An Early XX Century Tantalus, the oak case with lift-up top and two doors opening to reveal three square cut glass decanters and stoppers, glasses in the door, the lower drawer containing playing cards, 32cm high.Glasses in good condition. Decanters and stoppers with small chips. Both handles absent. Some small nicks to outside. No key. Wear commensurate with age. Stoppers all appear to be the same and fit well into decanter.
A George III burr oak veneered and brass bound tantalus containing four cut lead crystal decanters with gilt brass collars and cut glass stoppers with original matching set of six liqueur glasses of barrel form on an integral tooled and gilded red leather stand to match leather of interior of lid, 18.5 cm wide x 18 cm deep x 21.5 cm high CONDITION REPORTS Wood is quite dry and in need of a polish. There is some cracking to the veneer on the top. There are some small losses to the veneer on the inside front ledge just above the lock although these bits appear to be present in one of the glasses. We have not shut the lid fully as the key is not present and we don't want to get it locked shut. The leather interior has wear throughout although numbers still evident to the bases of the decanter sections. Signs of mildew type marks. Two of the stoppers appear to be replacements although match the other two in design, are slightly different and look newer. The decanters themselves have the odd heavy scratch and one decanter in particular has some marks to one side centre main body. The other three decanters are numbered 1, 3 and 4 to the shoulders. Another of the decanters marked 1 has got some green like residue throughout into the inside. All items are in need of a good clean. The metal mounts have some marks/scratching to them. The glasses all match - unknown if original. One is a slightly smaller size to the others and the leather glass holder has significant wear and in need of a good clean. The piece is in an original state, has not been renovated recently. There is a split to the wood on the liqueur glass holder. Wear and tear conducive with age and use etc - see images for more details

Three Bristol blue bottlesin papier mache stand/tantalus, on bun feet, 'Rum', 'Brandy' and 'Hollands', with gilt highlighted decoration, bottles 23cm high approx overall Stand is wobbly. Some chips and losses to the stoppers and bottles in places. Scratches and signs of age, wear and use. Crazing to the stand.
A Victorian Silver Plate Three-Bottle Tantalus, Late 19th Century, of typical form, engraved with initials 'JB' within a foliate wreath, with three cut-glass bottles and key, 33cm wideMarked underneath with maker's mark NS or SN with a fleur-de-lys (?) between. Further numbered 10522. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the plating in places and to the engraving. Probably re-plated. There are lead solder repairs above each foot. The key is present and when unlocked one side of the frame opens to allow the bottles to be tilted and removed. There are chips to the bottles, particularly to the rim of one which has large chips. Engraved with initials 'JB'.

Goltzius, Hendrick -- Die vier Himmelsstürmer: Tantalus, Ikarus, Phaeton und Ixion. 4 Kupferstiche im Rund nach Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem. Je ca. D. 31,5 cm. (1588). B. 258-261, Hollstein 306-309, Leesberg (New Hollstein) 325 wohl I-III (von III), 326, 327 II, 328. Wz. Wappen mit Fleurs-de-lis. Die vier spektakulären Darstellungen sind das Resultat einer kurzen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Hendrick Goltzius und Cornelis Cornelisz. van Haarlem; sie folgen heute nicht mehr erhaltenen Grisaille-Gemälden des Cornelis. Die Folge zeigt die sogenannten Himmelsstürmer Tantalus, Ikarus, Phaeton und Ixion wie sie, zwei in der Sonne, zwei in der Dunkelheit, durch die Lüfte wirbeln. Allen vier Figuren gemein ist der Versuch in das Reich der Götter zu gelangen, doch "fallen" sie schließlich wortwörtlich ihrer Hybris zum Opfer. Ausgezeichnete bis ganz ausgezeichnete Drucke jeweils bis an die Darstellung bzw. die runde Einfassungslinie geschnitten, ohne den umlaufenden Schriftrand, weshalb sich insbesondere beim ersten Blatt der Druckzustand nicht bestimmen lässt, sonst jeweils mit der Nummer. Teils leicht fleckig und angestaubt, sämtlich mit geglätteten Falz- und Knickspuren verso, Tantalus zusätzlich mit leichten Knitterspuren, ausgebesserte Randläsuren sowie hinterlegte Randeinrisse bzw. Brüche, weitere hinterlegte Erhaltungsmängel, die Figur in der Silhouette punktiert, Ikarus mit ausgebesserten Randläsuren, rechts ergänzte Fehlstelle, unten eine kleine, Phaeton mit Faltspuren jeweils oben und unten gesprungen und hinterlegt, ausgebesserte Randschäden, dort teils mit kleinen ergänzten Stellen, Ixion mit kleinen geschlossenen Randschäden, oben kleine Ergänzung, sämtlich in ein Fenster-Passepartout montiert, sonst insgesamt in einheitlicher Erhaltung.
