Signed 'Rossetti' lower right Inscribed 'G. Dante Rossetti to Rose de Mortara, Marquise de Rochegude, 1840' verso in Mrs Gabriele Rossetti's hand (according to V. Surtees)
This sketch is described by Surtees as relating to a watercolour by Rossetti entitled 'A Fight for a Woman' (Detroit Institute of Arts no. 26-79).
Provenance: A gift from the artist to Rosa de Mortara, Marquise de Rochegude; By descent to her daughter Baroness Catherine d'Erlanger of 139 Piccadilly; Sotheby's, 1937, lot 122; Purchased from Sotheby's by Janet Camp Troxell; Sotheby's, 26 September 1990, lot 356/2; Private collection, UK
