Famed for his roles in Westerns, Wayne was perhaps best known for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in 1969's True Grit, for which he won an Oscar and a Golden Globe. He was also given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.The black-and-white image is taken from Wayne's 1972 LIFE magazine cover, and depicts Wayne dressed in a cowboy costume, holding a shotgun. Beier / Brünn | Condition: very good | Lot information | An interesting hunting pellet gun with rotating barrels (the so-called Wender system) from the second quarter of the 19th century, made by gunsmith J. Beier in Brünn. The weapon was originally made as a flintlock, later adapted to a percussion system. They are mainly octagonal in cross-section, the upper surface is inlaid with the manufacturer's signature in silver letters "J. Beier / Brünn". The lock plate is decorated with a fine engraving of hunting motifs, mainly depicting a dog and plant ornaments. The stock is made of dark, smoothly machined wood, with brass fittings and fine carvings. The rifle is preserved in its original authentic condition with a natural patina. The side plates are bearing a certain amount of patination of age and light corrosion which has been cleaned back at some time. The barrel has been re-blued but looks in reasonable condition. The bores have some pitting. We would suggest this has been the use of black powder cartridges historiacally. The weapon cocks, holds and fires on both triggers. LONDON', doll's head extension, scroll engraved fences, inclined strikers re-set by the extractors on closing, pivoting action lever inscribed 'WESTLEY RICHARDS PATENT', scroll engraved sidelocks signed 'WESTLEY RICHARDS', dolphin-head hammers falling in a manner evocative of a pinfire gun, chequered stock of well figured walnut extending to cover the bar and meeting the key-fastened fore-end in a well-formed knuckle joint, steel butt plate; in a leather covered oak gun case, the beize lined fitted interior with trade label and maintenance instructions to the lid. Please note that this gun is not offered as serviceable and should not be fired. It is offered as a collector's gun only, accompanied by its proof exemption certificate.
