20th century Chinese hardwood side chair with curved backsplat. Square-shaped legs joined by stretchers. Parts possibly zitan.Height: 40 in x width: 21 in x depth: 17 in.Condition: The chair is structurally sound and stable. There is some light separation to the joints throughout. Along the left post of the back, there is a split to the wood. A few small cracks to the wood throughout. Some wear to the underside of the feet. Light wear to the feet.
A Chinese Imperial hardstone inlaid zitan and huanghuali 'Longevity' table screen, Qing Dynasty, the silk screen depicting birds flying amidst peony blossoms and foliage, the inlaid borders made of white jade, lapis lazuli, soapstone, amber, turquoise, and quartz on the huanghuali back panel, on top of the screen inlaid in white jade with wan shou wu jiang characters, all set in a zitan frame carved with key-fret symbols, carved zitan stand, approximately 82cm high x 72cm wide Provenance: Gifted by repute from Empress Cixi to Anne Evelind Barnes (1894-1997), wife of Ernest Talbot Barnes (circa 1890-1984), an employee of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank in the 1920's, then Martyn Harry St Clair Barnes (1924-1998) and by family descent This striking screen has been executed with meticulous detail and great skill in trompe l'oeil inlaid onto a flat surface. The production of screens of this type required the cooperation of various Palace workshops, where skilled craftsmen paid particular attention to recreating elements of the design in their specialised medium. The table screen is believed to have been displayed on the Qingyan Boat in the Summer Palace and was then, by repute, gifted by Empress Cixi to Anne Evelind Barnes (née Knox) (1894-1997) for her endeavours in helping to set up the soup kitchens in Tianjin. China. 钱汝诚/Qiang Ru Chen/Qian Rucheng, 清錢汝誠臨宋四家書/Qing Qian Ru Cheng, Lin Song Si Jia Shu/Qian Rucheng Lin Song Sijia shu; [The compilations of the calligraphic writings of The Four Great Calligraphers of the Song Dynasty, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, Mi Fu & Cai Xiang], Qing dynasty, [16]ff of manuscript calligraphy, signed with two red seals of the scholar-calligrapher, further inscribed, the paper leaves with ink-ruled borders, now split into three parts, contemporary Chinese hardwood covers, presumably zitan, the upper-cover carved in relief with vertical lettering, the lower-cover plain, yellow and gold splash endpapers, the upper-cover with a late 19th c manuscript label, inscribed in English and indistinctly monogrammed, rather worn and inscribed: ' *** the Library of [crossed out] in the S*** [Summer Palace?/Yuanmingyuan?] of the Emperor **** 1860 by *** ', 13 x 9.3cm (closed) The Shiqu baoji documents 24 works by Qian Rucheng, excluding this particular work. Qian's own as well as his collaborative works were stored across the imperial residences in Beijing, including within the different palaces and halls of the Summer Palace complex. In the opinion of Shichun Lei of Northumbria University, 'Based on the mount of the work, it is certainly an imperial work, but to tell its original location is difficult; if the attached old label tells [us] it was taken from the Summer Palace, I guess this calligraphy work once had been stored in the Summer Palace.' Provenance: 1) The Imperial Collection, Beijing; 2) the O'Reilly family of Knock Abbey, Co. Louth, Ireland, and thence by descent to the present vendor. A member of the aforementioned family, Lt.-Col. Charles Myles O'Reilly (1869-1942), is noted as having served with International Forces in China, 1900. It's probable that he collected the book during his overseas service. However, the manuscript label's monogram, though indistinct, does not seem to include the letters of the O'Reilly family's surname. Therefore, it's entirely plausible that between leaving the Imperial Collection and the Irish country house's library, the manuscript book passed through another's hands. Mellors & Kirk would like to thank Professor Louise Tythacott of SOAS and Shichun Lei of Northumbria University for their help and expertise in the cataloguing of this lot. Complete. The paper leaves with discernible signs of handling, with some soiling in places but never affecting the legibility of the text. The text now split into three portions, as catalogued, one leaf bearing a small late 19th/early 20th c English printed scrap, presumably from an ad hoc repair contemporary to the scrap. The MS label of the upper-cover worn and now indistinctly legible. The hardwood covers with some surface wear and light scratching, but no splits or repairs.

An important pair of Chinese carved zitan and silver wire inlaid ‘cloud and dragon’ curio cabinets and stands, duobaoge, probably Imperial, late Qing dynasty, the top, front and side panels of each cabinet carved in high relief with dragons chasing 'flaming pearls' amongst clouds, within borders inlaid in fine silver wire with lotus flowers, foliate scrolls and keywork, the stepped upper section fitted with two drawers above a pair of panelled doors, the gilt bronze lock plate and hinges engraved with dragons, enclosing a plain interior, above a third long drawer, each on an openwork stand with matching fine silver wire inlay, the frieze carved with bats amid clouds the downswept apron elaborately carved and pierced with dragons chasing a flaming pearl with flared feet, 60cm high, 38cm wide, minor old chip lossesIt is likely that this pair of cabinets were made for Imperial use as zitan (red sandalwood) was the favoured timber of the craftsmen in the Imperial workshops in which similar ‘dragon’ cabinets were made in the 18th and 19th century. A VERY RARE SMALL INSCRIBED ZITAN BRUSHPOT, BITONGSigned Xu Fang and Li Tianzhi, cyclically dated to the Wuxu year corresponding to 1658 and of the periodThe tall cylindrical vessel of dark-brown tone incised around the exterior with a portrait of a gentleman and calligraphic inscriptions in clerical script. 10.5cm (4 1/8in) high.Footnotes:戊戌年(1658) 紫檀雕詩文筆筒「徐枋」「龍湫山人」款Provenance: a Danish private collection來源: 丹麥私人收藏The inscription above the portrait of the gentleman in seal script reads: 蜃園肖景(影) which may be translated as 'The portrait of Shenyuan', with the seal and signature of Xu Fang 徐枋(1622-1694).The main inscription in clerical script reads: 野態何煩彩莙痕,為留模樣與兒孫。心中應有難言意,不共攜家住鹿門。俟齊園後余自題,崆峒為刊於此。Which may be translated as: Retreating to wilderness (I) should not feel discomfort about consuming wild vegetation, as it serves as a model for the sons and grandsons. Grappling with sentiments that resist easy expression, (I) could not take my family to live in seclusion. After waiting for the completion of Qi Garden, I inscribed this myself. Kongtong carved this here (for me).The signature reads 'Longqiu shanren' 龍湫山人 (The Mountain Man of Longqiu) which is the self-proclaimed title of Li Tianzhi 李天植(1591-1672) who is also known as 'Shenyuan xiansheng' 蜃園先生 (The Gentleman of Shenyuan). Li Tianzhi passed the Imperial examination in the sixth year of the Chongzhen period (1633), gaining the rank of 'juren', but he was carefree by nature and had no intention of pursuing an official career. After the fall of the Ming dynasty, he retired to Chen Mountain and lived in seclusion. He established a school in a temple and made a living by teaching. After residing there for ten years, he found the school affairs too bothersome, so he retreated to his family's estate, Shenyuan, and earned a living by selling his writings and woven baskets. Despite his financial difficulties, when the villagers tried to support him with provisions, he declined their help. Local officials, hearing of his reputation, visited him, but he evaded them by climbing over the wall.
