λ‡ PETER ROSE PULHAM (BRITISH 1910-1956) TROMPE L'OEIL À CLEF Oil on panel Signed with initials and dated 1939-1945 (to centre of right edge) 51 x 76cm (20 x 29¾ in.) Peter Rose Pulham worked initially as a photographer, producing work for Harper's Bazaar in the early 1930s before moving to Paris. He famously photographed Picasso in his studio on the Rue des Grands Augustins in 1936 but became increasingly interested in French surrealism and began painting in the late 1930s, returning to London just before the outbreak of World War II. In 1941, a German bomb hit his studio on Old Church Street in Chelsea, destroying many of his paintings. His later work is heavily influenced by Francis Bacon, with whom he became close friends. Condition Report: There is a small fleck of paint loss to the lower right quadrant, just above the feather. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the left hand and lower edges. Otherwise, the work appears to be in good condition.Condition Report Disclaimer

18th Century School “The Massacre of the Innocents”, (copy of original by Nicolas Poussin), O.O.C., c.1850, approx. 64cms x 76cms (25” x 30”). (1) Dating probably from the mid-nineteenth century, this copy of Nicholas Poussin’s The Massacre of the Innocents is an almost exact replica of the original, conveying all of the barbarism and tragedy of the scene, taken from the Gospel of St. Matthew. The original was commissioned in the 1620’s by the Roman banker Vincenzo Giustiniani. A leading patron of the arts, Giustiniani had assembled one of the finest collections in Italy and was also a patron of Caravaggio. The commission was a prestigious one, particularly for such a young artist. Poussin rose to the challenge, seeking to outdo Guido Reni’s famous painting of the same subject, painted in 1611 for the Basilica San Domenico in Bologna. He devised a dramatic composition resembling a theatre stage, with the main protagonists in the foreground, and subsidiary characters in the background. The architectural setting of a Greek temple adds to the intensity of the work. The action is concentrated on three main figures, the soldier who places his foot on the infant, the distraught mother, and the dying child. As well as Guido Reni, the influence of Caravaggio is evident, particularly in the use of stark lighting to emphasis the tragedy of the scene. The Massacre of the Innocents was displayed at the Palazzo Giustiniani and quickly became one of the most celebrated works of art in Rome. Over the centuries, it has continued to inspire artists, notably Picasso, who in the 1920’s and 30’s based several paintings on Poussin’s work, while Francis Bacon described the mother’s cry of anguish as ‘one of the best ever painted’. The original is now in the Musée Condé de Chantilly, in France. Dr. Peter Murray 2025

PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A wonderful, visually appealing A.L.S., Picasso, one page, slim folio (approximately 10.5 x 56.5 cm), Mas Notre-Dame-de-Vie, Mougins, Alpes Maritimes, 18th December 1963, to Max [Pellequer] (´Mon cher Max´), in French. Writing in bold purple ink on an unusual sheet of fine watermarked folding stationery, Picasso states, in full, ´Voici le chèque (n'est plus présent) que vous me demandez. Le courrier part de suite. Amitiés de nous deux. Je vous embrasse´ (Translation: ´Here is the cheque (no longer present) you asked me for. The post is going out right away. Best wishes from both of us. I kiss you´). As well as adding a paraph beneath his signature, Picasso has filled the base of the page with a simple purple spiralling squiggle, transforming the letter into a piece of artwork in its own right. About EXMax Pellequer (1903-1973) French banker and art collector who would become Picasso´s private banker, financial adviser and close friend. Pellequer assembled an important collection of artworks in the 1920s and 1930s which included a number of significant early pieces by Picasso, as well as works by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and others. Almost two hundred letters from Pellequer to Picasso are preserved in the Musee National Picasso in Paris. In 1961, Picasso, who had discovered Mougins in 1936, bought Mas Notre-Dame-de-Vie from the Guinness family as a wedding present for his future wife Jacqueline. Referred to by Picasso as the ´house of my dreams´, the large villa (set in three hectares and with views over the Bay of Cannes) would be the artist´s final residence. For Picasso, everything that passed through his hands was immediately transformed into a work of art, and the present letter is no exception.
