British War and Victory Medals (15200 Pte. W. A. Hamm [sic]. Berks. Yeo.); Defence Medal; Coronation 1953, unnamed as issued; Police L.S. & G.C., G.VI.R. (Ch. Inspr. William A. Ham) mounted as originally worn, very fine (5) £200-£240
---
William Arthur Ham was born in Mortimer, Berkshire in February 1899. He initially served during the Great War with the Berkshire Yeomanry, and transferred to the 1/1st Dorset Yeomanry in August 1918. Ham was disembodied in March 1919, and joined the Metropolitan Police in December 1925. He advanced to Sergeant in the Mounted Branch in January 1936, and promoted to Inspector in December the following year. Ham was serving as a Superintendent in 1952, and according to family tradition he taught Queen Elizabeth II how to ride side-saddle. There is nothing to substantiate this at present, but a picture of him was published in the Daily Mirror 6 May 1952, with the caption:
‘One of London’s most popular spectacles was again seen today when the guard mounting parade for Buckingham Palace and St. James’s was held on Horse Guards Parade. Superintendent Ham of the Mounted Police, is seen riding “Winston”, the horse the Queen will probably ride at the Trooping the Colour ceremony, leading the parade as the Guards march off Horse Guards Parade.’ (A poor quality photocopy of this image is included with the lot).
In later life Superintendent Ham resided at Walnut Cottage, Station Road, Hockwold, Norfolk, and died in North Walsham, Norfolk in May 1995.
Sold with copied research.
