A superb 40% (2:5) scale model 9 cylinder Gnome Monosoupape rotary aero engine by J G Winrow Model Engineer, 2005, finely detailed and hand-built from scratch, complete with a hand-made laminated propeller, fitted with proprietary miniature spark-plugs, the unit mounted on custom-built green painted display stand above a wooden base. Sold together with an album of photographs showing each stage of the machining and construction. This fine model won the prestigious 'Warco' Trophy at the National Model Engineers Exhibition in 2005 achieving 1st prize, sold with the presentation certificate, framed and glazed. (3) Footnotes: This is a (40% Scale) Gnome Monosoupape Aircraft engine built to the highest exhibition standards in meticulous detail by the late 'James Graham Winrow.' Apart from the sparkplugs, every single part has been hand-built from scratch. The Monosoupape (French for single-valve), was a rotary engine design first introduced in 1913 by Gnome Engine Company (renamed Gnome et Rhône in 1915). It used an arrangement of internal transfer ports and a single pushrod-operated exhaust valve to replace the many moving parts found on more conventional rotary engines, and made the Monosoupape engines some of the most reliable of the era. British aircraft designer Thomas Sopwith described the Monosoupape as 'one of the greatest single advances in aviation'. Monosoupape engines were produced under license in large numbers in Britain, Russia, Italy and the US. Two differing nine-cylinder versions were produced, the 100Hp 9B-2 and 160Hp 9N, giving the larger displacement 9N version a nearly-cylindrical shaped crankcase and a dual ignition system for increased flight safety.
