CAMERON (JULIA MARGARET) Colonel Franklin RA CB, albumen print, inscribed 'From Life Registered Photograph, Freshwater Bay, December 1868 Copyright Julia Margaret Cameron' by Cameron beneath image on the original mount, a few spots and blemishes in the negative, mount toned [not in Cox and Ford], image 305 x 248mm., mount 460 x 362mm., 1868 Footnotes: A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED PORTRAIT BY JULIA MARGARET CAMERON. In Complete Photographs (2003) Cox and Ford record one undated image of 'Colonel Franklin' [no.668], posed with his medals prominently displayed on his Royal Artillery uniform. Our image, dated by Cameron as taken in 1868, shows Franklin posed more informally, pensively leaning on his hand but in the same uniform. Charles Trigance Franklin (1822-1895), Colonel in the Royal Artillery lived (whilst not serving in India) on the Isle of Wight, and was evidently known to both Julia Margaret Cameron and Lord Alfred Tennyson. Tennyson's son recorded in his memoirs that when, in 1864, Garibaldi had visited his father at his home at Farringford, I.O.W. 'It was pleasant to see how his face lighted up when he recognized his old acquaintance Mrs Franklin (wife of Colonel Franklin stationed here): and he greeted the Colonel warmly too. Mrs Cameron wanted to photograph Garibaldi, and dropped down on her knees before him, and held up her black hands, covered with chemicals. He evidently thought that she was a beggar until we had explained who she was.'
