John Ruskin (1819-1900), a signed letter, addressed to 'My dear Sir', giving advice on how best someone with ill health might sojourn in Italy: '...Of Australia I know nothing...The great thing is to keep your mind agreeably employed and not to expose yourself rashly. With precautions - you may obtain almost any climate in Italy you choose, provided you do not allow yourself to be led away by temptation into the shady side of a street, when you know you ought to keep to the sunny one. - I think Italy - take it all in all - an essential country for an invalid...I think the French air exquisite. When you find it getting too cold for you, run to Paris by the railroad and thence to Nice...', 4 pages, on paper with a blind stamp border, trace of mounting, 8voThis appears to have been written on the ill-fated holiday Ruskin spent with his wife Effie and Millais. The party arrived in early July at the hamlet of Brig o'Turk near Stirling, staying first at a hotel, and then in a rented cottage, where the two others, being much in each other's company, fell in love. The elegant writing paper is likely to have originally belonged to Effie.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991) - Collection of Four Production Concept Designs by Hans Bacher - A collection of four original hand-drawn and painted concept designs by celebrated artist Hans Bacher, created during the early development of Disney's Academy Award-winning animated feature Beauty and the Beast.Hans Bacher, a renowned production designer and visual development artist, contributed extensively to some of Disney's greatest animated achievements, including Mulan, Aladdin, Hercules, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit. For Beauty and the Beast, Bacher served as a production consultant and visual development artist, helping shape the film's visual atmosphere and emotional tone. Rarely do such treasures from Disney's "Renaissance" period surface on the open market, original pre-production artworks of this calibre are fiercely sought after and represent an extraordinary opportunity to acquire a piece of Beauty and the Beast's creative journey. This lot includes a hand-painted full character study of Mrs. Potts in her human form dressed in a period costume (dated "4/20/89"); a concept storyboard sheet featuring four different scenic compositions (dated "April 7, 90"); a dual-concept design (one rendered in cold blues and another in earth-toned detail) atmospheric forest settings (dated "3/22/90" and an architectural study of the castle gardens and staircase leading to the fountain (dated "3.90). Each piece is signed and dated by Hans Bacher, and the storyboard sheet features an official Walt Disney Pictures Production Design development stamp. The use of vibrant colour blocking, expressive linework, and mood-driven layouts highlight Bacher's extraordinary ability to influence the atmosphere and pacing long before animation began. These works are not just production artefacts but the foundations of the film's emotional and visual DNA. The lot exhibits some minor marks. Dimensions (largest sheet): 30.5 cm x 21.5 cm (12" x 8.5")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: Ω
ASTERIX CONQUERS AMERICA (1994) - Asterix, Obelix and Multi-Character Original Production Cel and Pan Original Layout Drawing Setup - A richly detailed pan layout setup from the animated feature Asterix Conquers America (aka Asterix In America), expertly composed using seven original hand-painted production cels over a large-format pan background drawing.Asterix Conquers America was the first Asterix film produced entirely outside France and marked an ambitious expansion of the franchise. With its distinctive style, international tone, and strong visual storytelling, it brought the iconic Gauls to a new generation. While this specific arrangement does not appear "as is" in the film, each cel and layout element was created for the production and has been thoughtfully assembled by the studio to showcase the visual dynamism and character design that define the feature. The studio officially released this piece as part of the Asterix Art Program, curated to preserve the series' legacy and offer collectors a rare look into the production process.Set in a Native American village deep in the New World, the artwork brings together an ensemble of key characters: the defiant Asterix stands mid-conversation alongside the wise druid Getafix (Panoramix), recently kidnapped and flung across the ocean by Roman forces. To their side, the young tribal girl, while a wary villager and medicine man, and the elaborately dressed village chief observe from either end, the ever-faithful Obelix acting as both mediator and muscle in the scene. The pencil layout background stretches across, laying out the ceremonial grounds and tipi village in a sweeping perspective. These layouts were integral to shot planning, camera movement, and cel positioning. The scale, clarity, and theatrical composition make this setup an ideal display piece, a scene that captures the drama and charm of the film's aesthetic. Multiple production reference numbers are handwritten along the bottom edge of the cels, and several annotations are written on the drawing. The official studio stamp is present on the bottom right corner of the layout, authenticating its origin. A special offering for fans of the franchise and for collectors who value the immediacy, scale, and storytelling power of original