1878 (end Aug) 1c black provisional with horiz bar through "OFFICIAL" (opt on SG O1, perf 10), HORIZONTAL PAIR, ERROR IMPERFORATE BETWEEN, lightly used with cds and small pen crosses. Left stamp with small thin at foot, not affecting fine appearance and of little significance as this is the unique example that is the basis of the Part I listing. A highly important and most desirable error. Ex Dupont (Feldman 27 June 2014, lot 60113, when incorrectly offered as SG O1a - realised EUR 24,000+), with BPA cert (2014) as "SG 138var" (prior to the current listing). [N.B. The Royal Philatelic Collection includes a similar pair with "OFFICIAL" not obliterated (= SG O1a), indicating that the original error sheet must have been issued in part for official use as intended, while the balance remained available for conversion back to ordinary postal use in 1878 - an extraordinary occurrence !].
