Victor Gabriel Gilbert (Paris 1847-1935) Jour du marché signé et daté 'Victor Gilbert /1881' (en bas à droite) huile sur toile signed and dated 'Victor Gilbert /1881' (lower right) oil on canvas 65.5 x 81.5cm (25 13/16 x 32 1/16in). Footnotes: Provenance Sale, Hôtel de Ventes de Monte-Carlo, Monaco, 30 April 2016, lot 35 Victor Gabriel Gilbert is renowned for his depictions of Parisian market scenes, a genre that became a hallmark of his career, gaining prominence in the 1880s. In the present painting, the artist captures the vibrancy of urban commerce, portraying market vendors and bourgeois figures with realism and social nuance. Exhibited regularly at the Salon and honoured with the Légion d'Honneur, Gilbert's work stands as a sophisticated commentary on the social and cultural rhythms of Paris during the Belle Époque. Another version of the present painting was offered at Christie's New York, 26 January 2011, lot 212. We are grateful to Noé Willer and Emilie Charmetant for confirming the attribution to Victor Gilbert. A written certificate can be issued, at the cost of the buyer.
