The gift of H.M. Queen Victoria, fine Indian Kashmir shawl of intricate traditional design including with figures with sewn label 'Horatia E Erskine, June 26th 1861 (Indian) from H.M. Queen Victoria' approx 350 x 140 cm.Provenance: Horatia Elizabeth Erskine (nee Seymour) styled Lady Elizabeth Erskine (1842-1922) daughter of General The Marquess of Hertford and one of Queen Victoria's Courtiers. It is known that Queen Victoria adopted the Indian practice of giving Kashmiri shawls as gifts to visiting dignitaries and coming-of-age and wedding presents to her friends at Court. Horatia was married to David Erskine of Cardross in 1861 at the Chapel Royal, Windsor and therefore this shawl was most likely a treasured wedding gift from the Queen. Thence by family descent. An Early First World War No.2 Dress Tunic to a Second Lieutenant, Territorial Battalion the Durham Light Infantry, with brass collar badges, raised embroidered rank cuffs and leather football buttons (af); a Victorian Scarlet Mess Dress Jacket to a Lieutenant the Durham Light Infantry, with raised bullion thread rank pips (one missing) and scarlet taffeta shawl collar, with gilt two part buttons, and a green wool waistcoat; a Similar Scarlet Mess Dress Jacket, to a Captain (4)The khaki jacket has a 2.5cm repaired tear to the left lower collar, with some red staining to the same area and below on the main body of the jacket. The left arm has three small moth holes, with another to the side of the top right patch pocket. The lower right patch pocket has two holes at the lower section, with a further hole in the main body and the hem on the same side. The collar has come unstitched at the back neck, with further small loss of seam stitches under the right arm. There are no labels on this jacket.

The gallery was forced to move in 1893, and the brothers dissolved the partnership; George opened a gallery at 1622 Chestnut Street and Adolph opened the Adolph Newman and Son Gallery at 704 Chestnut Street with his son Walter. Adolph and Walter B. Newman were forced to move again in 1918 to 1732 Chestnut Street. In 1920, Adolph retired and left the gallery to his son and to his grandson Walter Andrew Newman. The depression necessitated the move in 1935 to yet another location, this time at 1625 Walnut Street, and in the 1960s a frame and repair shop was added to the business at 2306 South Street. PAISLEY PATTERN SHAWL, on black ground with fringed edge328cm longAdditional images now uploaded showing front and back. There are four 'white spots' that can be seen on the large central black area of the shawl and these are small holes in the fabric. The paisley pattern areas are in excellent order. The fringing a little worn in places but overall still very good order.
