CAMERON (JULIA MARGARET) A woman and child [Madeleine Ryan], albumen print, signed and inscribed 'From Life. Julia Margaret Cameron' by Cameron beneath the image, mounted on card with Colnaghi stamp, some light spots and abrasions, spotting to mount [not in Ford and Cox], image 358 x 280mm., 582 x 465mm., [?1868] Footnotes: A PREVIOUSLY UNRECORDED PHOTOGRAPH depicting a woman and young girl posed in the style similar to Cameron's various images of the 'Madonna and child'. A pencil note on mount records 'The child is Madeleine Ryan, mother of Hubert Elliott'. Madeleine (1863-1906) was the daughter of Charles Lister Ryan and Jane Georgiana Ryan (née Shaw Lefevre), who were closely connected to Julia Margaret Cameron. Their London address was Addison Road, Kensington, where Julia's nephew Valentine Cameron Prinsep was a neighbour, and near where her sister Sara Prinsep held salons at Little Holland House to which Julia, Tennyson, G.F. Watts and other important artistic figures were regular attendees. Charles' father Sir Edward Ryan, who had served as a Judge in India, was a friend and associate of Julia's husband Charles Hay Cameron, and also sat for a portrait by Cameron (see lot 78) in 1871. In their Complete Photographs (2003) Cox and Ford record no images of Madeleine, or her mother. However the female figure in our image is undoubtedly the sitter of a 'Madonna' subject taken by Cameron in 1868 [Cox and Ford 103, with same distinctive mole on her cheek and dimple]. Cox and Ford posit the idea that the sitter is Cameron's eldest daughter Julia Norman, but it seems probable that it is actually Madeleine's mother Jane Georgiana. In 1868 Madeleine would have been aged four or five. In 1888 she married the politician Arthur Elliot (1846-1923), with whom she had two sons (including Hubert). It is poignant that after Madeleine's death in 1906 Arthur spent the rest of his life at Freshwater, Isle of Wight close-by to Julia Margaret Cameron's old home Dimbola Lodge. Provenance: Madeleine Elliot, née Ryan (1863-1906), the sitter; by descent to the current owner.
