Signed 'Rossetti' and initialled 'GR' Titled 'The Heir of Linne' in Mrs Gabriele Rossetti's hand (according to V. Surtees), lower right. Inscribed verso 'G.D. Rossetti to Rosa de Mortara, Marquise de Rochegude, when she was ten years old. 1840' in the same hand.
Provenance: A gift from the artist to Rosa de Mortara, Marquise de Rochegude; By descent to her daughter Baroness Catherine d'Erlanger of 139 Piccadilly; Possibly Sotheby's, 1937, lot 121; Purchased from Sotheby's by Janet Camp Troxell; Sotheby's, 26 September 1990, lot 356/2; Private collection, UK
