The Dale Winfield Motorcycle Collection, The ex-Niall Mackenzie; 1986 Shell Oils British Championship-winning; worksc.1986 Armstrong-CCM 250cc CF250 Racing MotorcycleRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. unstampedEngine no. 192783•Highly advanced British 250-class racer•One of only four made•Sold by the factory to Jim Hodson in 1987•Isle of Man TT historyCCM (Clews Competition Motorcycles) had come into being in 1972 when proprietor Alan Clews purchased the stock of BSA's defunct competitions department. Clews already had plenty of experience in developing his own BSA-based scramblers, and the acquisition enabled him to offer complete machines. Clews finally abandoned the BSA-based design in the early 1980s when automotive equipment suppliers the Armstrong Group took a controlling stake in his company. The rare machine offered here is one of only four 250s produced by Armstrong Competition Motorcycles in the mid-1980s. Armstrong's CF250 Racer was designed by Mike Eatough and made at the CCM factory in Bolton. The frame is a combination of what were then considered 'space age' materials: carbon fibre, aluminium honeycomb and Kevlar. Eatough's moulded twin-spar frame was both strong and very light, the bare frame and swinging arm weighing less than 11lb. Manufactured by Armstrong, the rear suspension unit was mounted under the engine and worked in traction rather than compression. The engine used was the ubiquitous Austrian-built Rotax Type 256 tandem-twin two-stroke, which gave independent manufacturers the opportunity to compete effectively in Grand Prix racing's 250 class from the early 1980s onwards. Cotton, Decorite, EMC, Hejira, Armstrong-CCM and Waddon were among UK manufacturers that used the Rotax engine and there were countless others from Continental Europe, most famously Aprilia. For its two 350-class racers, Armstrong used an engine sourced much closer to home. Basically similar to the Rotax, Armstrong's 350cc tandem twin, disc valve engine was the work of Barry Hart of Barton Engineering, which had also been acquired by Armstrong to assist with the project. Unusually, in Hart's engine the pistons were phased at 180 degrees rather than rising and falling together as in the Rotax. The gearbox was a six-speeder.Sponsored by the Silverstone circuit and entered under the 'Silverstone Armstrong' banner, works riders Niall Mackenzie and Donnie McLeod dominated 250-class racing in the UK with these machines. This bike is the one used by future British Superbike Champion Niall Mackenzie, who rode for the Silverstone Armstrong team in the 1984, 1985 and 1986 seasons, winning the 250 class in the Shell Oils British Championship in '85 and '86 (McLeod had won the championship in 1984). In Grands Prix, though, the two Scots found the going much tougher, the team's best result across three seasons being McLeod's 2nd place in the 250 class at the Belgian GP in 1986. After its spell as a works bike had ended, the ex-Mackenzie machine was sold to privateer Jim Hodson, a prolific Isle of Man TT competitor who made his Manx Grand Prix debut in 1981 and his last TT appearance in 2019. It would appear that Hodson rode this machine in the 1988 and 1989 Junior TT races, being recorded as riding an Armstrong in the former and a CCM in the latter (but almost certainly the same machine). He scored a 'DNF' in 1988 and finished 12th in 1989. Accompanying documentation consists of a typed declaration on CCM-Armstrong headed notepaper stating: 'The machine was sold to Jim Hodson in August 1987 by the Armstrong factory. This machine was raced by Niall Mackenzie during the 1986 racing season, in which it won the British 250cc Championship and finished 22nd in the World Championship.' Bonhams has spoken to members of the Silverstone Armstrong team, including team manager Chas Mortimer and chief mechanic Simon Bleasdale, and they have confirmed that this machine is genuine, correct and the one sold to Hodson. The machine also comes with some photocopied magazine articles. A rare opportunity to own one of the most successful British racing motorcycles of the modern era. The Green House Farm Collection1914 Triumph 550cc Motorcycle CombinationRegistration no. AH 2601Frame no. 2240 MSEngine no. 35942 (see