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A good vintage signed 4 x 6 photograph of the artist stood outdoors in a half-length pose, at a small public event. Picasso, with one arm raised as he waves to onlookers, is seen wearing a short-sleeved shirt with floral motifs, open over his bare torso. To his side appears his seven-year old son, Claude, and in the immediate background a number of other men and women can be seen enjoying the festivities. At the head of the image several rows of bunting can be seen and, on the platform before the artist, a model figure of an Andalusian woman in a white polka-dot dress with a shawl draped over her shoulders is positioned. Photograph by Paul-Louis of Studio-Starlet in Nice and bearing their credit stamp to the verso, along with the pencil date of 1954. Signed (´Picasso´) by the artist in blue ink with his name alone to the lower border. VGProvenance: The present signed photograph was acquired by our vendor directly from Pierre Bertrand, a specialist supplier of paper for printmaking and engravings, and friend of Picasso.
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A good A.L.S., Picasso, one page, 4to, Vallauris (Cote d´Azur), 22nd November 1951, to Max [Pellequer] (´Mon cher Max´), in French. Picasso writes to make a request of his friend, ´Pour une exposition que m´intéresse beaucoup je voudrais que vous prétiez le tableau de la femme à la taie dans l´oeil de votre collection. Faites mois ce plaisir. Monsieur Aparicio est chargé de organiser cette exposition (vous pouvez à Sabartes qui est au courant)´ (Translation: ´For an exhibition that interests me greatly, I would like you to lend me the painting of la femme à la taie from your collection. Please do me this favour. Mr Aparicio is in charge of organising this exhibition (you can ask Sabartes, who is aware of this)´), and continues to add that he does not know when he will go to Paris, remarking ´Je suis fou de travail et je n´ose pas laisser trop de choses commencées sans a peu-près les terminer´ (Translation: ´I am swamped with work and don't dare leave too many things half done without finishing them´). A letter of good content for its reference to Picasso´s famous portrait La Celéstine. A few very light, extremely minor creases, VGMax Pellequer (1903-1973) French banker and art collector who would become Picasso´s private banker, financial adviser and close friend. Pellequer assembled an important collection of artworks in the 1920s and 1930s which included a number of significant early pieces by Picasso, as well as works by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and others. Almost two hundred letters from Pellequer to Picasso are preserved in the Musee National Picasso in Paris.Jaime Sabartes (1881-1968) Spanish artist, poet and writer, a close friend of Pablo Picasso who would later become his secretary and administrator.La Celéstine (la femme à la taie) was created by Picasso in 1904, before his definitive departure from Barcelona to Paris, and marks the end of the artist´s famous blue period. The portrait is of Carlotta Valdivia, a Barcelona brothel owner, who becomes the enigmatic image of La Celestina, a matchmaker who, in Fernando de Rojas's eponymous work, is paid to foster Calixte's passion for Melibea. Also known as The Tragicomedy of Calixte and Melibea, this sixteen-act work recounts the misadventures of various characters who all meet a tragic end, with death triumphing over love corrupted by money. Once owned by Max Pellequer, the painting is now housed in the Musée Picasso in Paris.
