Guram Nemsadze (Georgian, 1943-2014) The Parable signed (lower left) and dated '1986' (lower right); further signed, titled and dated (verso) oil on canvas 65 x 65cm (25 9/16 x 25 9/16in). Footnotes: Literature Exhibition catalogue, Georgische Kunstler, 28.5 0 18.6, Berlin, 1989, p. 6 illustrated. Born in 1943, Guram's artistic journey began formally at Tbilisi State Academy of Arts, where he graduated in 1976, though his creative spirit had undoubtedly been shaped by the mystical landscapes and stories of his homeland long before. As a member of the Artists' Union since 1988, Nemsadze created works that transcended conventional boundaries. His canvases never simply depicted the visible world but rather served as portals to realms of memory, myth, and spiritual contemplation. In his paintings, one finds no literal landscapes or portraits but dreamlike visions where colour and form create a language of their own. Nemsadze's artistic vision was deeply rooted in Georgia's ancient heritage, Colchis and Diauehi, the Tubals and Chalybes. However, his work reached far beyond national borders. His exhibitions across North America and Europe, particularly The Return of Medea in Germany, revealed how his bold reinvention of artistic conventions could bridge diverse cultures and histories. Beyond painting, Nemsadze expressed his creative versatility through sculpture, with works like Taboo earning international recognition. His literary talents manifested in poetry, both original and translated. Until his death in 2014, Nemsadze continued creating worlds where pre-Christian and Christian symbolism intertwined, where archaic forms found new life, and where viewers could discover unexpected connections between past and present. His legacy lives on in museums and private collections worldwide, a testament to an artist who forged a narrow path through a complex world with colour, movement, and visionary insight. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
