A pith helmet contained in a bespoke toleware case, inscribed J R P Montgomery, 52nd Light Infantry case 36cm longProvenance: John Rupert Patrick Montgomery MC OBE (25th July 1913 – 27th June 2008)John Rupert Patrick Montgomery was born on 25th July 1913 in Bromyard, Herefordshire, England. He graduated from the Royal Military College in September 1933 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the 1st Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry.During the Second World War, Montgomery served with distinction. In August 1943, he held the rank of Captain, acting as a temporary Major in the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. On the 8th May 1943, he commanded the left forward company of the 7th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry during an attack south of Gastla Wadi, north of Enfidaville, Tunisia. Under his leadership, the unit captured strategic high ground and held their position despite intense enemy counter-attacks. For this action, Montgomery was awarded the Military Cross (MC). His citation reads:"On the 8th of May 1943, Major Montgomery commanded the left forward company of 7th Oxf & Bucks when they captured the high ground south of Gastla Wadi, north of Enfidaville & exploited to the Wadi itself. During the attack he led his company with skill & determination, quickly crushing enemy resistance. So successfully did he reorganise the left of the position on the Wadi, which formed a deep salient into the enemy lines, that he beat off all enemy counter-attacks. His position was enfiladed & commanded by mountainous country with the enemy continually attempting to infiltrate into it & subjecting it to accurate MG & Mortar fire. In spite of fighting at close quarters, the enemy never succeeded in gaining a foothold. In this action Major Montgomery showed courage & leadership of a high standard & his determination & disregard of personal safety was a great inspiration & incentive to all ranks in their successful & spirited defence."Recommended by:Lieutenant Colonel Ralph Cyril Cruddas, Commanding Officer, 7th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light InfantryMajor General Douglas Alexander Henry Graham, Commander, 56th (London) DivisionGeneral Henry Maitland Wilson, Commander-in-Chief, Middle East ForcesBetween 31st January 1944 and 11th June 1944, he served as an Instructor at the Tactical School, Middle East Land Forces. From 8th November 1944 to 21st April 1945, he was assigned as a General Staff Officer, Grade 2 (GSO2) at a Training Centre. In 1953, Montgomery was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of the 17th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment. In 1979, he was appointed Secretary of the Anti-Slavery Society and was awarded the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to the cause.John Rupert Patrick Montgomery died on 27th June 2008 in Haywards Heath, Sussex, England. One previous ownerRecently recommissionedThe Porsche 944 S2 was introduced in 1989, powered by a 208bhp normally aspirated, dual overhead cam 16 valve 3.0 litre version of the 944 S engine. The largest production four-cylinder engine of its time, it featured a bore of 104mm (4.1 inches) and a stroke of 88mm (3.5 inches). The 944 S2 also received a revised gearbox to better suit the 3.0 litre engine. The 944 S2 had the same rounded nose and a rear valance found on the turbo model. The manual transmission cars quoted performance figures of a six seconds 0-97km/h acceleration time, (0-100 km/h being achieved in 6.8 seconds) and a top speed of 240km/h (150mph).Amazingly showing no former registered keepers, this Porsche 944 S2 presents a rare opportunity for the winning bidder to become only the second registered keeper of this unique car. Ordered and first registered on 21st September 1989 by Mr. George Woloszczuk of London, the supplied original order invoice shows the car was specified in Alpine White with black and white pinstripe cloth electric seats, air conditioning, removable roof and door panel inserts as well. Invoices in the history file show servicing bills from Porsche West London amongst others. Presenting well and benefiting from having just been recommissioned after a period of inactivity, a new MoT test certificate valid through until April 2026 is present, making the car ready to be enjoyed. Consigned by Will Penrose Interested parties should note that the private registration plate shown is to be retained by the vendor and a new, age-related registration issued instead. Without a number plate this vehicle will need to be transported from the auction, (although it runs and drives very well). If you need help in this regard, please just ask a member of staff. -ONLY ONE PRIOR REGISTERED KEEPER-RECENTLY RECOMMISSIONED-UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY

• Chauffeur driven car for Field Marshal Montgomery during WWII• HM King George VI, Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower were driven in this car• The Phantom III was the only pre-war Rolls-Royce powered by a V12 engine• Incredible history file and highly interesting provenance• Fitted with overdriveWe are pleased to present a truly remarkable automobile – the 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III Touring Limousine by Freestone & Webb, chassis number 3-AZ-186. A total of only 710 Phantom IIIs were built before production ceased due to the war, and today, fewer than 300 examples are thought to remain worldwide. This stunning car, famed for its smooth-running 7,338cc V12 engine and unparalleled luxury, is far more than a testament to the marque’s engineering prowess. It is an extraordinary piece of history, with direct connections to some of the most iconic figures of the Second World War, including Field Marshal Montgomery and Winston Churchill. The story of this Phantom III begins in 1936, when it was initially owned by Frederick Wilcock, the CEO of the Talbot Motor Company. At the outbreak of World War II, the car was requisitioned by the Ministry of War’s Transport Section for use by Field Marshal Montgomery, the commanding officer of the British Eighth Army. Montgomery, famously known as “Monty,” used the Rolls-Royce as his personal staff car during the war. The vehicle became known as the ‘Green Car’ due to its unique British Racing Green and black livery, a change from Montgomery’s usual black Rolls-Royces.Montgomery used the Phantom III extensively, travelling between his homes in Virginia Water, Surrey, and London, as well as during his time at Southwick House near Portsmouth in the crucial months leading up to the D-Day invasion of Europe. This car was part of the tight security and secrecy surrounding those meetings. In fact, Montgomery’s car carried not only him but also high-ranking military figures, including General and 34th President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower, Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and HM King George VI. A particularly fascinating detail is the custom electric cigar lighter fitted in the rear compartment for Churchill's personal use, still in place today. After the Allied victory in Europe, the Phantom III’s service continued. It was reassigned to the Chief of Staff of the United States Army Air Force, General Carl Spaatz. Unfortunately, while in American hands, it suffered some damage when an American fuel tanker backed into it, the damage that was subsequently repaired. In the 1950s, during the Suez Crisis, the car was purchased by a rubber-planter in Malaya and shipped to Penang. Given the closure of the Suez Canal, it was driven through Italy and shipped from Capetown to its new home in Malaya.By this time, the Phantom III had already earned a reputation as one of Rolls-Royce’s finest models, powered by the iconic V12 engine, unique to the Phantom III and the only Rolls-Royce to be powered by a V12 until the Silver Seraph arrived in 1998. Known for its smoothness, near-silent operation, and extraordinary torque, the Phantom III set a benchmark for luxury motoring in its day. Although the car had faced mechanical challenges in more remote regions, its engine was rebuilt several years ago and remains in superb condition. It now benefits from the fitment of overdrive, enhancing its refinement for modern road use. The car was serviced at Cheshire Classic Cars in 2017 at a cost of around £11,000 plus VAT, work consisted of a comprehensive engine service, a new exhaust system, and an alloy carburettor to replace the fragile Mazak original. In more recent years, the car has seen very little use, so some recommissioning would be recommended but the engine ran very smoothly during our photography, with some coughs from the exhaust, possibly due to either old fuel or an exhaust leak.In 2014, DGY 1 was driven back to Southwick House for a commemorative event marking the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Present at the event were prominent figures such as Patrick Churchill, Winston Churchill’s grandson, and Lady Arabella Stuart-Smith, Montgomery’s granddaughter. The car’s participation in this event, along with its mention in various media outlets, solidified its status as an important historical artifact. The extensive history file for this vehicle is a testament to its remarkable past, including its original wartime requisition letter. The file also contains numerous old logbooks, a huge amount of correspondence during the 1960’s when Mr Wilcock’s Son was trying to track down and purchase the car, writing to several owners trying to chase the car, but often just missing it after it had been sold, photographs, and further documentation detailing the car's fascinating ‘second life’ after the war. This 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III (DGY 1) is a rare and historically significant motorcar, offering a unique connection to the military and political leadership of World War II. It is a true collector’s piece, preserved in remarkable, possibly original, condition and benefitting from a well-documented provenance. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, this Phantom III is a must-see for any serious collector of automotive or wartime history. Supplied to auction with V5C registration document, highly detailed history folder and fitted toolkit in the boot, this Phantom III would be welcome at many top-level events and deserves to be shown around the world. The death of Napoleon Bonaparte, 5th May 1821 on St. Helena, historically important first hand detailed written account of Napoleon's death and the subsequent events following it written by Major Gideon Gorrequer (1780-1841), The Aide -de-Camp to Sir Hudson Lowe, The Governor of St. Helena, in the form of two four page letters and two one page letters written to Lt.Colonel (later General) Edward Buckley Wynyard C.B. (1788-1864) who served as military secretary to Sir Hudson Lowe, the Governor of St.Helena and gaoler of the former French Emperor from 1816-1820. The letters written by the Anglo- French Officer who had a close acquaintance with both Napoleon and Wynyard and was present on St.Helena at the time of his demise. The first letter headed 'St. Helena 6th May 1821' (the day after Napoleon's death). 'My dear Wynyard, I doubt if I shall be able to write you half a dozen lines if I can snatch a minute now and then from the anxiety we have in the land I will take advantage of it. Bonaparte expired yesterday evening at 10 minutes before six just at the very instant, the sun sank below the horizon he breathed his last sigh. He has been confined to his bed since the 17th of March; he consented to receive Arnott's visits from the 1st April but as he threw up everything almost that went down his throat would scarcely take any medication - or would not, or could not, take any nourishing. He has been sinking ever since the first day he took to his bed - indeed for many months he was constantly subject to fits of vomiting and took very little sustenance. Antommarchi probably ...with the disease from his dread of mercury- on the 3rd however, on a consultation of two other medical men, Arnott and Mitchell, surgeon of the Flag ship, he was induced to adopt their recommendation, and 10 grains of Calomel were given the patient, which produced a great effect and insight perhaps have saved him had it been administered in time but it showed his interior was a mass of corruption. He has died in a manly proper manner no complaint, no., no invective, no lamentation or nonsense - extreme unction was given to him before his death, and from 6 in the morning yesterday to 6 at night, the whole of his attendants, from the highest to the lowest surrounded his bed in deep silence (Madame Bertrand and the rest of the females) till the moment of his dissolution- his last day was one of graceful exclination- but I should think of little pain, if you can judge of his appearance as a corpse- near did I behold one to divested of all that is painful or horrifying to behold in death. There was a serenity, a placidity, a peaceful slumbering affect in his countenance (when all the authorities staff naval and military went to see the corpse this morning at six) that had a strong effect on everyone who saw him. He was by general and unanimously exclamations, declared the finest corpse ever seen there was something so noble, so dignified in his countenance that a heart of those. Some sketches were afterwards taken, but they are quite below the original. I never saw his face look as handsome (and really you may use the term) no at that moment all the exuberant fat-the jowl, in fact all the superfluous flesh and sallowness had disappeared and left a well proportioned countenance, such as he might have had some twelve or fourteen years ago. A dozen of those who saw him concurred in saying he did not look at the atmost more than forty. I did not certainly, even less I think, his hair though his hair though thin retained its natural dark brown not a wrinkle or the slightest contortion in his face. At the moment I am scribbling the body is opening to find out if possible the disease he died of. It will I think turn out Dispepsy and hepatitis but I shall add it when I know (these terms are familiar to you and I by our former script scratch). He is to be buried with military honours probably tomorrow (as you are aware his corpse was by a second instruction not to be sent home) as a general of the highest rank by the side of the spring near Forbett's Country house below...Whence he had two bottles of fine pur water brought to him by a Chinese every morning (silver bottles) under the shade of a cluster of Weeping Willows, which we have been looking at this forenoon and I do not think a more appropriate spot could have been selected. He fixed upon it himself in the event of being buried here. Maron has requested the spot may be concentrated by our clergy and afterwards by their own priest (Vignali in the old Abbé ...being on his ...house. The night preceding his death an old favorite gum wood tree opposite Montholon's quarters, fell down broken from the root.