ROQUE JACQUELINE: (1926-1986) French model, muse and the second wife of Pablo Picasso from 1961. A moving A.L.S., Jacqueline Picasso, one page, small 8vo, n.p. (Vauvenargues, Côte d´Azur), n.d. (April 1973), to Jean Boissieu, in French. Picasso´s widow writes, in full, ´Nous sommes quittes...L´échange de larmes a eu lieu. Vous à Mougins et moi à Vauvenargues en vous écoutant. En amitié´ (Translation: ´We are even... The exchange of tears has taken place. You in Mougins and me in Vauvenargues, listening to you. With friendship´). The letter is written on a piece of light card, possibly neatly torn from a larger sheet by Jacqueline herself, and with a slightly uneven lower edge. VGJean Boissieu (1922-2009) French journalist, writer, art collector and, with his wife Gisèle, the co.founder of the Festival d´Avignon. Boissieu was a friend of many artists, including Picasso, and was the author of an article published in Le Provençal describing Picasso's funeral cortege leaving Notre-Dame de Vie, the house in Mougîns where the painter died.Agence-France-Presse dispatches, and especially those for the day of the funeral, made it possible to follow events live from Vauvenargues, and Boissieu would have relayed information to pass on to Paris, no doubt from a telephone booth or village café. As for Jacqueline, she was waiting in Vauvenargues for the painter's body to be laid to rest in the château grounds in a private ceremony. Given the content of the letter, it seems highly probable that it was written on the day of Picasso´s funeral, 11th April 1973. Picasso died, at the age of 91, on 8th April 1973 at his Mas Notre-Dame-de-Vie villa in Mougins, near Cannes. On the day of the artist´s funeral his coffin was taken from Mougins to the Château of Vauvenargues, a property he had acquired in 1958 and occupied with Jacqueline between 1959 and 1961. Jacqueline Picasso never recovered from the death of her husband. She had been frequenting Picasso's grave on the eighth of every month and said that he wanted her to join him. She shot herself, with Picasso’s gun, on 15th October 1986, at Mougins and was subsequently interred alongside her husband in the Château of Vauvenargues
[SURREALISM]: A printed small 8vo exhibition catalogue (unsigned) for the Exposition Surréaliste at the Pierre Colle Gallery, Rue Cambacérès, Paris, 7th - 18th June (1933). The catalogue lists around seventy works that will be exhibited, arranged alphabetically by artist, including Jean Arp (three works), André Breton (´Objet´), Salvador Dali (one of the largest contributors with eight pieces including Harpe invisible, Chaise atmosphérique, Oeufs sur le plat atmosphériques, and Buste de femme rétrospectif etc.), Marcel Duchamp (´Pharmacie´), Paul Eluard (´Objet basé sur la perversion des oreilles´), Marie-Berthe Ernst (portraits of Max Ernst and André Breton), Max Ernst (seven pieces including Vol nupital, Un libertin attaqué d´une maladie mortelle..., Une lettre, and Objet sans prétention etc.), Alberto Giacometti (six pieces including Mannequin and Sucre minéral etc.), Georges Hugnet (´Le poil de la bête´), Valentine Hugo (seven pieces including Portrait d´Achim d´Arnim and La religieuse portugaise etc.), Rene Magritte (two pieces, both tables), Joan Miro (´Objets´), Man Ray (six pieces including Saucisse-artifice, Oeil-métronome, Portrait manqué etc.), Yves Tanguy (five pieces including Un risque dans chaque main, L´obsession de la prophétie, and L´opinion des oiseaux etc.) and others. Pablo Picasso was also due to exhibit three sculptures, however his name and entries have been neatly covered with a small piece of contemporary paper, evidently having withdrawn the artworks from the exhibition. Bound in the original brown paper wrappers with black printed title to the cover. About EXPierre Colle (1909-1948) French art dealer, painter and poet, a close friend of Max Jacob. Colle opened his second gallery on Rue Cambacérès where he organised notable exhibtions and was one of the first gallery owners to show the works of Salvador Dali.
ROQUE JACQUELINE: (1926-1986) French model, muse and the second wife of Pablo Picasso from 1961. A.L.S., Jacqueline, to the verso of a colour postcard (the recto featuring an image of Picasso´s portrait La Celéstine), n.p., n.d., to Max [Pellequer], in French. Roque writes, ´Picasso me dit qu´il retrouve pas la derniere lettre de M. Vaidis, voilà´ (Translation: ´Picasso tells me he can't find Mr. Vaidis' last letter. Here it is´) and concludes by sending her warm regards. A few heavy creases to the left and right edges, only very slightly affecting the text and signature, GMax Pellequer (1903-1973) French banker and art collector who would become Picasso´s private banker, financial adviser and close friend. Pellequer assembled an important collection of artworks in the 1920s and 1930s which included a number of significant early pieces by Picasso (including La Celéstine), as well as works by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and others. Almost two hundred letters from Pellequer to Picasso are preserved in the Musee National Picasso in Paris.
