SPILBERGEN (JORIS VAN) 'T Historiael Journael, van tghene ghepasseert is van weghen drie schepen, ghenaemt den Ram, Schaep ende het Lam...', engraved title, engraved folding map of Ceylon, 9 (of 11) engravings, title and first plate laid down, toning and some light soiling, edges a little frayed, modern black cloth with gilt lettering ('Official Journal') on upper cover [not in Sabin], oblong 4to (190 x 225mm.), Amsterdam, Michiel Colijn, 1617 Footnotes: RARE, only one copy traced at auction. Joris Van Spilbergen (1568-1620), a German in the service of the Dutch East India Company, voyaged through the Magellan Straits and around the world between 1614 and 1617, with a flotilla of six ships. It was 'the most successful Dutch circumnavigation to date. The fleet had kept together, there had been little loss of Dutch life, and the expedition had netted a considerable profit for its sponsors' (Howgego). The full-page plates comprise: the town of Veere, map of Ceylon [Sri Lanka], map of the region around the Cape of Good Hope, the French fleet at Annobon, Van Spilbergen's audience with the king of Batticalao, the city of Bintenne, the fleet of Van Spilbergen at Batticaloa, Van Spilbergen and the English capturing a Portuguese carrack. The smaller engraved illustrations depict: god worship at Batticalao, and the seal and coat of arms of the king of Kandy. From 28 June 2025, the import into the EU of non-EU property of a certain age (and in some categories above a certain value) is subject to additional requirements. The refusal of any required Import Licence or Importer Statement, or any delay in obtaining such Licence or Statement shall not give rise to the rescission or cancellation of any Sale, nor allow any delay in making full payment for the Lot.
Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
VAT at the current rate of 20% will be added to the Buyer's Premium and charges excluding Artists Resale Right.
