Title: The Goose Girl Medium: Oil on Canvas Signature: Signed Lower Right Provenance: Denis Drum Auctions, Malahide; Private Collection, Dublin; Private Collection Framed George Bernard O’Neill (1828–1917), oil on canvas, depicting a tranquil rural courtyard scene with a woman guiding a group of geese past stone cottages, with further figures visible in the background. The composition is bathed in soft natural light and rendered with the artist’s typical warmth and narrative charm. Presented in an ornate gilt frame. Image: 49.5 x 39.5 cm. PICTURES AND PRINTS Tuesday 16th September 2025 20:28:20 Biography GEORGE BERNARD O'NEILL (1828 - 1917) Born in Dublin, George Bernard O’Neill trained at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he began exhibiting at the age of 19. Renowned for his genre scenes and portraits, he gained early acclaim with works such as The Foundling (1852). O’Neill was a member of the Cranbrook Colony, painting English rural life and often using his Cranbrook home as a setting. He also maintained a London studio, where he painted portraits and engaged with the metropolitan art scene, including friendships with artists such as James McNeill Whistler. O’Neill’s works were celebrated for their combination of sentiment, social commentary, and careful observation. He continued working privately after 1893 and died in London in 1917.