animation art. BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1991) - Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip and Sultan Hand-Painted Cel Setup and Production Background - A hand-painted cel setup featuring the beloved enchanted objects Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and Sultan, the footstool from Walt Disney's animated film Beauty and the Beast, placed over the actual screen-used production background.Although Beauty and the Beast was the first Disney feature to use CAPS (Computer Animation Production System) for final colouring, thereby eliminating the traditional cel painting from the production process, Disney recognised collectors' interest in physical artwork as they have done since the 1930's with supplying the Courvoisier galleries. For the 1992 Sotheby's The Art of Beauty and the Beast auction, 249 unique setups were created, using hand-inked and painted cels based on original animation drawings, carefully matched to actual production backgrounds used in the film. The result: a hybrid of artistry and authenticity, offering collectors the closest experience to owning a piece of the finished film. This lot was part of the Sotheby's auction. This piece is a true collector's piece. Rare, character-rich, and directly tied to the making of an Oscar-winning classic. This scene captures a moment of comic tension and curiosity as Lumiere, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, Chip, and the faithful footstool Sultan peer in horror and amazement. The background here is a masterclass in layout and lighting, with rich burgundy tones, gilded mouldings, and elegant architectural perspective rendered in gouache. The cel characters pop with warmth and vitality, and their lighting effects are carefully considered to match the background's highlights and shadow. A Walt Disney Productions stamp is present on the back of the piece and the lot is accompanied by a The Art of Beauty and the Beast certificate of authenticity. Dimensions: 32 cm x 43.25 cm (12.5" x 17")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: M
DISNEY'S HERCULES (1997) - Pain and Panic Original Concept Drawing - A detailed black pencil concept cleanup drawing featuring Pain and Panic, the mischievous minions of Hades from Walt Disney's Hercules.Due to Hercules being produced during the digital animation era, original pencil drawings like this remain the only tangible, hand-drawn elements used in the creation of the film, offering a rare look at the character development process.Drawn by studio artist Cody Reynolds, this full-figure composition captures the impish energy and contrast between the two characters: Pain's hunched, nervous posture and Panic's wide-eyed, frantic expression, mid-exchange over the Fates' eyeball. The lines are clean and expressive, typical of the refined "cleanup" phase where rough animation is translated into final line art for production reference or potential cel translation. The drawing also features the official Disney copyright red-coloured stamp in the lower right corner. Dimensions: 32 cm x 43.25 cm (12.5" x 17")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: Ω
FANTASIA (1940) - Original Concept Artwork of Centaurettes Bathing Scene from The "Pastoral Symphony" - This original concept artwork from Walt Disney's Fantasia captures one of the film's most ethereal and visually poetic sequences, the centaurettes (or fauns) bathing in the enchanted glen, part of the "Pastoral Symphony" segment inspired by Beethoven's music.Fantasia was an audacious experiment combining high art, classical music, and cutting-edge animation. It redefined what animation could be and became a critical milestone in Disney's artistic legacy. Artwork from this film is exceedingly scarce, particularly finished large-scale concepts like this, as much was lost or discarded after production. The imagery is likely attributed to one of the legendary Disney studio artists of the era, possibly James Bodrero or Martin Provensen, who both worked extensively on the film's development team. Bodrero, in particular, was known for his classical training and brought a European fine art sensibility to the animation process, especially visible in the mythological settings of Fantasia. His pastel and gouache works set the tone for the elegant, dreamlike quality of the "Pastoral Symphony."What makes this piece especially significant is the sheer beauty and size of the composition, designed as part of the film's early visual development. Large-scale concept works like this were crucial to the Disney production process, guiding colour palettes, lighting, and mood before a single cel was painted.Rendered in soft pastels, this artwork radiates the delicate atmosphere, grace, and light that made Fantasia a landmark in the history of animation. The pastel medium was a favourite of the Disney concept artists to create atmospheric depth and emotion. This piece comes with visible pinholes, a telling mark of its original use on studio boards where Walt Disney and his team would have reviewed it. The artwork features the iconic Walt Disney Productions stamp in the bottom right corner, and a filing stamp on the reverse, signed and dated, confirming its place in the production process. Two corners of the paper have degraded, but the lot remains in excellent condition considering its age. Dimensions: 30.5 x 38.5 cm (12" x 15")Sold without copyright; see copyright notice in the Buyer's Guide.VAT Status: †