MATISSE HENRI: (1869-1954) French artist. A very interesting content A.Ns.S., `Henri Matisse´, one page, folio, n.p., 2nd August 1945, in French. Matisse responds to a researcher's questionnaire entitled "Enquete Mondiale" ('World Enquiry') to the heading, with the researcher's manuscript interesting questions beneath, '1. Vos debuts artistiques furent-il heureux ou difficiles? 2. (Translation: '1. Were your artistic debuts happy or difficult? 2. Did the means of existence (a second job or a personal fortune) allow you to make a name for yourself in the Painting Art, or do you only live from your art? 3. What work (or what painting) was the one that made you being known? Which one do you consider your masterpiece?). Matisse provides his brief answers beneath, indicating which one is in his opinion the painting that made him well-known, saying in full, '1º Difficiles. - 2º Je n´ai fait que de la Peinture. - 3º Le Bonheur de Vivre.Musée fondation Barbes Merion - Philadelphie. - 4º Je laisse ça au jugement des autres.´ (Translation: "1st Difficult. - 2nd I only did Painting. - 3rd The Joy of Life. Barbes Merion Foundation Museum - Philadelphia. - 4th I leave that to the judgment of others.") Very small minor age tone to the bottom edge, otherwise VGLe Bonheur de Vivre ("The Joy of Life") is a 1906 painting by Henri Matisse. Along with Picasso´s Les Demoiselles d´Avignon, Le Bonheur de Vivre is regarded as one of the pillars of early Modernism. The monumental canvas was first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris in 1906, where its cadmium colors and spatial distortions caused a public expression of protest and outrage.
MIRO JOAN: (1893-1983) Spanish painter. A United States of America Federal Reserve One Dollar banknote featuring an original, bold purple crayon illustration by Miro (unsigned) to the recto, the abstract drawing open to interpretation, but possibly a representation of the Scales of Justice, imaginatively placed by Miro over the central portrait of George Washington. Accompanied by the original air mail envelope hand addressed by Miro to Madame Henriette Gomès at Rue du Cirque, Paris, signed (´Miro´) by the artist to the upper left corner and post marked at Paris, 10th July 1958. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VGHenriette Gomès (d.1986) was a French art gallery owner who had been a model for Jules Pascin in the 1920s. Gomès first met Miro in 1934 and the two remained lifelong friends, and Gomès also collected several of Miro´s object-sculptures. The Galerie Henriette Gomès at Rue du Cirque exhibited works by Picasso, Balthus, Calder, Giacometti and Man Ray amongst others.
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A.L.S., Picasso, to the verso of an 8vo printed invitation card to the 4th exhibition of works by candidates for the Paul Guillaume Prize at Bernheim Jeune from 1st - 8th December 1938, n.p., n.d. (December 1938?), to [Max] Pellequer, (´Mon cher ami´), attractively written in bold blue crayon, in French. Picasso writes, in full, ´Impossible d´aller vous voir ce matin. Vous pouvez donner la boite au porteur - et merci. Bien à vous et à cette après-midi ou demain matin´ (Translation: ´I won't be able to come and see you this morning. You can give the box to the delivery person - and thank you. Best wishes for this afternoon or tomorrow morning´). VGMax Pellequer (1903-1973) French banker and art collector who would become Picasso´s private banker, financial adviser and close friend.
