ASTERIX CONQUERS AMERICA (1994) - Asterix, Obelix and Multi-Character Original Production Cel and Pan Original Layout Drawing Setup - A richly detailed pan layout setup from the animated feature Asterix Conquers America (aka Asterix In America), expertly composed using seven original hand-painted production cels over a large-format pan background drawing.Asterix Conquers America was the first Asterix film produced entirely outside France and marked an ambitious expansion of the franchise. With its distinctive style, international tone, and strong visual storytelling, it brought the iconic Gauls to a new generation. While this specific arrangement does not appear "as is" in the film, each cel and layout element was created for the production and has been thoughtfully assembled by the studio to showcase the visual dynamism and character design that define the feature. The studio officially released this piece as part of the Asterix Art Program, curated to preserve the series' legacy and offer collectors a rare look into the production process.Set in a Native American village deep in the New World, the artwork brings together an ensemble of key characters: the defiant Asterix stands mid-conversation alongside the wise druid Getafix (Panoramix), recently kidnapped and flung across the ocean by Roman forces. To their side, the young tribal girl, while a wary villager and medicine man, and the elaborately dressed village chief observe from either end, the ever-faithful Obelix acting as both mediator and muscle in the scene. The pencil layout background stretches across, laying out the ceremonial grounds and tipi village in a sweeping perspective. These layouts were integral to shot planning, camera movement, and cel positioning. The scale, clarity, and theatrical composition make this setup an ideal display piece, a scene that captures the drama and charm of the film's aesthetic. Multiple production reference numbers are handwritten along the bottom edge of the cels, and several annotations are written on the drawing. The official studio stamp is present on the bottom right corner of the layout, authenticating its origin. A special offering for fans of the franchise and for collectors who value the immediacy, scale, and storytelling power of original animation art. Dimensions: 31 cm x 109 cm (12.25" x 43")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: Ω

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991) - Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip and Sultan Hand-Painted Cel Setup and Production Background - A hand-painted cel setup featuring the beloved enchanted objects Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and Sultan, the footstool from Walt Disney's animated film Beauty and the Beast, placed over the actual screen-used production background.Although Beauty and the Beast was the first Disney feature to use CAPS (Computer Animation Production System) for final colouring, thereby eliminating the traditional cel painting from the production process, Disney recognised collectors' interest in physical artwork as they have done since the 1930's with supplying the Courvoisier galleries. For the 1992 Sotheby's The Art of Beauty and the Beast auction, 249 unique setups were created, using hand-inked and painted cels based on original animation drawings, carefully matched to actual production backgrounds used in the film. The result: a hybrid of artistry and authenticity, offering collectors the closest experience to owning a piece of the finished film. This lot was part of the Sotheby's auction. This piece is a true collector's piece. Rare, character-rich, and directly tied to the making of an Oscar-winning classic. This scene captures a moment of comic tension and curiosity as Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and the faithful footstool Sultan peer in horror and amazement. The background here is a masterclass in layout and lighting, with rich burgundy tones, gilded mouldings, and elegant architectural perspective rendered in gouache. The cel characters pop with warmth and vitality, and their lighting effects are carefully considered to match the background's highlights and shadow. A Walt Disney Productions stamp is present on the back of the piece and the lot is accompanied by a The Art of Beauty and the Beast certificate of authenticity. Dimensions: 32 cm x 43.25 cm (12.5" x 17")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M

DISNEY'S HERCULES (1997) - Pain and Panic Original Concept Drawing - A detailed black pencil concept cleanup drawing featuring Pain and Panic, the mischievous minions of Hades from Walt Disney's Hercules.Due to Hercules being produced during the digital animation era, original pencil drawings like this remain the only tangible, hand-drawn elements used in the creation of the film, offering a rare look at the character development process.Drawn by studio artist Cody Reynolds, this full-figure composition captures the impish energy and contrast between the two characters: Pain's hunched, nervous posture and Panic's wide-eyed, frantic expression, mid-exchange over the Fates' eyeball. The lines are clean and expressive, typical of the refined "cleanup" phase where rough animation is translated into final line art for production reference or potential cel translation. The drawing also features the official Disney copyright red-coloured stamp in the lower right corner. Dimensions: 32 cm x 43.25 cm (12.5" x 17")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: Ω