text)•Formerly part of the Murray Motorcycle Museum collection•Purchased in the early 2000s•An older restoration•Successfully completed several Pioneer Runs•Original Triumph Gloria sidecarThe first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine, but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally a bicycle manufacturer founded by German immigrants Siegfried Bettman and Maurice Schulte - was building its own power units. The first of these - a 298cc single-cylinder sidevalve - arrived in 1904. This first engine was not without its weaknesses, pistons and bores wore out quickly and the curious 'tandem down-tube' frame in which it was installed broke, but these shortcomings were soon sorted and within a couple of years 'Triumph' was a byword for reliability. The famous 3½hp model first appeared in 1907. Originally of 453cc, its sidevalve engine was enlarged to 476cc in 1908 and finally to 499cc in 1910 before being superseded by the 550cc 4hp model in 1914. This 4hp Triumph motorcycle combination came from the Murray Motorcycle Museum in the Isle of Man. It was purchased in early 2000s so that the vendor's sons could take part in the Pioneer Run, which they did from ages four to eight years, two at a time sitting in the adapted seating in the sidecar. On purchase, the vendor advises the three-speed rear hub and the engine were overhauled, the latter receiving a new big-end bearing, main bearings, valves and guides, while the magneto was refurbished. It is believed that the wickerwork is all original, and the combination comes with the original cover for the Triumph Gloria sidecar and an umbrella in wicker sheath. An extra brace has been fitted between the motorcycle and sidecar to improve handling. Since restoration 'AH 2601' has completed several London-to-Brighton Pioneer Runs. The machine has been kept in heated, dry storage with all fuel drained and carburettors cleaned following each use. Although not used very often in recent years, it has been periodically started. The vendor is thinning down his collection, hence the reason for sale. Accompanying paperwork consists of a Pioneer Certificate and current V5C. It should be noted that the V5C records the engine number as '35942WVD' (actually '35942'). The combination also comes with a photograph of it completing in an early 1970s Pioneer Run, ridden by early VMCC member Frank Bussey.Key not requiredFootnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Please see the Auction Information and Guide for Buyers at the top of the main sale page, for bidders' obligations. The Green House Farm Collection1910 Triumph 3½hpRegistration no. SV 5777Frame no. 151943Engine no. 7861•Purchased privately c.15 years ago•Engine stripped and rebuilt at time of purchase•Successfully completed a couple of Pioneer RunsThe first Triumph motorcycle of 1902 used a Belgian Minerva engine, but within a few years the Coventry firm - originally a bicycle manufacturer founded by German immigrants Siegfried Bettman and Maurice Schulte - was building its own power units. The company was involved in racing from its earliest days, and the publicity generated by competition successes - Jack Marshall won the 1908 Isle of Man TT's single-cylinder class for Triumph having finished second the previous year - greatly stimulated sales. By the outbreak of The Great War, the marque's reputation for quality and dependability was well-established, leading to substantial orders for 'Trusty Triumphs' for British and Allied forces. Purchased privately, this early Triumph has been in the vendor's collection for c.15 years. Our vendor states that the engine was stripped and rebuilt at time of purchase, receiving new valves, guides and bearings. The machine has completed a couple of Pioneer Runs since the rebuild and was last taxed to 28th February 2015.The machine has been kept in heated, dry storage with all fuel drained and carburettors cleaned following each use. CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH (1868-1928) 'BROOKWEED', 1901 pencil and watercolour, signed and inscribed lower right BROOKWEED/ HOLY ISLAND/ JULY 1901/ MT FB C, framed 22cm x 17cm (frame size 44.5cm x 39.5cm) Provenance: William Marshall, GlasgowScottish Private Collection Exhibited: Edinburgh, London, Darmstadt, Zürich, Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) Architecture, Design and Painting, 1968, Catalogue number 289, lent by William Marshall, Glasgow1901 was a productive and exciting time for Mackintosh professionally, being the year that he was made a partner in the Glaswegian architectural practice where he worked. Seeking some brief respite from his busy roster of commissions, he and his wife Margaret took a holiday to Holy Island in the month of July, joined by the other members of ‘The Four’: Margaret’s sister Frances Macdonald and her husband Herbert McNair, as well as Margaret and Frances’s brother, Charles.Given the trip was for such a short duration, sketches from this excursion are scarce. Nonetheless, the impact of this visit on both Mackintosh’s artistic and architectural practice was marked. For example, the surviving sketches show that he was deeply absorbed by Lindisfarne Castle. It has been noted that its sweeping, austere curves find echoes in his architectural language, for example in the Glasgow School of Art’s design which was completed in phases between 1896 and 1909. Mackintosh had begun to develop his botanical studies in the 1890s, but the series of works from Holy Island are notable in that they crystallize the format for his botanical drawings thereafter. It is here, for example, that he begins to add his distinctive, almost Japanistic ‘cartouche’, featuring the initials of the companions present at the time of the work’s inception. In the past some have implied that the presence of ‘MM’ on such works suggest that Margaret did the colouring, but this does not fit with what is known of his attitude as an artist. Those close to him, notably Mary Sturrock - daughter of his friend and mentor Fra Newbery - are adamant that Mackintosh would not have let his artwork be added to in such a manner. Further support for this can be found in ‘Brookweed’ and other Holy Island watercolours, some of which feature more than two sets of initials. In ‘Brookweed’ the picture is signed M (for Margaret Macdonald), T (Tosh for Mackintosh himself), F (for Frances Macdonald), B (for Herbert (Bertie) McNair), and C (for Charles Macdonald, Margaret and Frances's brother), which appears to confirm the theory that the inscriptions were more of an aide memoire or dedication to those who were present when the pictures were made. Botanic studies were central to Mackintosh’s artistic practise. Even when he was busy with his architectural business, they remain a mainstay. Mackintosh’s ideology had sprung from the tenets of the Arts and Crafts Movement, in tandem with European Art Nouveau, and it is crucial to understand that his design language, whether that be architecturally or artistically, ultimately found its basis in his belief that nature was the source of beauty. His work across all media is characterised by a sinewy, linear approach to form, the distillation of the essential patterns and design of the natural world. This fascinating, alchemical process by which Mackintosh transforms the organic into design is arguably most tangible in his botanical studies, which perhaps explains their enduring appeal. The drawings vary subtly over the course of time. From naturalistic depictions on Holy Island in 1901, to analytical, almost scientific studies in Sintra in 1908. Ultimately a more wholly decorative interest was developed post-1910, enhanced by the fact he is highly likely to have begun pressing his flower stems in order to more clearly expose the decorative formal possibilities. Finally, there was the explosion of botanical studies in Walberswick in 1914 (40 over a period of approximately 12 months), which marked a move from depictions purely of wildflowers to the inclusion of cultivated blooms.Writing for The Studio in 1897, London critic Gleeson White remarked that the work of the ‘Spook School’, “is singularly free from vulgarity of idea, redundance of ornament, and misapplication of material…”. This sentiment holds across all aspects of Mackintosh’s work, but perhaps most particularly his botanical studies. This meeting of classicism and modernity, precision and invention, the spare and the decorative, goes some way to explain the timelessness of these pieces.

[TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, HENRI DE]GEOFFROY, J. Nouveau Dictionnaire Éleméntaire. Latin-Français. Paris: Jules Delalain et Fils, 1873. The copy of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, was used by him while studying for his baccalaureate. Contemporary drab buckram, inscribed on the cover: "H. de Toulouse-Lautrec. Dictionnaire Latin | T.L"; housed in a modern pigskin case. 8 5/8 x 5 1/2 inches (22 x 14 cm); viii, 534 pp.; with roughly 440 pen-and-ink drawings by Lautrec on approximately 110 pages, including the endpapers, title-page, and the margins of text pages, executed about 1878-81. Rebacked, resewn, the hinges neatly restored along the gutter of the endpapers; one or two minor tears, small, neat repairs to a few leaves.Toulouse-Lautrec's Latin-French dictionary is enhanced with hundreds of delicate pen and ink drawings, drawn while he studied for his baccalauréat. The sixteen-year-old first sat for the exam, for which a working knowledge of Latin was an essential and integral part, in 1880. After initially failing, he retook it in 1881, and this time he passed. During his studies, the young artist decorated the margins of his dictionary with sketches, many of which demonstrate skills reaching far beyond the doodles of a bored schoolboy. Toulouse-Lautrec was already studying art, having received informal instruction from Charles de Toulouse-Lautrec, his uncle, and (from a young age) the painter René Princeteau, a friend of his father. Princeteau, a brilliant painter of animals, especially horses, was the subject of at least two 1881 paintings by Henri.Horses were a lifelong passion for Toulouse-Lautrec, and his diminutive stature may have resulted (at least in part) from two bad falls (with resulting broken legs) he took while riding while still a young man. Many of his earliest paintings feature them (his powerful work The White Horse "Gazelle" was painted in 1881, around the time he made the drawings here) and they remained an enduring fascination, and a source of some of his most compelling images, throughout his brief life. The playful sketches that populate these pages include many lively, compelling drawings of the animals, and it is these, perhaps more than any other theme, that draw the eye. Writing about this book in 1955, Aldous Huxley observed "... when the learned foolery of grammar and versification became unbearable, he would ... dip his pen in the ink and draw a tiny masterpiece. Dictionnaire Latin-Français. Above the words is a cavalryman galloping to the left, a jockey walking his horse towards the right. Coetus and Cohaerentia are topped by a pair of horse's hoofs, glimpsed from the back as the animal canters past. Two pages of the preface are made beautiful, the first by an unusually large drawing of a tired old nag, the second by a no less powerful version of the three horses in tandem which adorned the flyleaf." On the front pastedown, two quatrains in Toulouse-Lautrec's elegant script appear among the drawings. The first reads "Si tente de demon, Tu derobes ce livre, Apprends que tout fripon, Est indigne à vivre" (If, driven by a demon, you steal this book, know that no rascal merits to live); a second verse, written in alternating Latin and French, appears below a drawing of a pierrot hanged on a gallows, saluted by a dapper gentleman in a top hat. Translated, the verse reads, "Look at Pierrot hanged, who did not return the book; if he returned it, he would not have been hanged."This is believed to be the only surviving school book thus decorated by the youthful Toulouse-Lautrec. Huxley wrote glowingly of it: "Even as a boy, as yet completely ignorant of the masters under whose influence his mature style was to be formed, Houku-sai, Degas, Goya, even in the margins of his Latin dictionary he was making manifest the vitalizing spirit in the movements of life."Literature:A. Huxley, "Toulouse-Lautrec: Reality Revisited with the Amoral Eye", Esquire, September 1955 Centenaire de Toulouse-Lautrec, J. Bouchot-Saupique, Albi, Palais de la Berbie, 1964 Paris, Réunion des musées nationaux, 1964 La Revue du Louvre et des musées de France, vol. 26, 1976, p. 453, no. 20.Provenance:Jake Zeitlin, c.f. the Huxley article cited above Sale: Geneva, June 13-15, 1960, lot 539Sale: Sotheby's, New York, December 11, 1990, lot 481, sold $165,000Jay I. Registration No: 117 UYM Chassis No: 77451 MOT: ExemptSubject to a full bodywork restoration by the current