A Victorian needlework sampler worked by Ellen Ball of Ashton School and dated October 29 1861, the central verse from 'The Golden Rule' by Isaac Watts with panels of flowering plants and insects above and below, enclosed by a floral and foliate border, in glazed maple frame, 60.5cm x 53.5cm CONDITION REPORT:The sampler is framed under glass and has not been removed for inspection.  The thread colours appear to be relatively bright given the age of the piece, and the backing cloth shows only expected age-related darkening and the odd small stain.  There is no obvious evidence of insect damage.  The frame appears to be structurally sound, but shows slightly open joints to the corners and wear to the surface finish.  The glass appears to be the original.
