Sunil Madhav Sen (1910 - 1979)

Mixed Media on Board

24.5 x 19 Inches

This painting blends Sunil Madhav Sen’s interest in folk myth and modernist structure. The central figure, with its multiple head-like shapes and eye motifs, subtly hints at the legendary Ravana of the Ramayana, the ten-headed king whose image Sen would have known well from village performances and clay masks seen in his Bankura childhood.

Yet this is not a literal telling: the layered forms, wheels, and angular lines transform the myth into an abstract, almost cosmic field. Such works show how Sen absorbed the dramatic energy of Bengal’s folk traditions and reimagined them through the lens of European Cubism and his instinctive style.