vendorOffered with a collection of photographs of the restorationOffered from long term ownershipA unique opportunity for bubble car aficionados everywhereIntroduced in 1953 as the 'fend', after its co-designer Fritz Fend, the KR175 Kabinenroller (scooter with cabin) was soon marketed under the more famous Messerschmitt name. The narrow body and corresponding low frontal area was achieved with tandem seating and handlebar controls which also allowed the body to taper like an aircraft fuselage. Powered by a two-stroke 148cc Fichtel & Sachs engine that produced a modest 9bhp, the fuel consumption was reported to be 87mpg with a top speed of 55mph. In 1955, an improved KR200 was introduced with a larger 191cc engine, revised bodywork, an improved turning circle and floor-mounted accelerator and clutch. The tandem seating allowed centralised weight distribution irrespective of occupants, avoiding the flawed logic of the Isetta's lop-sided engine arrangement, and providing the little tricycle with handling characteristics that outclassed its contemporaries. Four forward and four reverse gears made for rapid progress in either direction with a top speed of 62mph. Available in the UK from 1955 onwards, production ceased in 1964 after some 30,000 KR200s had been built.Interest in 'micro cars' has been on the rise for some time, of which many view the tandem seat Messerschmitts as the cream of the crop. This delightful KR200 originally arrived in the UK via rail through Germany and Belgium. Becoming well known in club circles during its early days, ‘117 UYM’ was then off the road for some forty years. Subsequently treated to a comprehensive restoration using only original and club-supplied parts, the Messerschmitt had its engine and transmission overhauled by a club specialist and its body reconfigured as a Convertible. The vendor informs us that the Messerschmitt is now 'very presentable and drives really well', and is offering it complete with a copy of the original sales invoice, club certificate of origin and numerous restoration photographs. K200s are powered by a 191cc Fichtel & Sachs single-cylinder two stroke engine which, thanks to the model's low weight and effective aerodynamics, will propel the little two-seater to c.60mph - which it can attain both forwards and backwards! ITEM: Fishing hookMATERIAL: BronzeCULTURE: RomanPERIOD: 1st - 3rd Century A.DDIMENSIONS: 75 mm x 42 mmCONDITION: Good conditionPROVENANCE: Ex European private collection, Ex Galerie Bader (1976), Ex private collection, M.E.S., SwitzerlandComes with Certificate of Authenticity and Export Licence. These hooks were made primarily from metal, such as bronze, iron, or occasionally steel, and were designed with a sharp, curved end to catch fish effectively. Roman fishing hooks varied in size depending on the type of fish they were intended to catch, from small hooks for freshwater species to larger ones used in saltwater fishing. They were often part of a larger fishing kit that might also include nets, lines, and weights, enabling both leisure and commercial fishing across the Roman Empire.Fishing was an important activity in Roman society, particularly in coastal areas and around rivers where fish were abundant and a significant part of the Roman diet. Romans used these hooks not only for personal sustenance but also for trade, as fish was a popular commodity in markets throughout the empire. Large-scale commercial fishing, especially in the Mediterranean, employed these hooks in tandem with other tools such as tridents and larger nets. Archaeological evidence suggests that fishing was not just a rural activity but also part of urban life, with fish being a key ingredient in Roman feasts and banquets. Roman fishmongers, who sold fresh fish, often relied on efficient fishing methods that included hooks and other specialized equipment. The design of Roman fishing hooks varied over time and by region, with some hooks featuring intricate decorations or inscriptions, reflecting the influence of Roman culture and artistic traditions. Some examples found in archaeological digs are simple, with a single curved barb, while others are more ornate, showcasing local craftsmanship. Fishing hooks were sometimes made in the shape of fish or animals, serving both a functional and symbolic purpose. In addition to their practical use in fishing, hooks may have had a symbolic significance in Roman culture, representing themes of abundance or connection to nature.

