Als Maler schuf er überwiegend Genreszenen, als Graphiker und Illustrator zumeist dem Jugendstil verwandte Märchenbilder und Illustrationen. 1880 bis 1884 studierte er an der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste bei Christian Griepenkerl, danach an der Münchner Kunstakademie bei Nikolaus Gysis und Wilhelm von Diez. Ab 1897 arbeitete Lefler eng mit Joseph Urban zusammen, der durch Heirat der Schwester Leflers sein Schwager wurde. 1900 wurde Lefler gemeinsam mit Urban Initiator und Mitbegründer des Hagenbundes (Mitglied bis 1909, 1902 erster Präsident); er entwarf das Plakat für die 1. und Eröffnungs-Ausstellung des Hagenbundes (I-III/1902). 1900 bis 1903 wirkte er unter der Direktion Gustav Mahlers als Ausstattungsleiter an der Wiener Hofoper, 1903 bis 1910 war er Professor an der Wiener Akademie der bildenden Künste. Er wurde seinem Mitbewerber Gustav Klimt vorgezogen. Schüler Leflers waren z.B. Rudolf Junk und kurzzeitig auch Richard Gerstl. Gemeinsam mit Urban schuf Lefler zahlreiche Illustrationen für Märchenbücher und Kalender (Verlag Gerlach), sowie auch die Fresken im Wiener Rathuauskeller. Weitere Gelegegenheit zur Zusammenarbeit mit Urban boten der Schiller-Fest-Umzug 1905, und der Ringstraßen-Umzug anlässlich des Kaiser-Jubiläums 1908. Lefler schuf Bühnenbilder und Kostüme, u.a. für die Metropolitan Opera New York (1902), die Wiener Hof- und Volksoper und für deutsche Bühnen. Als Kunstgwerbler entwarf er Möbeln, Wandschirme, Kassetten, Stickereien und Fächer. Als Plakatkünstler war Lefler einer der ersten Österreicher, die sich mit Firmen- und Ausstellungsplakaten befassten (z.B. „Auer-Licht“ oder für Krupp-Berndorf). 1902 entwarf Lefler gemeinsam mit Urban eine 1000-Kronen-Banknote, welches ein Porträt von Leflers späterer Frau zierte, der Opernsängerin Mina Wiesmüller. In „Die grüne Planke“ legt der Künstler eine Spur aus scheinbar zusammenhanglosen Gegenständen, die sich an oder vor dem titelgebenden Zaun befinden: Zigarettenkippen, eine halb abgebrannte Kerze, ein Handtuch, ein schwarzer Hut – fast scheint es, als sähe man Überreste einer Beschattung, den Schauplatz einer Spionageaktion. Doch vielleicht sind gar nicht diese menschlichen Hinterlassenschaften das eigentlich Rätselhafte, Bedrohliche, sondern das, was sich über der Szene befindet? Hinter dem Zaun ragen einzelne riesige Blätter anstelle von Strauchwerk empor, am blutroten Himmel schwebt eine von Radziwills mysteriösen Himmelserscheinungen, ein ornamental bemaltes Kugelgebilde. Ab Anfang der 1940er Jahre werden diese unentschlüsselbaren Himmelsobjekte prägender Bestandteil seiner Werke. Das hier aufgegebene Rätsel kann nicht aufgelöst werden – noch nicht einmal durch den Maler selbst: „Meine Bilder haben schon ihr Thema. Es wird mich bei der Arbeit geleitet haben, aber ich selbst weiß nichts von diesem Vorgang. Neulich stand ich mit meiner Frau vor einem eben vollendeten Bilde, prüfend, ob die Malerei meiner Kritik standhielte […] endlich sagte ich: Ich kann es nicht begreifen, dass dieses alles durch mich hindurchgegangen ist, und genauso wenig kann ich sagen, warum das Bild so und nicht anders geworden ist. Aber wie in diesem Falle ergeht es mir bei jedem Bild: der Schaffensprozess bleibt im Dunkel“, schrieb Franz Radziwill 1963 (zit. nach: Brigitte Reinhardt, in: Andrea Firmenich/Rainer W. Stern, Ernst. Sandgrube. Öl auf Leinwand. Verso signiert, betitelt und bezeichnet "Secession". Wohl Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bildgröße: 60 x 90 cm. Gerahmt: 64,5 x 94,5 cm.Ernst Stern (1876-1954) besuchte ab 1894 die Münchner Kunstakademie und studierte u.a. unter Franz von Stuck. Ab 1905 in Berlin lebend, trat er der Berliner Secession und dem Deutschen Künstlerbund bei. Seine Haupttätigkeit als Szenen- und Bühnenbildner übte er von 1906 bis 1921 am Deutschen Theater unter Max Reinhardt aus. Ab 1918 entwarf Stern auch regelmäßig Filmkulissen. - Das Bild etwas angedunkelt und berieben, teils mit stärkerem Krakelee bis hin zu seltenen Aufplatzungen der Ölfarbe, der goldene Holzrahmen berieben und kratzspurig. - Provenienz: Aus dem Nachlass Peter Schwichtenbergs.

She was the head of a professionally trained mercenary army, inherited from her European mercenary husband, Walter Reinhardt Sombre. This mercenary army consisted of Europeans and Indians. Overall still in good condition.
