A Chinese famille rose vase, Republic period (1912-1949), of cylindrical form, painted with a continuous scene of five boys in a garden, all holding objects symbolic of scholarly success and good fortune, two with ruyi sceptres, one carrying a spear tied with a ribbon suspending a chime, one with a vase with a stalk of grain and a lantern, and another holding a lantern in the shape of a fish, all between two dense floral scroll borders, the base with a four-character mark lingzhi chengxiang (the qilin's footprints foretell good fortune) in iron red, 28.5cm highThe decoration is filled with symbols of posterity. The five boys represent the sons of Dou Yujun, all of whom achieved exceptional success and were known as the 'five dragons'. The mark lingzhi chengxiang is an ancient greeting used to wish couples the birth of a son and often found on pieces decorated with boys and qilin.Condition ReportSmall chips to rim. Japanese hand-painted woodcut on paper by Utagawa Yoshifusa, titled Earth of Kawanakajima from the series Selections for the Ten Stems. This dynamic composition features two samurai warriors in full armor mid-battle, rendered with meticulous detail and expressive linework. Arrows pierce the air as the figures clash, one gripping a war fan and the other a spear. Rich tones of indigo, umber, and crimson highlight the intricately patterned garments and armor. The woodcut includes the series and title cartouches in the upper right and the artist's signature cartouche at lower right. Framed in black with a wood panel backing bearing a Japanese label. Good quality 18th century Burmese Dha sword with hollow, highly pierced and carved ivory grip decorated with beasts, birds and floral scrolls, spear-pointed blade with central fuller in wooden sheath. The sword 75cm overall, the whole 77cm long.Provenance: Brought back to England from Burma in 1885 by General G.C.Wynyard. GREAT BRITAIN. George III, 1760-1820. Silver Dollar (5 Shillings), 1804. Bank of England (Soho Mint). Overstruck Spanish American 8 Real coin issued by the Bank of England with a value of 5 shillings to supplement a deficiency in British silver coins. The coins were struck by the Soho Mint, Birmingham between 1804 and 1811, though all bear the date 1804. They were re-valued at 5 shillings 6 pence in 1811 and were withdrawn in 1817-1818. Proofs were also stuck on specially prepared flans, so these do not show a ghost of a host coin unlike many of the circulation coins.Laureate and draped bust facing right, C.H.K. on truncation. Legend around: 'GEORGIUS III DEI GRATIA.'.