Carl Menger assisted with Singer’s Habilitation in 1885, then qualifying as a professor at the University of Vienna and becoming a private lecturer in statistics; and from 1892 onwards an extraordinary professor of statistics. Also in 1885, he published Untersuchungen über die socialen zustände in den fabrikbezirken des nordöstlichen Böhmen; ein beitrag zur methodik socialstatistischer beobachtung (‘Investigations into the Social Conditions of Northeastern Bohemia. A Contribution to the Method of Social-Statistical Investigations’). In the 1880s, Singer critically examined the emergence of modern anti-Semitism in Germany and Austria.Einaudi 3881.Rare first edition of Menger's revolutionary work in economics and the foundation of the Austrian School. Having arrived at the marginal utility theory independently of, but at the same time as, William Stanley Jevons and Léon Walras, Menger's Grundsätze extended it to indirect goods and complementary goods, integrating marginal utility theory into value and price theory. According to Joseph Schumpeter, Menger extended ‘the range of the principle of marginal utility over the whole area of production and distribution ... the whole organon of pure economics thus finds itself unified in the light of a single principle — in a sense in which it never had before’ (Schumpeter, History of Economic Analysis, p. 913).‘... In somewhat copious but always clear language, it [Grundsätze] provided a more thorough account of the relations between utility, value, and price than is found in any of the works by Jevons and Walras, who at about the same time laid the foundation of the “marginal revolution” in economics’ (Friedrich von Hayek, in IESS).

LENIN VLADIMIR: (1870-1924) Russian revolutionary and politician who served as the first and founding head of government of Soviet Russia 1917-24 and of the Soviet Union 1922-24 & TSIURUPA ALEXANDER (1870-1928) Bolshevik leader and Soviet politician who served as People's Commissar for Food of the RSFSR 1918-21. A rare D.S. by both Lenin ('V Ulyanov (Lenin)') and Tsiurupa ('A Tsyurupa') individually, one page, folio, Kremlin, Moscow, 20th June 1919, with the stamped heading of the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic Workers and Peasants Defence Council, in Cyrillic. The typed document is addressed to Narkomprod (People's Commissariat for Food Supplies) of Crimea and states, in part, 'Considering the severity of the food situation in Russia, and the enormous shortages of food for children, especially for sick children, I suggest that all canned fruits available in Crimea, as well as cheese, should be earmarked solely for feeding sick children in Northern Russia. Products should be sent to Komprod's address'. Signed at the conclusion by Lenin in his capacity as Chairman of the Defence Council and by Tsiurupa in his capacity as People's Commissar for Food Supplies, alongside an official circular purple ink stamp. Some very light, extremely minimal age wear, VGThe People's Commissariat for Food Supplies (also known by it's abbreviation Narkomprod) was originally founded in 1917 and was the ministry of the Russian SFSR in charge of food supplies and industrial goods.Lenin and Tsiurupa signed the present document at a significant time during the Russian Civil War (1917-23) throughout which Crimea changed hands numerous times. Whilst it was governed by the Bolsheviks in June 1919, it would not be long before it became the stronghold of the anti-Bolshevik White Army under the command of General Anton Denikin. It is therefore possible that Lenin and Tsiurupa, aware of the situation facing Crimea, were attempting to get as much food as they could out of the area before it was too late.