Bacqueville, PARIS - 1895 to lower margin, the heavy cast gilt brass bevel-glazed cariatides case of Mignonette No. 2 size with rosette-centred acanthus scroll cast hinged carrying handle over thick glass set within generous repeating acanthus cast surround to top, above ogee-shaped lappet leaf cast cornice and canted corner uprights cast as Classical female terms, the rear with pin-hinged door and on conforming lappet-leaf ogee skirt base with pad feet.8.3cm (3.25ins) high with handle down, 6cm (2.625ins) wide, 5cm (2ins) deep. G. Bacqueville of Paris does not appear to be recorded in the usual sources however other decorative clocks (dating to the end of the 19th century) signed by him are known. The use of tandem barrel to drive both the going and strike trains, together with the provision of a silvered high-quality silvered platform jewelled escapement, suggests that the movement of the present clock may well be of Swiss manufacture. Hence would have most likely been supplied to Bacqueville for casing and retail in Paris. Miniature carriage clocks are called Mignonettes or 'little darlings' and come in three graded sizes with No. 1 being the smallest. Condition Report: The movement is in relatively clean fully working condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The hour hand is a little out of position (reading around one minute division ahead) hence would benefit from adjustment. Dial is free from any visible defects although the silvering to the mask is has slight overall oxidation giving a nice mellow colour to the silvered finish. The case is in very good original condition with no visible crack/chips or other defects to the glass and light to moderated wear to the gilding (most noticeable to the frame of the rear door).Clock is complete with a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

Attributed to Adam de Colone, Dutch 1572-1651- Portrait of John Hay, 8th Lord Hay of Yester, later 1st Earl of Tweeddale, half-length, in a black and white slashed doublet and white lace collar; oil on canvas, dated 'AETATIS. 33 / 1628' (upper left), 64.2 x 55.4 cm. Provenance: The Marquess' of Tweeddale, Yester House, East Lothian and by descent. 'The Most Hon. The Dowager Marchioness of Tweeddale and the Trustees of the Most Hon. the late Marquess of Tweeddale' sale, Christie's, London, 1 May 1970, lot 45 (as 'G. Jackson'), £178.10. Property of the late Hugo Morley-Fletcher, MA FSA (1940-2022). Exhibited: Edinburgh, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, ‘Painting in Scotland 1570-1650’, August-September 1975, no.52 (as 'Adam de Colone'). Literature: J. Bullock, 'George Jamesone the Scottish Vandyck', Edinburgh, 1885, p.182, no.182, as 'George Jameson'. D. Thomson, 'The Life and Art of George Jamesone', Oxford, 1974, under Appendix B, 'Portraits attributed to Adam de Colone', p.149, no.22, as 'George Jameson'.  Note: John Hay, 1st Earl of Tweedale (1595-1654) was a leading promoter of the National Covenant, an agreement signed by many people of Scotland during 1638, opposing the proposed reforms of the Church of Scotland (also known as the Kirk) by King Charles I. He was made an Earl in 1646. ‘Attributed to Jamesone by Bullock. Like its companion [Portrait of Margaret Hay], it has more recently borne an attribution to Gilbert Jackson. It has, however, none of that painter's characteristic naiveté: it does have many of those features which have been noted as characteristic of de Colone and is by the same hand as… above. Lord Hay of Yester, though a signatory to the Solemn League and Covenant, remained acceptable to Charles I and was created Earl of Tweeddale in 1646.’ (Scottish National Portrait Gallery, ‘Painting in Scotland 1570-1650’ exhibition catalogue, p.55). The sitter would have been an important sitter for the artist. He was - as part of the interconnected Scottish network of patrons and just as part of the wider Hay family - cousins with George Hay, Earl of Kinnoull, who sat to Adam de Colone, who in turn produced two portrait types of him, and Anne Hay, Countess of Winton, who sat to the artist at least twice. Adam de Colone clearly employed at least one studio assistant. While he wasn’t in the British Isles for long, there are versions of his full-length depiction of James VI and I (at full-length, three-quarter-length and half-length) that appear to be painted with the assistance of another hand, to meet the demand for copies of this particular composition. It is entirely possible therefore that the present lot was painted by both Adam de Colone and a studio assistant. The present