Hippolyte-Dominique Berteaux (Saint-Quentin 1843-1928 Paris) La consolation signé et daté 'HBe***/ 18**' (partiellement illisible et renforcé) huile sur panneau indistinctly signed and dated 'HBe***/ 18**' (strengthened) oil on panel 60 x 80 cm (23 5/8 x 31 1/2in). Footnotes: Provenance Private Collection, France A pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904), Hippolyte-Dominique Berteaux was known for his genre scenes, portraits, and decorative commissions. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1866 and received several honours during his career. The present painting is a typical example of his work, marked by precise drawing, clear composition, and careful attention to costume and setting, in line with the academic tradition of the period. Works by Berteaux are held in several French public collections, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and the Musée Antoine Lécuyer in Saint-Quentin.
