MACCLESFIELD / CHESHIRE INTEREST; an extensive archive of early to mid 19th century documents relating to George Pearson, Mayor and silk manufacturer of Macclesfield who died in 1824. His father arranged for John Wesley to preach in Macclesfield and is believed responsible for the Wesley Chapel in Sunderland Street. The archive consists of several hundred tradesmen’s and shopkeeper's accounts for various services and supplies including gardening, plants, household repairs, clothes, shoes, household goods, carriage repairs, shoeing horses, and blacksmithing fees etc. An interesting disclosure in the archive reveals that George Pearson of Mount Pleasant had an affair with his servant, Jane Davies, which resulted with ‘her in child’. She leaves and moves to Manchester and there are receipts supporting her and the child following the birth. A bundle of schooling accounts, receipts for Miss Charlotte Pearson 1821-1834. A large bundle of notebooks. Rent for Pearson’s house, cash accounts and bank books with Brocklehurst & Co, property accounts book, will documents, deeds to pew in Old Church 1771-1822, valuations of Pearson’s silk mills, conveyancing documents, and much more, contained in a deed box.