work would have been a one-off composition of an important sitter and so it would have been very unlikely if the master was not involved in its production at all. A note on the collection:The following 14 lots belonged to the late Hugo Morley-Fletcher, the great European Ceramics specialist who worked at Christie’s for over 40 years and appeared on the BBC’s 'Antiques Roadshow' for over 25 years.Hugo was born in 1940 and spent the Second World War in his mother’s family’s ancestral home, Yester House near Edinburgh. Yester was built between 1699 and 1728 for the Marquesses of Tweeddale. In 1729 the 4th Marquess commissioned William Adam to carry out alterations, particularly to the interiors, but William died before the work was completed, and it wasn’t until his sons Robert and John Adam resumed work on it in 1759 that it was completed in the early 1760s. Yester is one of Scotland’s finest houses and its architecture, plasterwork and contents had a profound impact upon Hugo. His mother was also a talented sculptor, so art was in his blood. Shortly after his grandfather the 11th Marquess died in the late 1960s, the house was sold, along with a lot of the contents.Hugo had his own rather eccentric aristocratic style and sense of panache in tandem with an unerring confidence; this was off-putting to some, but utterly captivating to others. Working with Hugo at Christie’s was, at times, a little challenging, but it was certainly never dull. He loved wearing his green 'loden' cape that he had bought in Vienna, yet paradoxically, Hugo always retained his sense of Britishness. On one occasion, over 20 years ago, when we were in a tiny railway station in the middle of nowhere in Germany, we were struggling to get a ticket machine to work when a local kindly intervened to help. He then asked if we had been there the previous year. When we confirmed that we had, and asked why he asked, he replied that he remembered Hugo’s red socks!Hugo had a natural eye for art, frequently cutting straight to the key points of an object. His understanding extended beyond ceramics to encompass pictures and other decorative arts, and he had the ability to identify the best artwork in a room filled with things, whether it was ceramic or something different. He had a prodigious memory, priding himself in his ability to memorise the position of objects within a client’s house and retain that memory many years after the visit. He also had the ability to give a summary value of a collection after only the briefest of visits. He was often generous with his knowledge, but on other occasions would withhold it as a test. The study groups of saucers and small objects in this sale illustrate some of the fascinating complexities found in ceramics, and they would be an excellent vehicle for teaching.Hugo was a fine linguist and was completely untroubled by taking auctions in a variety of different languages. He also had a natural curiosity and understanding of other cultures, and Continental friends and clients were frequently surprised and impressed by his knowledge of both their history and current affairs, which often surpassed their own. His almost encyclopaedic knowledge of Royal and aristocratic families in Britain and the Continent meant that he understood how these families and historical events shaped the creation of ceramics of time, and as he once reminded me, with the creation of ceramics, ‘there is always someone writing a cheque’.Hugo was a tour-de-force in the ceramics world, publishing a number of specialist books included 'Investing in English Pottery and Porcelain' (1968), Meissen (1970), 'Meissen in Colour' (1971) and the 'Pflueger collection of Early European Porcelain and Faience' (1994). When he joined Christie’s in 1963 the market was dominated by Sotheby’s under the auspices of the great Tim Clarke. By the 1970s Hugo had reversed this. Two of the iconic sales of the 1970s were a highly important collection which was sold anonymously in March and October 1977, making a huge amount of money at the time. These were followed by many others.Later in his life Hugo became Prime Warden of the Worshipful Company of Dyers in the City of London which ushered in his charitable work with the Boucher Church of England Primary School, a disadvantaged school in East London. Hugo gave lessons in French and Latin, and in particular he was keen to promote reading, instigating the practice of the Dyers to donate a book to every pupil of the school each year.Text courtesy of Dominic Simpson, Consultant and former Head of European Ceramics at Christie’s.
