CAMERON (JULIA MARGARET) Sir Edward Ryan, albumen half-length portrait, inscribed 'From Life. Registered photograph Copyright Julia Margaret Cameron. Freshwater Sept. 1871' by Cameron beneath image on the mount, with Colnaghi stamp, a few spots and minor abrasions to image, pencil note identifying sitter on the mount [Cox and Ford 732, wrongly identified as 'Lord Overstone(?)], image cut to an oval (345 x 260mm.), sheet 585 x 465mm., 1871; with 2 duplicates of the same albumen print by Cameron, both inscribed 'From Life. Registered photograph Copyright Julia Margaret Cameron' (one with 'Freshwater' too) by Cameron on the mount beneath the image; one arch-topped (some spotting and fading) additionally inscribed by Cameron 'For Charles Ryan [the sitter's son] from his beloved father's friend & his own friend Julia Margaret Cameron' on the mount, c.360 x 255mm.; one oblong format (uneven fading and spotting, the face worked on with whitening to enhance the hair, nose and fore-head), additionally inscribed by Cameron 'To our friend of 35 faithful years from Julia Margaret Cameron with our love, Sept. 1871' on card note window-mounted beneath the image, 1871 (3) Footnotes: Sir Edward Ryan (1793-1875) was a judge in India, and Chief Justice of Bengal from 1833–43. Like Julia's husband, Charles Hay Cameron, Ryan's career was spent in a variety of Colonial postings, and he maintained a close friendship with the couple for nearly forty years. In the 1850s Ryan and Cameron campaigned together to open the Indian Civil Service to the native population. Fine association copies, the three images also convey the different formats that Cameron would use for her portrait photographs; arch-tipped, oval or square/rectangle. Provenance: Sir Edward Ryan (1793-1875), the sitter; Sir Charles Lister Ryan, his son; Madeline Elliot, née Ryan (1863-1906), the sitter's grand-daughter; by descent to the current owner. Buyers' Premium and Charges
For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:
Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.
A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