STRAUSS RICHARD: (1864-1949) German composer. A highly unusual signed hand-print, one page, 8vo (approximately 16.5 x 21 cm), Berlin, 21st April 1925. The black ink print is of the composer´s right hand and clearly displays the palmar flexion creases of his palm and fingers, and with a few light brown paint marks to the edges. Signed (´Dr. Richard Strauss´) in black fountain pen ink to the lower left, adding the place and date, Berlin, 21st April 1925 in his hand. With the purple ink stamp of M. Rachig´s Handarchiv to the lower right corner. A rare and visually appealing form of Strauss´s autograph. Some light creasing and age wear, and with a few small tears to the right edge, GThe remarkable hand-print of Strauss was taken by the palmist Marianne Raschig and used by her in her book Hand und Persönlichkeit. Einführung in das System der Handlehre, (1931).

PAVLOV IVAN: (1849-1936) Russian experimental neurologist and physiologist, known for his discovery of classical conditioning through his experiments with dogs. Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine, 1904. A printed 8vo copy of Naturwissenschaft und Gehirn (´Natural Science and the Brain´), being the text of the lecture Pavlov gave at the General Assembly of the XII Congress of Russian Natural Scientists and Physicians in Moscow on 28th December 1909, the authorised translation into German by Dr. G. W. Volbroth, and published by J. F. Bergmann of Wiesbaden, 1910. Inscribed by Pavlov in black ink to the head of the printed paper wrapper, ´Hommage de l´auteur´. Also bearing an ink annotation and ownsership signature of G. H. Parker, alongside a Harvard University biological laboratories library centre stamp. Rare. Some light age wear and with a vertical central fold, otherwise about VGIn 1910 Pavlov´s lecture was also published in In Memory of Darwin, a collection of essays honouring the 100th anniversary of Darwin´s birth and the 50th anniversary of the publication of his On the Origin of Species. Although not mentioning Darwin or his theory of evolution by name, Pavlov claims that only an experimental study of animal adaptation to the external environment can produce scientific knowledge on the elementary modes of behaviour. Pavlov states that ´psychology up to now still is the realisation of the inner world of humans in search of their own, real methods. And the physiologist undertook the ungrateful task to guess the inner world of the animals. From this it is not difficult to understand that the study of the most complicated part of central nervous system of the higher animals is up to now still not regularly and continously progressing. This research is approximatly one hundred years old´.Pavlov also writes on the conditional reflex which German physiologist Hermann von Helmholz (1821-1894) had referred to in his writings as ´unconscious conclusion´, stating, in part, ´evidently what the genius Helmholtz referred to as ´unconscious conclusion´ corresponds to the mechanisms of the conditioned reflex. When, for example, the physiologist says that for the formation of the conception of the actual size of an object there is necessary a certain length of the image on the retina and a certain action of the internal and external muscle of the eye, he is stating the mechanism of the conditioned reflex. When a certain combination of stimuli, arising from the retina and ocular muscles, coincides several times with the tactile stimulus of a body of certain size, this combination comes to play the role of a signal, and becomes the conditioned stimulation for the real size of the object. From this hardly contestable point of view, the fundamental facts of the psychological part of the physiological optics is physiologically nothing else than a series of conditioned reflexes, i.e. a series of elementary facts concerning the complicated activity of the eye analyser´

