A MAHOGANY BREAKFRONT SECRETAIRE BOOKCASE CIRCA 1800 & LATER 266cm high, 280cm wide, 47cm deepPlease note, this bookcase should be dated as CIRCA 1800 & LATER and not as originally printed in the catalogue Condition Report: Please note, this bookcase should be dated as CIRCA 1800 & LATER and not as originally printed in the catalogue Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits, some losses, some old repairs Some lifting to veneers and some losses/ fractures. The largest areas of loss to veneer are to the side edges of the plinth (see images) and to some areas of the lower parts of the doors. Attention by a qualified restorer could replace the veneer and match well. Other areas of the bookcase that show faults or require 'cosmetic' attention could equally be tended to by a restorer .No cracks or breaks to glass detected. Some glass panels are likely to be old replacements. A high percentage are antique glass and show movement. The panels to the interior side of the upper bookcase section have been later lined with thin sheets of timber/ plywood and painted a cream/ off white colour probably within the last 20 years, possibly quite recently. The rear panels beyond the painted elements are fully paneled and appear to be original. We cannot guarantee the condition of elements covered by paint or timber panels The plinth base shows signs of being of later date, it may have been adapted or reconstructed in some way. The surface shows signs of being late 19th or 20th century and may have been repolished. The bookcase overall shows evidence of having been updated/ restored in the early 20th century as follows: One lock to the upper glazed doors is of this date. the shelves and the way they are fitted (with turned pegs) , the locks to the left hand drawers and two of the pairs of lower cupboards, the drawer handles (although faithful to period style) are all of early 20th century date. The lining to the drawers either side of the secretaire drawer have possibly been re-made. Other sections of the bookcase may have been re-made or re-configured. The lock to the secretaire drawer is lacking. The later baize inset to the secretaire bears various ink stains and wear. The shelves to the lower cupboard doors are crude modern replacements, one with thin timber covered in baize, the other plywood. Please refer to all additional images for visual reference to condition. They are a vital element of the report. The additional images for this lot include images to reflect the number of parts this bookcase breaks into in order to be moved. Condition Report Disclaimer
