11. April 2022, in Kopie.Wie nicht wenige Werke des Malers zeigt sich auch dieses in betontem Großformat. In abgedunkeltem Raum sitzen sich zwei Kartenspieler an einem Tisch gegenüber, zwei weitere Figuren, eine alte Wirtin und ein Jüngling vor seinem Glas und Teller sind rechts am Tischende zu sehen. Links dagegen beugt sich ein grauhaariger Alter weit vor, um in die Karten seines Tischnachbarn zu blicken. Die Figuren sind schlaglichtartig von links beleuchtet, aus einer Lichtquelle, die im Bild nicht zu sehen ist. Die Hell-Dunkel-Malerei des Caravaggismus lässt die Figuren umso plastischer erscheinen. Die Hauptfigur, ein Mann im noblen Landsknechtskostüm mit breitrandigem Hut und roter Feder und umgegürteter Stichwaffe im Halfter, sitzt einzig an der Frontseite des Tisches. Er hält seine Karten in der Linken und ist dabei eine rote Karte zu ziehen. Sein Gegenüber zeigt sich noch unentschlossen. Die Darstellung lässt mehrere Deutungsmöglichkeiten des Spielgeschehens offen. Klar jedoch scheint, dass der Alte als Kibietz fungiert. Möglicherweise ist die Szene rechts dahingegen zu deuten, dass hier der Knappe des Landsknechts von der alten Wirtin ermahnt wird, von der Zusammenarbeit mit dem Betrüger abzulassen, was dieser nur mit einem Lächeln kommentiert.Papi sieht in dem vorliegenden Werk eine zweite eigenhändige Arbeit Theodor Rombouts, das sich im Museo di Belle Arti, Antwerpen, befindet. Bildaufbau und die Inszenierung der Darstellung stehen den Werken Caravaggios sehr nahe. So gilt Rombouts als der primäre Caravaggist dieser flämischen Stilrichtung. Zunächst studierte er unter anderem bei Abraham Janssens, vielleicht auch bei Nicolas Régnier in Antwerpen, bevor er sich 1616 nach Rom begab, um dort fast 10 Jahre zu bleiben. Es wird auch allgemein angenommen, dass er anlässlich eines Aufenthaltes in Florenz für Cosimo II de Medici arbeitete und damit auch mit Bartolomeo Manfredi in nahen Kontakt kam. 1625 wurde er Meister der Lukasgilde in Antwerpen.Auch in seinem bekannten Werk „Verleugnung Petri“ (Liechtenstein Museum) ist das Kartenspiel ein Begleitthema. Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, "Maria", großer signierter Holzschnitt von 1918, in eleganter GalerierahmungKarl Schmidt-Rottluff, 1884 Rottluff - 1976 Berlin; eigentlich Karl Schmidt, bedeutender deutscher Maler, Grafiker und Plastiker. Er gilt als ein Klassiker der Moderne und als einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des Expressionismus, hier: Frauenkopf "Maria", großer Holzschnitt, Blatt 7 der Folge "Neun Holzschnitte", Kurt Wolff/ München 1918, auf chamoisfarbenem Bütten von Van Gelderen mit Wasserzeichen, 50 x 39,5 cm (Gesamt: 65 x 50,5 cm), eines von 75 Exemplaren, r. u. signiert, WVZ Schapire H 216 Die Mappe "Schmidt - Rottluff 9 Holzschnitte" erschien im letzten Kriegsjahr 1918 im Verlag von Kurt Wolff in München in einer Auflage von 75 Exemplaren. Auf das Wesentliche reduziert sprechen die neun Holzschnitte durch ihre Symbolik: Schwarz und Weiß, Christus und sein Wort oder Krieg mit allen seinen Folgen. Im Titelblatt schriftlich aufgeführt und eingerahmt vom »Kuss in Liebe« und dem »Jünger« erscheinen folgende Darstellungen: »Kristus«, »Gang nach Emmaus«, »Kristus flucht dem Feigenbaum«, »Petri Fischzug«, »Kristus und die Ehebrecherin«, »Maria« sowie »Kristus und Judas«.

(likely all ink stamps excised), lacking [cross]1-6 (Preface) following title with a 2ff. Life of Strabo and blank f inserted instead before *1, most maps with ink stamp to woodcut versos covered with later paper laid-down (i.e. not affecting woodcut image), some browning, modern calf stamped in blind, [not in Adams; VD16 S 9348], folio, Basel, Heinrich Petri, 1571 [sold not subject to return].*** This Latin only edition scarcer than the Latin-Greek text of the same work.

[graece], text in Greek, woodcut initials, Paris, Guillaume Morel, 1560, and Liturgiae sive Missae Sanctorum Patrum... text in Latin, some faint damp-stains towards end, Paris, Guillaume Morel, 1560, together 3 works in 1, ?19th century navy half morocco, spine gilt, chipped in places, folio. *** Provenance: the first work in this trio, at least, came originally from the library of the French oratorian Seminary of Saint Magloire in Paris, established 1618 [exlibris ink inscriptoin to title head]. Additionally, this it seems to have been the bequest of François de La Poterie (1624-1704), former librarian of Cardinal Jules Mazarin, who is known to have generously donated to the seminary library [ink inscription to title head]. Whether the three works were already bound together at the time of this bequest, or at some later point, it is impossible to say.