ZAPATA EMILIANO: (1879-1919) Mexican revolutionary. Zapata was the main leader of the Mexican Revolution 1910-20 and the inspiration of the agrarian movement called Zapatismo. An excellent content and rare T.L.S., `Emiliano Zapata´, a bold and large signature with flourish, one page, large folio, Tlaltizapán - Morelos, 2nd May 1918, to General Gildardo Magaña, in Spanish. The doci¡ument bears to the upper left corner the printed heading of the "Ejercito Libertador - Cuartel General" ("Head Quarters of the Liberatory Army") and beneath an ink stamp of the same Army. Zapata first acknowledges the information received regarding an uprising, saying `Tomo nota por la información que con fecha 27 de abril me transmite usted de la sublevación de las tropas de Cirilo Arenas, y de los trabajos que aprovechando tal circunstancia ha llevado a cabo, a fin de atraerse a los pueblos comprendidos en la zona de los arenistas´ (Translation: "I take note of the information you sent me on April 27th regarding the uprising of Cirilo Arenas' troops, and the work that he has carried out, taking advantage of this circumstance, in order to attract the towns included in the area of the Arenas.") Further, Zapata strongly disagrees with the appointment made by his correspondent for what he considers an important post related to agriculture, one of his main activism claims, stating in part `Debo advertirle que de ninguna manera apruebo que se haya encargado el Ingeniero Soto y Gama de los Ramos de Instrucción Pública y Agricultura. La persona que se encargue de este Ramo, debe saber tratar a las personas y sobre todo a los pueblos con sumo tacto...´ (Translation: "I must warn you that I in no way approve of Engineer Soto y Gama being put in charge of the Public Education and Agriculture branches. It is clear to you that Agriculture is our most important department, our foundation, our flagship, and under no circumstances can a person be left in charge of this department who lacks the energy, the love of work, and (this is the most essential) the most rudimentary understanding of Agriculture. The person in charge of this department must know how to treat people, and above all, treat the people, with the utmost tact...") Few very small tears to edges professionally repaired. G to VG Giraldo Magaña (1891-1939) Mexican General, Politician and revolutionary. In 1916 he was appointed chief of staff to Emiliano Zapata because he was the only one who was able to make unruly sub-commanders of the movement cooperate instead of quarrel, using his personal charm as well as his outstanding diplomatic skill for the task. When Zapata was killed in 1919, Magaña was elected his successor. When Alvaro Obregon revolt raised up in 1920, Magaña immediately declared his movement's support and provided Obregón with the army with which he conquered Mexico D.F. In return, the movement got the Ministry of Agriculture, mentioned as a main point by Zapata in this letter, and its desired agrarian reform made law. Antonio Diaz Soto y Gama (1880-1967) Mexican politician and revolutionary. After Zapata's murder in 1919, Soto y Gama continued to advise Zapata's successor, Giraldo Magaña and eventually joined the movement of Obregon (whom Antonio called "the executor of the ideas of Emiliano Zapata") Although President Obregón had asked him to serve in his cabinet as Minister of Agriculture, Díaz Soto y Gama declined. Complying (may be not knowing) with Zapata´s wish, according to the present letter.

