CAMERON (JULIA MARGARET) Charles Hay Cameron, albumen print, inscribed 'From Life Registered Photograph copyright Julia Margaret Cameron Freshwater Aug. 1871' by Cameron, and additionally signed ('C.H. Cameron') by the sitter beneath the image, mounted on card with Colnaghi stamp, spotting on image, one corner of mount cut away [Cox and Ford 599], image 305 x 250mm., mount 425 x 570mm., August 1871 Footnotes: Charles Hay Cameron (1795-1880) met and married his wife Julia Margaret at Calcutta in 1838, and on his retirement to England was an avid supporter of her photographic career. 'He affected long hair and a long beard—Tennyson called it a 'beard dipt in moonlight'' (ODNB), and posed for his wife on a number of occasions between 1864 and 1871. Our image is dated by Julia as August 1871, not September as mentioned by Fox and Ford. Provenance: Sir Edward Ryan (1793-1875), judge in India, and Chief Justice of Bengal from 1833–43. He was a long-time friend and associate of Hay Cameron, the two men campaigning together in the 1850s to open the Indian Civil Service to the native population; Sir Charles Lister Ryan, his son; Madeleine Elliot, nee Ryan (1863-1906), the sitter; by descent to the current owner. Buyers' Premium and Charges


For all Sales categories, buyer's premium excluding Cars, Motorbikes, Wine, Whisky and Coin & Medal sales, will be as follows:

Buyer's Premium Rates
28% on the first £40,000 of the hammer price;
27% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £40,000 up to and including £800,000;
21% of the hammer price of amounts in excess of £800,000 up to and including £4,500,000;
and 14.5% of the hammer price of any amounts in excess of £4,500,000.

A 3rd party bidding platform fee of 4% of the Hammer Price for Buyers using the following bidding platforms will be added to the invoices of successful Buyers for auctions starting on or after 6th July 2024 – Invaluable; Live Auctioneers; The Saleroom; Lot-tissimo.
