Bezeichnung: Signiert unten rechts: S im Rhombus.Rahmen: Rahmen. Rückseitig:Auf der Tafel Stempel und Etikett des Künstlerbedarfshandels Richard Wurm, München. Sowie auf dem Rahmen Angaben zu Vorbesitzern.Literatur:S. Wichmann: Carl Spitzweg. Registration – GAC 604CChassis No. – P1A10023.B.WM.O.T. – ExemptOdometer – 87,136‘GAC 604C’ hails from 1965 and so is a pre-facelift example of the Daimler saloon, delineating it as the “2.5 V8” which would be renamed the “V8-250” at a later point. The 2.5 V8 was the first Jaguar designed car to wear a Daimler badge, basically being a re-branded MKII Jaguar saloon. ‘GAC 604C’ is a twelve former keeper car with the current vendor owning it for around 4 years or so. ‘GAC 604C’s’ odometer shows a recorded 87,136 miles which appears to be supported by the MOT history. This also suggests that the Daimler has covered less than 50 miles since 2010. ‘GAC 604C’ is classified as an Historic Vehicle and so is MOT exempt and zero rated for road tax. The Daimler was last MOT’d in 2019, comes from the large collection of an individual enthusiast, and is offered here with a history file and NO RESERVE.‘GAC 604C’ presents in the eye-catching and less common Opalescent Silver Blue livery with plenty of chromed brightwork to the radiator, bumpers and window surrounds. The Daimler is easily differentiated from its Jaguar cousin by the signature fluted radiator surround and boot trim piece. ‘GAC 604C’ sits on a desirable set of chromed, cross spoked wheels affixed with twin eared centre spinners complete with an embossed Daimler “D.” The luxurious cabin is finished in grey leather with blue carpets and plenty of wood veneer. The seats are heavily patinaed with the odd split and tear noted in places. Even the original push button radio is present, underlining the delightful originality of this example. The innovative 2.5-litre V8, Edward Turner designed engine fitted to is ‘GAC 604C’ one of the smallest production V8s ever produced. It is renowned for its smooth running as well as offering a great performance to economy ratio for a relatively heavy luxury saloon. ‘GAC 604C’ is fitted with a three speed Borg Warner automatic transmission with a column mounted gear change lever. Documents in the paperwork archive point to an earlier engine rebuild. In summary:The subject of an earlier engine rebuild reportedlyOffered in a desirable blue livery with a light grey interiorMOT exempt and zero rated for road tax

Lot 14

Registration – JWR 690Chassis No. – B.299.EWM.O.T. – ExemptOdometer – 19,614‘JWR690’ is a genuinely rare example of a watershed model for Bentley. What is more, this example is notable for wearing a bespoke HJ Mulliner body in aluminium as opposed to the standard (actually slightly substandard post-war, rationed) steel that most left Crewe clad in. Only around 100 were believed to have been given the lightweight Mulliner treatment. ‘JWR690’ was enjoyed by just four keepers during the first 62 years of its existence. The fourth owner undertook a full restoration of ‘JWR690’ between 2003 and 2008 addressing all aspects of the Bentley including a full, bare metal respray. The fifth keeper bought ‘JWR690’ in 2012 and the current keeper acquired it in 2020 to become just its sixth in 76 years. ‘JWR690’ comes with plenty of provenance providing paperwork and restoration photographs and is exempt from MOT and zero rated for road tax. This remarkable Mulliner bodied Bentley is offered here with NO RESERVE.The MK VI Bentley was the first postwar car for the marque and became hugely popular with over 5,200 produced between 1946 and 1952. The standard cars were steel bodied with the only material available at the time not necessarily up to normal Bentley standards. Just twenty percent of production was produced in rolling chassis form before going on to a number of independent coachbuilders to have bespoke bodies fitted. Around 100 only arrived at Mulliner. Mulliner’s wartime experience led them to perfect superb aluminium bodies which were much lighter, stiffer and offered better longevity than their steel counterparts. ‘JWR690’ is one of those chosen few making it rare indeed. Finished in bright silver and exhibiting a dramatic front end and curvaceous wings, ‘JWR690’ is a definite head turner. The sublime interior is a haven of oxblood hued leathers and copious amounts of inlaid walnut veneer. The paintwork, bodywork and interior are all rated as “average to good.”‘JWR690’ is fitted with the so called 4 ¼ Litre engine which is a 4257cc straight six unit with an F-head and twin SU carburettors. The company didn’t disclose the car’s power output a number of road tests achieved top speeds very close to 100mph. All MK VI Bentleys were fitted with a four speed manual transmission with the gear lever on the right of the driver. The engine, transmission and electrics are all rated as “good.” In summary:One of just 100 or so Mulliner bodied examples known to be madeSubject to a 5-year diligent restoration in the early 2000’s including a full resprayA lightweight version of the car thanks to the crafted aluminium body

▲ Philip Turner (1918-1997), 'Perching', bronze, numbered '1/4', on a Perspex cube, 63cm high overall Provenance: The Reid Gallery, London, 1964. Born in Sussex in 1918, British sculptor Philip Turner was educated at Marlborough College, before commencing his studies at St Martin’s School of Art in 1936. Later, he would study the basics of painting and sculpting under the tutelage of British sculptor Leon Underwood, and in 1948, would receive a Diploma of Fine Art from the Slade. Turner is credited as one of the first post-war sculptors to employ casting as a means in and of itself to create the final form, and was known to be an expert authority on bronze pouring to his colleagues. Turner had an uneasy relationship with mass-production and would take care to finish each piece by hand, welding, grinding, flaming and polishing, to produce similar, but never identical, forms. Unlike many of his contemporaries, who chose to depict man as tortured and anxious, Turner, who described his role as artist as something between oracle and entertainer, used wit, irony and optimism in his representations.

WILLIAM JOSEPH JULIUS CAESAR BOND (1833-1926) Boats on the Water, church steeple beyond, Galway Oil on canvas, 74 x 102cm Signed and dated 1850, lower rightWilliam Joseph Julius Caeser Bond, otherwise known as ‘Alphabet Bond’ was a well-regarded English landscape and marine painter and member of the Liverpool Academy in the 19th century. Bond began quite humbly as the son of a post-office clerk and trained in the art of picture restoration and cleaning before taking up painting on the advice of local tobacco merchant and collector John Miller who had admired some of his Liverpool dock sketches. As referenced in Denys Brook- Hart’s comprehensive book on the subject entitled ‘British 19th Century Marine Painting’, Bond forged a rather illustrious career in the North of the country, earning the moniker ‘The Turner of the North’ as his later style favoured the semi-impressionistic style and warm palette associated with the London born artist. This painting presented is identified as quite an early work by the artist by both the date of 1850 and the decidedly tighter use of brushstrokes and attention to detail. The scene presented is certainly one of Bond’s lesser-known examples as it depicts the Woodquay area of Galway city, specifically ‘Sickeen’, now familiar to the viewer as St. Brendan’s Avenue. Silhouetted in the background we see the spire of St. Nicholas’s Collegiate Church as it was in 1850 before it was rebuilt and furnished with a clock in 1883 and to the right the Franciscan Abbey built earlier in the 19th century. An assemblage of squat straw-thatched cottages smoke gently in the midground, of which nothing remains today. Bearing in mind that the scene painted was produced during the Great Famine and before the re-development of the city it serves as a valuable record of the urban landscape in the mid-nineteenth century, of which there are few visual records.