PIUS III: (1439-1503) Pope of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 22nd September to 18th October 1503. At just twenty-six days, Pius III had one of the shortest pontificates in papal history. An exceptionally rare D.S., F[ranciscus]. C[ardinalis] de Piccolomineis, as Papal Legate to Rome and the Papal States, one page (vellum), slim oblong folio (32 x 12 cm), St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, 5th June 1464, in Latin. The manuscript document, issued in the name of Pope Pius II, and penned in an elegant script, states that the recipient's letters 'in which you have indicated to us certain suspicions cast by you….and also an account of what has been reported of Jacopo Piccinino' have been read, commenting 'We, beloved child, think that suspicions of this kind are vain, but we praise you for being cautious' and further continuing 'the care and diligence in averting and rejecting the plans of the malicious should always be praised, and We who are the ones who protect and defend you as we desire….Therefore, concerning the Corsicans who are trying to enter into your state, we ordered the governor of our Patrimony to seize them and punish them according to their demerits'. The document also states, 'As regards Piccinino, although he has received the….stipend from the King [Ferdinand I of Naples] and his Serenity needs his services for the establishment of his kingdom and his state, and as we have been informed he does not wish to let him go, nevertheless we shall not fail to protect you where necessary…..Our beloved son Antonio [Piccolomini], Duke of Amalfi……will soon arrive, who will station a part of our army in the territory of your country….' Adding that the Duke has been commanded to defend and protect their land and subjects if necessary. Autographs of Pope Pius III, the nephew of Pius II, are of the utmost rarity and the present document is also of historical significance for its references to Jacopo Piccinino and Antonio Piccolomini. Some light overall damp staining and two very small holes to the body of the document, the text remaining clear and entirely legible. Some traces of former mounting to the verso and with the (slightly indistinct) circular red stamp of the College heraldique de France to the verso. About VGThe recipient of the present document is unclear, however one valid candidate would be Marino Marzano (1420-1494) Italian nobleman, Grand Admiral of the Kingdom of Naples, and an ally of Pope Pius II. Pius II (1405-1464) Pope of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States 1458-64. A Renaissance humanist, and member of the House of Piccolomini, Pius II had achieved fame as an author in Latin before becoming Pope. Jacopo Piccinino (1423-1465) Italian condottiero, nobleman and feudal lord. In 1450 Piccinino became a General in the Venetian Army and in 1463 participated in the dynastic wars which tore apart the Kingdom of Naples. In 1465 he was called to Naples to receive the position as viceroy of Abruzzi and serve as leader of King Ferdinand I of Naple's troops, however he was treacherously arrested on the King's orders and condemned to death.Antonio Piccolomini (1435-1492) Duke of Amalfi. Italian soldier and politician. Brother of Francesco Piccolomini, the future Pope, and a nephew of Pius II from whom the Duke received numerous favours and investitures. Appointed Lieutenant General of Men-at-Arms of the Kingdom of Naples, at the time of the present document the Duke was engaged in eliminating the last resistances of Jacopo Piccinino and participated in various military campaigns involving the Kingdom of Naples.Ferdinand I (1424-1494) King of Naples 1458-94, one of the most influential and feared monarchs in Europe at the time and an important figure in the Italian Renaissance. Pius II had convened the Congress of Mantua in 1459 in order to plan a war against the Ottoman Turks, Christendom's common enemy, and in January 1460 the Pope proclaimed the official crusade. However, by November 1463, little progress had been made and the Pope, in an effort to organise the crusade himself, invited all of the Christian nobility to join. The Venetians immediately agreed, as did George Kastriot Skanderberg, leader of the Albanian resistance, who declared war on the Ottomans on 27th November 1463. The Pope did not succeed in securing the support of estranged France; the Duke of Burgundy breaking his promises; Milan was engrossed in an attempt to seize Genoa; and Florence cynically advised the Pope to let the Turks and the Venetians to wear each other out. Pius II was aware that he was nearing his end, and his malady most likely prompted the feverish impatience with which on 18th June 1464, less than two weeks after the present document was issued, he assumed the cross and departed for Ancona to conduct the crusade in person. Provenance: Previously contained in the archives of the College heraldique de France, a leading organisation in the studies of noble genealogy that was created in 1841 by Claude Drigon, Marquis of Magny (1796-1879). Its large collections, estimated to be 350,000 documents (including 60,000 charters from the 11th - 14th centuries) were dispersed at auction at the Hotel Drouot in 1935-37.

JAMES DEANA rare production shot of a 23-year-old James Dean in The Immoralist. A vintage gelatin silver print depicting a young James Dean on stage in his role as the Arab houseboy in The Immoralist alongside costars Geraldine Page and Louis Jourdan. The photograph stamped on the back "LIFE PHOTO/BY/PETER STACKPOLE" and also dated March 2nd, 1954 and with the stamp of The Life Picture Collection. 8 x 13 inches. Slight curling, light handling wear, a few small abrasions. A scarce vintage print depicting James Dean in his Broadway debut in The Immortalist. The photo was taken on stage by the famous theater photographer Peter Stackpole of Dean and costars in the bleak stage-set of André Gides’s play which premiered in February 1954. It was during these performances that Dean was first noticed by Elia Kazan, who brought him to Hollywood to film East of Eden where he quickly became a legend of the silver screen. While other shots from Peter Stackpole's shoot of The Immortalist were widely reproduced, apparently this shot depicting Dean in an onstage dance, was never used and is scarce. No condition report?
