Title: The Reclining Rower Medium: Mixed Media on Paper Signature: Signed Lower Centre Provenance: Private Collection Note: This is Part of a Series of Works on Rowing by Harper Framed Lot Description: Charles Harper RHA (b.1943), The Reclining Rower, mixed media on paper, signed. A powerful and expressive figurative study depicting a male rower at rest, captured in a moment of physical surrender or reflection. Executed in layered washes of earthy red and brown tones, Harper’s gestural marks and angular linework suggest tension, fatigue and vulnerability. The piece combines abstraction and figuration with emotional immediacy, characteristic of Harper’s acclaimed explorations of the human form. Framed in a white mount with slim gilt frame. Image: 56 x 80.5 cm. Framed: 76 x 100 cm. PICTURES AND PRINTS Tuesday 16th September 2025 18:03:20 Biography CHARLES HARPER RHA (B. 1943) Born on Valencia Island, County Kerry, Charles Harper studied at the Limerick School of Art and the National College of Art in Dublin, later pursuing filmmaking studies in Bonn, Germany. He has exhibited widely both in Ireland and internationally, representing Ireland in countries including India, Switzerland, Italy, Latvia, England, France, the United States, and Sweden. Harper has been the recipient of eight national awards for his painting. Highlights include First Prize for Painting commemorating the 1916 Rising at Dublin’s Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, the Carrolls Open Award at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in 1971, and the Arts Council’s Bonn an Uachtarain de Hide at The Oireachtas Art Exhibition. His work is held in numerous important public and private collections, including the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Harper served as a lecturer at Limerick School of Art and Design (now LIT) and is now retired. He is a founding member of Aosdána and has been a member of the Royal Hibernian Academy since 2002.
