CHARLES X: (1757-1836) King of France 1824-30. Brief A.L.S., Charles Philippe, one page, 4to, Paris, 1st May n.y. (1814), to an unidentified correspondent, in French. The King states, in full, `The King´s entry into Paris is positively fixed for next Tuesday at ten in the morning.´ With blank integral leaf. Some very light, minor wrinkling to the right edge and light overall age toning, otherwise VG The present letter is written at an important date in the Bourbon Restoration. In January 1814, Charles covertly left his home in London to join the Coalition forces in southern France. His brother Louis XVIII, by then wheelchair-bound and in exile in England, supplied Charles, his younger brother, with letters patent creating him Lieutenant General of the kingdom. On 31st March, the Allies captured Paris and a few days later, on 4th April, Napoleon I abdicated. The Senate declared King Louis XVIII restored. Charles had arrived in the capital on 12th April and acted as Lieutenant General of the kingdom until Louis XVIII arrived from England. Two days after the present letter was written, on 3rd May, the King was greeted with great rejoicing from the Parisians and proceeded to occupy the Tuileries Palace. Charles X, known as the Count of Artois for much of his life, reigned as the last Bourbon King of France from 1824-30. An uncle of the uncrowned King Louis XVII and the younger brother of reigning Kings Louis XVI and Louis XVIII, Charles supported the latter in exile and eventually succeeded him. During his brief tenure as regent, Charles created an ultra-royalist secret police that reported directly back to him without Louis XVIII's knowledge. It operated for over five years. His rule of almost six years ended in the July Revolution of 1830, which resulted in his abdication and the election of Louis Philippe, Duke of Orleans, as King of the French.

As for me, the address above tells you that I am once again having problems with my veins. It will soon be 70 years since my legs gave way. I understand that they are tired, but I am fighting to avoid ending my life in a wheelchair. And I know from experience that the water here has miraculous properties. I hope that this time it will not disappoint me. I have come to spend the summer at the rest home. The first time I came back, I almost didn't stay. This house and garden are really full of memories for me!´), further stating ´Ma fille est restée quelques semaines. My daughter stayed for a few weeks. I also had a visit from my grandson, a philosophy graduate, whom I like very much. But I'm going back to the south as soon as my treatment is over, and I'm looking forward to it! It is still there that life is most bearable for me = solitude and work. But we grow old quickly (and faster and faster once we start to age) and work is not what it used to be´) and concluding by writing ´Cher ami, vous me ferez plaisir en me dornnant un petit signe d´amitié. Parlez-moi de votre santé, de vos affaires. Je suis heureux pour vous que vous ne soyez pas seul, que vous vous sentiez entouré d´affection et de soins´ (Translation: ´Dear friend, you will make me happy by sending me a little sign of friendship. An interesting autograph book containing many signatures, photographs and letters, including a signed photograph and accompanying letter from Adolf Hitler, the photograph dated 26-4-39, the letter 21-03-1939, other signatures including Robert Taylor, Ivor Novello, Anthony Eden, Cary Grant, Cosmo Lang and Noel Coward.Provenance: The original owner of the autograph book was Joan Towersey. She was born in the 1920s and as a child wore callipers before being confined to a wheelchair. As a hobby she wrote to many famous people hoping to receive photographs and signatures in return and this is how she obtained all the autographs within this book including those of Adolf Hitler. The vendor's grandfather was a policeman in Croydon and was so worried that if anybody saw the album they would be deemed to be sympathisers with the Third Reich cause that the book spent the war locked in the police station safe. The book was handed to the vendor's mother after his aunt passed away and then in turn to the current vendor.

The Dale Winfield Motorcycle Collection, Ex-Eddie Kidd, OBE1985 Yamaha YZ490 Stunt BikeRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. 57H-000813Engine no. 57H-000813•Jumped all around the world•World Record-setting machine•Present ownership since 1993•Authenticating documentArguably the UK's greatest motorcycle stunt performer of all time, Eddie Kidd enjoyed a stellar career for some 20 years before a tragic accident while performing a jump left him paralysed and suffering from brain damage. Having started his career aged fourteen, Eddie set numerous world records for jumping over rows of cars and buses, as well as acting as a stunt double in many movies. In the latter role he has doubled for Timothy Dalton in The Living Daylights; Pierce Brosnan in Goldeneye; Roger Moore and Michael Caine in Bullseye!; Harrison Ford in Hanover Street; and Val Kilmer in Top Secret. In 1993 Kidd jumped over the Great Wall of China on a motorcycle. The Yamaha moto-crosser offered here was taken to China for that jump, but Eddie elected to perform the stunt on another machine. While performing at the Bulldog Bash event in August 1996, Eddie had to jump a distance of 49 feet across a drag strip, a relatively insignificant ask for someone of his calibre. Although he completed the jump successfully, Eddie was knocked unconscious on landing and lost control as a result, ending up going over a 20 foot high embankment. He sustained serious head and pelvic injuries and did not regain consciousness until three months later. Since then Eddie has taken part in the 2011 London Marathon, completing the course in six weeks having discarded his wheelchair at the start. In July 2012 he was one of a select few chosen to carry the Olympic Torch during its journey to London; this was shortly after he had been awarded an OBE in HM The Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to charity. This Yamaha comes with an undated authenticating document, signed by Eddie Kidd, stating: 'This bike has been jumped all around the world i.e. Japan, China, America, Sweden, France, Australia.' He goes on to list its following notable achievements:198910 trucks, Tring, GB1989100 foot bonfire, Epping Forest, GB (World Record)1990140 foot jump, Japan, first ever, watched by 35 million viewers1991120 foot fountain, Toulouse, France19928 buses, no hands, Knutsford, GB (World Record)19939 buses, no hands, China (World Record)Eddie concludes: ' Done over 3,000 jumps and never crashed, it's been a lucky bike.'Our late vendor purchased Eddie's Yamaha at a UK auction sale in London in December 1993 (invoice on file). Following a period of inactivity, this motorcycle will require recommissioning or possibly more extensive restoration before further use and thus is sold strictly as viewed (the engine turns). Key not required.Footnotes:All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding. Please see the Auction Information and Guide for Buyers at the top of the main sale page, for bidders' obligations.