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A superb original design for a book cover created by Picasso, unsigned, executed in Indian ink and white and ochre pastels, one page, 4to (approximately 21 x 27 cm), n.p. (Cannes, Alpes-Maritimes), n.d., April 1959. Picasso´s striking design is his prototype for the front cover of one of Gallimard´s famous Série noire editions and features the standard black background, Picasso adding his playful title A quatre pattes le cul de jatte (´On all fours, legless´) to the centre, beneath which appear the celebrated yellow dot and nrf logo. In his layout Picasso also remains faithful to Gallimard´s classic design, including the imaginary editor and author´s (Richard) name, however they are subverted by Picasso´s dancing graphics and freedom of line, and the surname of the author is lost in illegible writing reminiscent of hypergraphics. The design is gently laid down at the head to the centre of a larger (approximately 33 x 78 cm) piece of card, evidently for display and framing purposes. The backing card also features the original envelope (neatly split into two halves) which was decoratively hand addressed by Picasso in a variety of coloured inks, the recto appearing above the book cover design and addressed to ´Marcel Duhamel/ chez Gallimard/ nrf/ 5 R. Sebastien Bottin/ Paris - 7e Arrdt´, the verso of the envelope appearing beneath the design, ´envoi PICASSO - Cannes/ A.M.´ to which the artist has also added an orange circle to the centre, representing a seal. A marvellous piece of original artwork by Picasso, linking the legendary Spanish artist with the major French publishing house of Gallimard; two giants of European culture. VGMarcel Duhamel (1900-1977) French actor and screenwriter who was the founder of the Série noire publishing imprint in 1945.It was probably through Jacques Prévert (1900-1977), the French poet and screenwriter, that his lifelong friend Duhamel met Picasso (a photograph exists of the three men in enjoying each others company in Cannes in 1959). During his frequent stays on the French Riviera Marcel Duhamel became increasingly close to Picasso, who gave him a sketchbook for his birthday, which Duhamel published in 1964 under the title Le Picasso de poche. In his memoir, Raconte pas ta vie (1972), Duhamel recalls the present book cover design, ´Little by little, the house filled up with souvenirs of this kind, autographed books, bouquets of flowers, and even a title for the Série noire, painted on a black background: A quatre pattes le cul-de.jatte. I would love to be able to use it, because it says it all. But go and find a subject that fits it!´The playful title devised by Picasso was in keeping with those imagined by Duhamel for the books in the Série noire collection, most of which had no connection whatsoever with the originals. For example, Raymond Chandler´s The Little Sister appeared under the title Fais pas ta rosière! (´Don´t be a rose!´) and his masterpiece The Long Goodbye was given the title Sur un air de navaja (´To the tune of a navaja´). With its absurb and provocative humour, A quatre pattes le cul-de-jatte would have been a jewel in the Série noire collection and testifies to Picasso´s inventive genius in all areas.Anglo-American literature forms the bulk of the Série noire collection, which celebrated its 80th anniversary this year. It has released a collection of crime fiction of the hardboiled detective thrillers variety published by its parent company Gallimard (formerly Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française - nrf) and its authors have included Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Ed McBain, Peter Cheyney and others. The Série noire name became a generic term for works of detective fiction, and is considered to have inspired the French critic Nino Frank to coin the phrase Film noir in 1946, describing Hollywood crime dramas. As for the covers used in the Série Noire, they evolved from the simplicity conditioned by the technical means of the 1940s to the current covers where photographic and digital composition media have unfortunately replaced the simplicity of the early period.
PICASSO PABLO: (1881-1973) Spanish painter, a co-founder of the Cubist movement. A wonderful illustrated A.L.S., Picasso, one page, oblong 4to, La Californie, Cannes, Alpes-Maritimes, 22nd October 1959, to Max [Pellequer] (´Mon cher Max´), in French. Picasso forwards a cheque (no longer present) for the Union de recouvrement de Sécourité Sociale in Nice, and continues ´M.J'ai demandé à Monsieur Bach à Vauvenargues les renseignements que vous me demandez.Je vais les recevoir de un instant à l'autre´ (Translation: ´I have asked Mr Bach in Vauvenargues for the information you requested. I should receive it any moment now´), further sending his best wishes to Pellequer´s wife, and concluding with a curious phrase, ´Court mon aiguille dans la laine......´ (Translation: ´Run my needle through the wool......´). To the upper left corner of the page Picasso has added a beautiful and vibrant original illustration of the brightly shining sun, drawn in blue, orange, green, yellow and black crayons; the orange and blue rays of the sun formed around two circles, one green and one yellow, and with a black dot in the centre. A magnificent and rare illustrated letter by Picasso. A couple of very light, extremely minor creases, and with a small, neat tear to the lower edge, close to, but not touching the paraph of Picasso´s signature. VGMax Pellequer (1903-1973) French banker and art collector who would become Picasso´s private banker, financial adviser and close friend. Pellequer assembled an important collection of artworks in the 1920s and 1930s which included a number of significant early pieces by Picasso, as well as works by Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas, Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro and others.
