The latter example is now generally attributed to Domenichino's follower Pietro Paolo Bonzi. Whilst the present work has been put forward as the prime version by Luigi Salerno and others (see literature), Stephane Loire and Dennis Mahon both argued that the Louvre version is the original. Condition Report: Canvas appears to have a wax relining and presents a subtle craquelure. In addition, there are a few slight superficial scratches in the varnish in the tree in the upper right corner and the lower left corner UV light reveals and evenly applied varnish a few retouches in the lower section of the waterfall as well as meticulous restoration in the sky with two patches of approx 4cm in width. In addition, there are a few small meticulous restorations in the foliage of the tree to the right. Finally, there is extensive restoration to the right border such restoration if of crosses the whole right border and is of about 4cm in width.Condition Report Disclaimer

FAURÉ GABRIEL: (1845-1924) French Composer. A.L.S., Gabriel Fauré, two pages, 12mo card, n.p. [Paris], n.d., on his professional printed stationery card, as Director of the National Conservatory, to a friend, in French. Fauré refers to the musical contents to take place in the month of July, stating `Pour vous faire venir le plus tard possible, je ne vous avais pas inscrit aux Concours de Chant du 2 et 3 Juillet, mais seulement aux concours du 4 (violonchelle...), du 6 (piano femmes), du 8 (violon), et du 11 (opéra). Excusez-moi donc, cher ami...´ (Translation: "In order to make you come as late as possible, I did not register you for the Singing Contents of July 2nd and 3rd, but only for the contents of the 4th (cello, viola, bass), the 6th (women's piano), the 8th (violin), and the 11th (opera). Die Identifizierung mit Georg Friedrich Händel, die sich handschriftlich auf einem auf der Rückseite angebrachten Klebezettel findet („vermutlich Haendl [sic!]“, ist jedoch eher abwegig. Händel hielt sich zwar ab 1710 in London auf, wäre jedoch mit einem Cembalo oder einer Orgel dargestellt worden, während hier auf den Notenblättern eine Flöte liegt und an der Rückwand eine Viola da Gamba hängt. Unter den zeitweise in Großbritannien tätigen Flötisten ist Gottfried Finger (um 1660-1730) vielleicht der bekannteste. Er arbeitete zunächst am Hof des Fürstbischofs von Olmütz sowie ab 1682 in München. Drei Jahre später wurde er in die Hofkapelle König Jakob II. aufgenommen und erlangte in England als Geoffrey Finger einige Berühmtheit. Der auch als Komponist tätige Finger blieb bis 1701 in England, bevor er auf den Kontinent zurückkehrte und u.a. in Berlin und am Pfälzer Hof tätig war. Sollte es sich um ein Porträt von Gottfried Finger handeln, verweist das Notenblatt mit dem Titel „Anthem“ wohl auf seinen erfolgreichen Aufenthalt in England.

A German violaLate 19th/early 20th century, unlabelled, back 390mm (15.5 inch), scale 350mm, with two bows and a hard case.Provenance:Property of a former player in the Leicester Symphony Orchestra, thence by descent.Condition:Playable with some minor recommissioning.  Signs of age and use throughout.  Old splits to the top between the right F hole and the tail.  Crack to the right lower bout with signs of repair.  Split to right upper bout with signs of repair.  Old split to back adjacent to the saddle.  Small dents/chips to purfling in places.

Condition - fair Light surface scratches top and bottom; some wear to varnish at underside; tailpiece is a plastic replacement; wear to underside of neck; one tuning peg replaced, one peg missing inset mother of pearl finial; no repairs or worm seen. Case cover with a split; and other faults.
