Our portrait depicts an unidentified Muslim courtier from the reign of Emperor Jahangir.

Fritted edges with some occasional tears. This painting has suffered from exposition to a damp environment. It shows slightly dulled pigments which have flaked and lifted off in the lower and upper parts of this work as can be seen in the catalogue and online illustrations. It is stained, water stained and shows some pitting. Creased, scuffed overall. Some smudges. The reverse extensively stained.

Ca. AD 618 - 907.A large terracotta figure representing a standing Sogdian merchant with exaggerated facial features, including a furrowed brow, bulging eyes, full beard, and prominent nose. He wears a pointed cap that fits snugly around the head, obscuring the hair. The figure is shown in an active stance, with both arms bent and fists clenched. He is dressed in a short-sleeved tunic secured with a broad sash over long trousers. The garment is decorated with incised folds and faint traces of red pigment visible on the sleeves and lower robe.
