DIDEROT DENIS: (1713-1784) French Philosopher, art Critic and Writer, a significant figure during the Age of Enlightenment. Very rare A.L.S., `Diderot´, one page, 4to, Paris, 21st September 1779, to `Monsieur l´abbé Galliani, in Naples´ addressed in Diderot´s hand, in French. Je vous supplie de lui rendre tous les bons offices que vos protégés obtiendront de moi.´ (Translation: "Sir, and very kind abbot, Mr. de Meunier, who will present this letter to you, is here, standing next to my table, wearing boots, whip in hand, ready to go, and fully resolved to leave only with a word from me recommending him to you. Mr. de Meunier is a man of letters, a man of wit, an honest man. He is the friend of your friends. He travels by curiosity. I beg you to return to him all the good offices that your protégés will obtain from me.") Further, Diderot refers to the figure and trace left by his correspondent, stating `Vous ne pensez pas quelquefois à des hommes qui ne vous oublieront jamais, parce que personne ne remplira jamais le vide que vous avez laissé dans leur société!´ (Translation: "You don't sometimes think of men who will never forget you, because no one will ever fill the void you left in their society!") Before concluding Diderot sends a funny farewell comment, saying `Vous êtes le plus ingrât de la race humaine´ ("You are the most ungrateful of the human race.") With address leaf in Diderot´s hand, bearing an attractive small red wax seal in fine condition. Corner clipped to the adress leaf and very small creasing, otherwise G to VG

Circa 1900-1600 B.C. Accompanied by a copy of an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993, which states: 'Two standing gods face a complex scene. The first deity is a Lamma goddess, in horned tiara, long flounced robe, and she is raising both hands. Behind her stands the god with mace: hat with deep brim, clothes to the knees, and holding his mace at the waist. What they are witnessing is a standing monster: general build of a lion, but wings, a brush tail and talons of a bird of prey for legs. Its head is leaning down. Above it stands a god in long robe and long tiara, with one leg projecting and foot resting on some strange being. The god holds a whip over one shoulder and forked lightning in the other hand. Facing him in the distance is a small walking figure holding up some object. A two-line cuneiform inscription names two gods: Adad and Shala. This is an Old Babylonian seal, c. 1900-1600 B.C. It is somewhat worn, but the design is rare for the animal and god above it. This god is Adad, the storm god, identified by whip, forked lightning, and the animal on which he stands, which was passed down to the Old Babylonian period from the Akkad period. Thus the design is of considerable interest. Shala was the wife of Adad.'; supplied with a museum-quality impression. 15.9 grams, 30 mm (1 1/4 in.). From the private collection of a North American lady, formed 1970s-early 1990s, with collection reference no.P105.
