Follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller Portrait of Robert Walpole (1676-1745), three quarter length, seated in the robes of Chancellor of the Exchequeroil on canvas124.5 x 100.5cmProvenance:Sir William and Lady Hutt; Christie's, London, 20 June 1913, lot 101, as 'Hoare of Bath' (16gns. to Bigham);Christie's, London, 11 November 1994, lot 84, as 'Follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller', when acquired by the present ownerThe present work, depicting Walpole in the robes of the Chancellor of the Exchequer, likely dates to the early-mid 1720s, before he was appointed a Knight of the Garter in 1726. As such, the traditional attribution to William Hoare of Bath (1707-1792), a teenager at this time, seems unlikely. With the exception of facial features, a near identical composition to the present work exists in the form of a portrait of John Hay, 4th Marquess of Tweeddale, by William Aikman (National Galleries of Scotland, PG 2226), indicating a possible connection to the Scottish artist. Indeed, a larger, full-length portrait by Aikman, depicting Walpole at a slightly later date (wearing the blue sash of the Order of the Garter), exists at Blickling Hall (no. 355487).The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support which has been lined. The canvas tension is good and the picture is in plane. The paint layers are in a good, stable condition overall. There are some localised areas of overpaint in the background which are slightly mismatched to the surrounding paint layers. The varnish is slightly yellowed but glossy and even.

They specialised in works on paper. The gallery was forced to move in 1893, and the brothers dissolved the partnership; George opened a gallery at 1622 Chestnut Street and Adolph opened the Adolph Newman and Son Gallery at 704 Chestnut Street with his son Walter. Adolph and Walter B. Newman were forced to move again in 1918 to 1732 Chestnut Street. In 1920, Adolph retired and left the gallery to his son and to his grandson Walter Andrew Newman. The depression necessitated the move in 1935 to yet another location, this time at 1625 Walnut Street, and in the 1960s a frame and repair shop was added to the business at 2306 South Street. The old retailer sticker of the frame that once contained the present painting must have been in use between the last move and the time when the frame and repair shop were added to the family business. 21.8cm x 15.4cm Qty: 1

Henri IV (1553-1589-1610), Marie de Medici (1575-1642) and the Dauphin (later Louis XIII), cast silver medal, 1603, by Guillaume Dupré conjoined busts right, Henri in decorated armour with sash and wearing the St Ésprit, Marie with hair high and lace collar, HENR IIII R CHRIST MARIA AVGVSTA, rev. Henri as Mars and Marie as Minerva, clasp hands, the infant Dauphin stands between, foot on dolphin, placing helmet on head, PROPAGO IMPERI, beaded border to both sides, 67mm, 77.33g (BMC [Jones] II, 15; Kress 556; Maz II, 656 ). Extremely fine.Provenance:Bought Fritz Rudolf Künker GmbH & Co. KG, Auction 401, 5 February 2024, lot 1035There is a consensus that Rubens used this medal as inspiration in his Marie de' Medici Cycle, a series of twenty-four paintings originally commissioned for the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris and now on display at the Louvre. Rubens's was awarded the commission in 1621 by Marie de' Medici, widow of Henri IV. The composition of The Consignment of the Regency, the ninth work in Ruben's series, shows clear parallels to that of the reverse of Dupré's medal. In Rubens's painting, Henri IV and Marie de' Medici's hands meet to clasp around an orb, symbolising his handing over of the guardianship of the French regency and care of their son, Louis XIII, to his wife. The Dauphin stands, contrapposto as in the medal, between them. The allegorical depiction of Marie as Minerva, a recurring theme in Dupré's medals featuring Marie, is also echoed in Ruben's series.

Montagu, Sotheby's, 24-29 May 1897, lot 160Prince Rupert: grandson of James I, third son of King Frederick and Queen Elizabeth (Stuart) of Bohemia, nephew of Charles I, Count Palatine of Rhine, Duke of Bavaria, Duke of Cumberland and Earl of Holderness. Prominent in the Royalist forces, in 1642 he was appointed General of the Horse and, having secured the Crown its first victory of the war, at Worcester, he fought at several historic civil war battles including Naseby and Marston Moor. Following the Commonwealth's victory, he left England returning after the Restoration to serve in the Navy under James, Duke of York. He was Admiral of the White fighting at both Lowestoft (see lot 428) and at Solebay, and ultimately received the title General at Sea and Land. Courageous and irascible in equal measure, he remains one of the most romantic Cavalier figures in British history.
