1930 Rolls-Royce 20/25hp Doctor’s Coupé with coachwork by Hooper Registration Number: RX 6000 Chassis Number: GDP 28 Engine Number: I7W In wonderful condition throughout and with the most impressive of history files, this grand Rolls-Royce is presented in blue over black coachwork with a fine red coach line. The car features a folding pram hood and dickey seat, Lucas lighting, wheel discs, rear-mounted spare wheel carrier and fishtail exhaust. As it has been used as regular transport over the years, indicators and seat belts have been added for safety. Inside, the car is extremely comfortable and well appointed, with blue-grey leather trim and beautiful wooden dash and door cappings, with a Paddon Bros. Ltd. supplier's plate to the dash. The engine compartment is extremely nicely presented and to very original specification, and has a fabulous Boa Constrictor bulb horn present. First owned by the 7th Marquess of Downshire until after the Second World War, the car was purchased by the current owner’s parents in 1947. They used it as their only car until they could no longer fit in their three children (one of whom was the present owner!), so with great regret they sold it in 1955 and bought a Rolls-Royce saloon instead. In 1984, the car came into the possession of David Pollock, a surgeon from Shrewsbury. By this time it was in very poor condition and Mr Pollock performed an amazing restoration job over six years, winning a number of trophies and prizes as a result. In 2003, the present owner was invited as a guest to the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts' Club National Rally at Towcester. Incredibly, he spied the well-remembered registration number 'RX 6000' and introduced himself to the owner. The long and short of it was that he purchased his father's old car and was able to reacquaint himself with it after nearly fifty years! Running and driving very well and in regular use, the Rolls-Royce comes with an incredible history file spanning nearly a century of documentation. This includes copies of the original build sheets, a quantity of MoTs over the last six decades and details of its ownership history, extensive maintenance and various restorations over the years. It is, of course, MoT-exempt and benefits from free 'Historic' road fund licence. In the owner’s words, 'it is a wonderful motor-car which has fully repaid all the love and care it has received over the past twenty years'.

* ALAN DAVIE CBE RA HRSA RWA (SCOTTISH 1920 - 2014), ASCENT TO A HIGHER PLANE (G 2188) mixed media on paper, signed, titled and dated '93mounted, framed and under glassimage size 56cm x 66cm, overall size 76cm x 86cm Note: Scottish painter, graphic artist, poet, musician, silversmith, and jeweller, born at Grangemouth, Stirlingshire, son of a painter and etcher. Davie studied at Edinburgh College of Art, 1937–40, and after serving in the Royal Artillery, 1941–6, had his first one-man show at Grant's Bookshop, Edinburgh, in 1946. He then briefly worked as a professional jazz musician (he plays several instruments) before spending almost a year (1948–9) travelling in Europe. This gave him the chance to see works by Jackson *Pollock and other American painters in Peggy *Guggenheim's gallery in Venice, and he was one of the first British painters to be affected by *Abstract Expressionism. Other influences on his eclectic but extremely personal style are African sculpture and Zen Buddhism. His work is full of images suggestive of magic or mythology (some based on ancient forms, some of his own invention) and he uses these as themes around which—like a jazz musician—he spontaneously develops variations in exuberant colour and brushwork: ‘Although every work of mine must inevitably bear the stamp of my own personality, I feel that each one must, to be satisfactory, be a new revelation of something hitherto unknown to me, and I consider this evocation of the unknown to be the true function of any art.’ After his return to Britain in 1949, Davie settled in London, where he worked until 1953 as a jeweller. By the mid-1950s, however, he was gaining a considerable reputation as a painter (he has had regular one-man exhibitions at *Gimpel Fils Gallery since 1950), and in the 1960s this became international. His many awards have included the prize for the best foreign painter at the São Paulo *Bienal of 1963 and first prize at the International Graphics Exhibition, Cracow, in 1966. Retrospectives were held at the Barbican Art Gallery, London (1993), and Tate St Ives (2003). Since 1971 he has spent much of his time on the island of St Lucia and this has introduced Caribbean influences into his imagery. Further Reading A. Patrizio and S. D. McElroy, Alan Davie: Jingling Space (2003). One hundred and forty eight of his works are held in prominent UK public collections.

George Morrison (Grand Portage Anishinaabe, 1919-2000). Acrylic on canvas-laid board painting titled "Ice Flow: February: Lake Superior Landscape," from the Horizon series, 1986. Signed, titled, and dated along the verso. Housed in an original frame custom built by Morrison.Lot Essay:Regarded as the founding figure of Native American modernism and among the top American abstract expressionist painters is George Morrison. Also highly regarded as a master collage artist, he assembled large collages of found driftwood and woodcut in framed, puzzle-like forms. In the 1940s, he was formally trained at the Minneapolis College of Art and in the 1950s at the Art Students League in New York before receiving a Fulbright to study in France. Taking his place as part of the modern art movement in New York in the 1950s after World War II, he was friends with Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, regularly exhibiting with de Kooning, Philip Guston, Hans Hofmann, and Franz Kline. Morrison helped bring the New York Modern Art movement to Minnesota, where he was based and worked with pure form via Abstract Expressionism. Later in his career, in the mid-1970s, Morrison shifted to a new theme and started to really explore his heritage when he and his family built a home with an art studio on the Grand Portage Indian Reservation on Lake Superior, naming it Red Rock.Rather than portraying an overt depiction of identity, Morrison was in the process of exploring his identity so he looked to nature, stating “in this search for my own identity, I seek the power of the rock, the magic of the water, the religion of the tree, the color of the wind and the enigma of the horizon.†Translating nature into paintings was Morrison’s way to navigate learning and absorption, and in turn produce self-expression. His token theme was the horizon, taking on dynamic form as colors or shapes in the eternal motion of nature. His inspiration was provided by Lake Superior, observing and documenting the temporary sight of the revered sky meeting landscape that he beheld in the moment. His artworks are spotted today in the collections of the Heard Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art, US National Gallery of Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, and the Walker Art Center. In 1997 he was honored in a ceremony at the White House when his work was included in the Twentieth Century American Sculpture at The White House: Honoring Native Americans exhibition. In 1999 Morrison was honored as inaugural Master Artist in the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis.Sight; height: 5 in x width: 14 1/2 in. In 1999 Morrison was honored as inaugural Master Artist in the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis.Sight; height: 7 in x width: 14 in.
