Sunil Madhav Sen (1910 - 1979)
Watercolour on Paper
18.5 x 17 Inches
In this composition, Sunil Madhav Sen reduces the figure to its elemental parts. Rooted in his memories of the earthy village life of Rarh, Bengal and inspired by folk sculpture and clay idols, Sen’s nude studies often blur the line between the sensual and the symbolic. The free brushwork echoes his absorption of European modernism, from Picasso’s fractured female forms to post-war expressionist mark-making, and yet remain unmistakably his own.
